Module I:
Laboratory Apparatus/Equipment
and Uses
Week 5
Welcome to the STE Electives-Biotechnology Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) my dear learner!
This module will serve as your guide in mastering the most essential learning competencies and
be technologically, environmentally, and scientifically literate. The activities prepared will give you
opportunity for independent practice and learning. Furthermore, you will enjoy the fun in
performing the tasks included in this self-learning kit.
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the module. Use
a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities included in
the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult
your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning and gain deep
understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
The laboratory equipment is a technical field, which offer opportunity in learning science
through hands-on experience. Only with the help of laboratory equipment, experiments,
process controls and quality assurance are made possible. Electronic measuring
instruments or vacuum apparatuses are the most important working materials in the
field of laboratory equipment. Without the help of these important devices, the scientific
field of laboratory equipment could not exist.
In this module, you will be able to familiarized and understand the uses of Laboratory
apparatus and equipment used in Biotechnology and the proper way of proper handling
some laboratory apparatus and equipment.
What I Know
Read each sentences carefully. Write the letter of the correct answer on your answer
sheet.

c. Leave it and tell your teacher after the lab work completed.
d. Alert your lab partners and other groups near you and tell your teacher.
9. Approved eye protection devices such as goggles are always worn inside the
laboratory to_________.
a. Improve our vision
b. avoids eye strain
c. Protect ourselves from heat and chemicals
d. serves as the design and props inside the lab
10. Laboratory activity should start immediately upon entering the laboratory to end the
activity on time even if the teacher is not yet around.
a. True
b. False
Brewing and baking bread are examples of processes that fall within the concept of
biotechnology to produce the desired product. Such traditional processes usually utilize
the organisms in their natural form (or further developed by breeding), while the more
modern form of biotechnology will generally involve a more advanced modification of the
biological system or organism.
This will not be possible without the help of laboratory apparatus or equipment to ensure
the quality of the product.

What Is It
Laboratory equipment and apparatus are very important in the field of biotechnology.
It assures that the product produce is with high quality.
If you work in a laboratory setting, you undoubtedly encounter many kinds of expensive
and complicated instruments and machines. Knowing how to use these tools can only
benefit you. This is especially true if you are expected to use them while pursuing your
area of research and testing. Not knowing what you are doing can set you back in a
variety of ways. There are different apparatus and equipment used in biotechnology. Here
