DEMONSTRATE THE DIFFERENT WAY OF IMPORTING GPS

DATA AND GIS DATA FROM OTHER MAPPING SOURCES IN
QGIS

2.1: WHAT IS GPS?

GPS, the Global Positioning System, is a satellite-based system that allows anyone with a GPS receiver to
find their exact position anywhere in the world. GPS is used as an aid in navigation, for example in
airplanes, in boats and by hikers. The GPS receiver uses the signals from the satellites to calculate its
latitude, longitude and (sometimes) elevation. Most receivers also have the capability to store locations
(known as waypoints), sequences of locations that make up a planned route and a tracklog or track of
the receiver’s movement over time. Waypoints, routes and tracks are the three basic feature types in GPS
data. QGIS displays waypoints in point layers, while routes and tracks are displayed in line string layers.

2.2:ADDING PLUGINS TO QGIS:

STEP 1: plugins > Manage and install plugins > search for quickmap services (plugins)
STEP 2: Install plugins
STEP 3: after installing click on Web tool bar > Quickmapservices > OSM > OSM Standard, the open
street map is ready to use

2.3: LOADING GPS DATA FROM A FILE:

The format that QGIS uses is called GPX (GPS eXchange format), which is a standard interchange format
that can contain any number of waypoints, routes, and tracks in the same file.
To load a GPX file, we first need to load the plugin.
 Plugins ‣ Plugin Manager opens the Plugin Manager Dialog.
 Activate the GPS Tools checkbox.
How to add GPS datas in QGIS
Select layer > create layer >create new GPS layer > Select files(gpx.) > Open > Add
2.4: HOW TO IMPORT KML FILE IN QGIS:
STEP 1 : Open Google earth pro > digitise the area into polygon which we need > Then save place as > save the file
name as .kmz file > files are stored.

STEP 2: OPEN QGIS > Click on Layer tab > Add layer > add vector layer ( ctrl+shift+v) > Search the file
(Coimbatore central prison) > Add

Thus the digitised polygon from Google Earth pro is added into QGIS.
2.5: GIS DATA FROM OTHER MAPPING SOURCES IN QGIS:
STEP 1 - Click on the "Layer" menu > Add Layer > Add Delimited Text Layer (CTRL+ SHIFT + T)

STEP 2 – NEXT, We have many different options that we may need to change depending on the specific
data set that we have.

The most common fields needed to be changed.

o Browse - click on Browse and find the folder where the CSV file is saved and open the file.
o Layer name - the name of the CSV will show up here.
o File format - depending on the version of QGIS you are using, you may need to verify the
file format.
o Geometry definition - If we have x, y coordinates we will choose the "Point coordinates"
option. Verify the X Field is pointing to our Longitude field and the Y Field is pointing to
our Latitude Field. If we have a table with no x,y coordinates, then we will choose the "No
Geometry" option.
o Layer settings - We will see a preview of the table and verify that everything looks
correct.
Click on point co- ordinate > X field should be longitude ( lng ) and Y field should be Latitude ( lat )

STEP 3 : Then click on geometry CRS > Coordinate Reference System Selector > Selection Projection and
search for EPSG:4326 > ok
( Or )we can change the coordinate reference system (CSR) for the convenient system of our work also.

1.First, right click on the required layers and choose set CSR Or Layer CSR.

2.With the help of this CSR can be changed.
