Rizal Movie Reaction Paper

I watched Bayaning Third World for this reaction paper, it was only available during the

Rizal Day on Vimeo. I would say that it is a refreshing movie to spotlight Rizal’s work

and life. The movie tackles if Rizal’s life behind his glorious sacrifice and martyrdom. It

suspends and split hairs to the tiniest bit. It is almost like behind the glitz of his life. What

where his family life was and his relationship with Josephine Bracken. I would say that

our lessons diverge in this movie in terms of his life, it did not tackle that much about his

early life, but it did mention his carving of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Sculpture that Rizal

did when he was young. Rizal was a religious man in his early life, he was still religious

in his adult life, but the focal point of his adult life was his writings and studies abroad.

During his time in Europe, he has been accompanied by some people who does not

have the same faith as him. Some of them were atheists, agnostics, and protestant.

Which his mother, Donya Teodora has frowned upon. She is frightful that his hijo will

turn against the teachings of the Friars. Her most feared day will come but not because

her son turned against the church and became an atheist, but his writings were

criticizing the church. This in turn infuriated the Government and sentenced him to die

by Asphyxiation but since he is a student of the Jesuits, from Ateneo de Manila. The

Jesuits has found a way to make his punishment more lenient, even though it was

ticking time bomb for Rizal. In Dapitan, he became a very busy person, he started to

plant, to heal people in Dapitan, he has a regular traffic of patients, he started collecting
insects, lizards etc. and done taxidermy and taxonomy just to make himself busy. Until

he met Josephine Bracken.

As of the moment the movie has little divergence in our lesson, it did not tackle the

specifically his early life, but it did tackle what happened in the Hacienda, how his family

was expelled on their own homes and his three sisters accompanied their mother.
