Production planning and control in small engineer-to-order companies: Understanding

difficulties and pragmatic approach – The new model for manufacturing systems, even for
mass production industry, is demanding more flexibility and agility in manufacturing
installations.
In this context, tooling companies produce customized hardware in Engineer-to-Order (ETO)
environment, for these mass production companies.
Globalization and advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) are
changing the business and manufacturing processes.
Expected contribution is to give an insight of how tooling companies are dealing with PPC,
providing deeper understanding about the needs and difficulties in adapting the lighter ERP
systems for PPC in typical ETO/SME companies.
This research aims to understand how tooling companies are dealing pragmatically with
their Production Planning and Control (PPC) and understand their difficulties about the use
of ERP systems for production planning.
While most of mass production companies have improved their efficiency to handle these
market demands through ERP systems, tooling companies, characterized by the diversity of
products and their small size, seem to find difficulties in adopting these systems, in particular
to integrate the planning and control of the shop floor.
2. STRATEGIES OF PRODUCTION CONTROL AS TOOLS OF EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT OF
PRODUCTION ENTERPRISES - The paper discusses the problem of principle methods of
production control as a strategy supporting the production system and stimulating efficient
solutions in respect management in production enterprises.
The article describes MRP, ERP, JIT, KANBAN and TOC methods and focuses on their main
goals, principles of functioning as well as benefits re-sulting from their application.
The methods represent two diverse strategies of production control, i.e.pull and push
strategies.
Push strategies are used when the plans apply to the first and principle part of production
and are based on the demand forecasts.
Pull strategies are used when all planning decisions apply to the final stage and depend on
the actual demand or orders from customers.

Evaluating an Agile Method for Planning and Controlling Innovative Projects

This article presents an extensive investigation carried out in two technology-based companies of
the São Carlos technological pole in Brazil. Based on this multiple case study and literature review, a
method, entitled hereafter IVPM2, applying agile project management (APM) principles was
developed. After the method implementation, a qualitative evaluation was carried out by a
document analysis and questionnaire application. This article shows that the application of this
method at the companies under investigation evidenced the benefits of using simple, iterative,
visual, and agile techniques to plan and control innovative product projects combined with
traditional project management best practices, such as standardization.
