This quiet village has seen its story change in the morning
of June, 6th 1944 when 82nd Airborne paratroopers liberated the
village.
The dummy paratrooper hanging on the steeple of the church,
representing John Steele, the Borne 0 of the Way of Liberty, Airborne
Museum, two modern stained-glass windows in Holly Mother of
Peace-church or Paratrooper’s Memorial at la Fière are tributes to
this event.
In 1962, movie “The longest Day“ released in theaters enhanced
Sainte-Mère-Église fame.

marina has kept a rich heritage
in testimony of the past

In 1944, Carentan, strategic area
in Baie des Veys, had to be
quickly liberated by American

Let’s discover this unique
site, listed Historic
Monument. During the First
World War, French National
Marine built this Hangar
in order to shelter dirigible
airships which were in
charge of fighting German
submarines. This building was used at that time to house some artillery
batteries until 1939. In June 1944, after the fights of the 4th/DIV, Americans
set their workshop for vehicles and weapons. Many German prisoners were
hired there. That is why the graffiti are in two languages. The visit takes
place in three parts: first the museum with archives, scale models, videos
and then the battlefield of the Montebourg battle and finally discover the
Hangar through its graffiti and its unique construction in the world.
