Introduction

It is through dating that marriages are established. Here, one can argue dating is the initial

procedure through which a given marriage is enhanced. This research aims at revealing both

similarities and differences between online and real-life dating based on their application. Online

dating refers to the situation whereby two people meet online via social platforms and start

engaging. On the other hand, real-life dating occurs when people meet face-to-face to set up a

date from the initial meet. Unlike the previous years, advancement in technology has encouraged

many people to prefer online dating. There are significant differences and similarities between

real-life and online dating.1

Similarities between Online Vs. Real-Life Dating

One of the similarities between real-life and online dating is that both acts aim to find a

lover based on communication. Both real-life dating and online dating could result in successful

marriage depending on terms set by the partners. 1 This assertion is supported by the fact in the

previous years, people were dependent on real-life dating, also referred to as traditional dating.

However, the current technological age has increased the number of online dating sites, thus

increasing the number of marriages. Another similarity is that both real-life dating and online

dating are prone to separation. In most cases, separation results from a misunderstanding

between partners who exist due to both dating.1

Differences between Online Vs. Real-Life Dating

On the other hand, there are differences between real-life and online dating. First, there is

a location difference between both dating. For the success of real-life dating, partners have to

come from the exact general location for purposes of meeting face to face. However, in online

dating, the general location is not a factor as partners from different parts of the globe could meet

on online dating sites. This makes real-life dating expensive compared to online dating. In this

regard, consider that real-life dating involves transportation and dinner costs, unlike online

dating that only requires an internet connection.

The time frame for real-life dating is long as partners must engage in communication to

plan for the first meet. 2 Also, real-life dating involves dinner plans and dates that could consume

a lot of time. On the other hand, online dating is quicker as partners are likely to go straight to

the point during the conversation with minimal interruption cases. For instance, during an hour

of online dating, partners are likely to share their personal information, unlike in real-life dating

that is likely to be interrupted by hotel attendants and other subjects during dinner.

Also, online dating is associated with deception, unlike real-life dating that encourages

face-to-face meetings. Online dating could choose to deceive their partners by sending wrong or

old pictures that fail to show their actual appearances. 2 However, in real-life dating, partners are

likely to meet face to face, thus making decisions at first sight. Here, partners have the power to

choose whether to continue with the relationship or not. Finally, various research reveals high

chances of divorce and separation in online dating compared to real-life dating. Here, note that

partners fail to acquire first impressions of second parties upon dating on online sites. For

instance, a partner in online dating would choose to show kindness through conversations. In this

case, partners would fail to determine their partner's ignorance.

Conclusion

As depicted above, it is more likely that partners who experience real-life dating would

succeed than those who engage in online dating. This assertion is based on the fact that real-life

dating is accompanied by credibility compared to online dating. However, the fact that civil

marriage hardly considers the form of dating reveals that both dating could be effective. In this

case, partners' preferences would greatly matter. In conclusion, one can deduce that a marriage's

success depends on the partners' decisions. However, the form of dating should be an aspect of

significant consideration.
