PART B: Solve the following

1. The Jones family is going to London on the train. The cost of an adult train ticket is a, and the
cost of a child train ticket is c.
Write an algebraic expression for the cost of the train journey for the Jones family if there are 2 adults
and 3 children in the family.

2. The Jones family spends t hours on the train to London and 10 more minutes on the train
back home than on the train to London. Write an algebraic expression for the time the Jones family
spends on the trains on both journeys.

3. The journey from the train station to the Natural History Museum takes the Jones family 8
times less than the journey on the train to London. Write an algebraic expression for the time the
Jones family spends on the journey from the train station to the Natural History Museum.

4. The Jones children decide to buy Christmas gifts for their friends in the museum’s gift shop.
• Brandon buys 2 gifts, the cost of each gift is f.
• Daniel buys d gifts, the cost of each gift is p.
• Georgia buys 2 more gifts than Daniel, the cost of each gift is z.
Write an algebraic expression for how much money should Mr Jones pay at the gift shop till if he also
decides to buy gifts for his children and the cost of each gift is f.

5. Mrs Jones decides to buy Christmas presents for her nieces and nephews in the museum.
She buys:
• k sets of dinosaurs, 7 dinosaurs in each set.
• s sets of sharks, 5 sharks in each set.
• v sets of wild animals, y animals in each set.
Write an algebraic expression for the number of toy animals Mr Jones carries in his backpack on the
way to the London train station.

6. Mrs Jones made a painting showing her family near the Tower Bridge. The length of the

of the painting.
