The Basics of Good Project Management

Professor Greta Blash from the California Southern University gave a talk during
2015 about the basics of good project management. According to the association of
project management or APM, it is he process of leading the work of a team to achieve
all project goals within the given constraints. This information is usually described in
project documentation, created at the beginning of the development process. The
primary constraints are scope, time, budget. From that point of view and simpler terms it
is the art of organizing a project from start to finish. According to Prof. Blash’s portfolio
she has over 8 specialties, namely Program/Project Management, Program/Project
Management Office (PMO), Business Analysis (BA), Benefit Realization, Business
Intelligence (BI), Hybrid agile approaches, Customer Relationship Management (CRM),
Enterprise Architecture/Data Modeling/Conversion/Migration. In addition, she also
stated that she has “Proven leadership, superior communication and presentation skills
and the ability to interact and build strong relationships and rapport with team members,
management and customers.” On the 16-minute time mark, she has explained the
Project management phases. In total, there are over 4 phases of project management,
namely Initiation, Planning, Execution, and lastly Closing. The initiation part asks the
why in your project. “Why do you want to start your project?”, “Why is your project
important”, next part is the planning, this is the part where scope, time, budget is being
taken into consideration since all these constraints is what going to affect your plan. In
addition, the execution part is what type of strategy we will impose during this plan and
lastly, the closing part is how will we celebrate or commemorate the project we have
done. I think my main takeaway in this seminar is how we plan; we must integrate the
performance of our activities per project management plan to see where the parts are
we have succeeded and the parts we need to improve the most. In addition, it is
important to communicate effectively in a project to avoid any misinterpretation or
mistakes. Since some of the projects has little to no room for error.
