identifying and reporting inadequacies in existing risk controls and monitoring
outcomes to ensure a prompt organisational response
reporting on the cost of WHS training
keeping WHS records
analysing aggregate WHS data to identify hazards and monitor risk control procedures in work area.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Knowledge Evidence
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
outline the legal responsibilities and duties of managers, supervisors, persons conducting businesses or
undertakings (PCBUs) and workers in relation to WHS risk management in the workplace
identify key provisions of relevant WHS Acts, regulations and codes of practice that apply to the business and
outline how they apply in the work area
explain organisational policies and procedures relating to hazard identification, risk management, fire,
emergency and evacuation, incident investigation and reporting
explain the importance of effective consultation mechanisms in managing health and safety risks in the
workplace
explain how the hierarchy of control applies in the work area. Please note, Victoria has yet to agree to the
harmonisation framework and as this is a national unit of competence you will need to state which state or
territory you will be basing your responses on.
Directions:
1. Using the Hazard Identification Checklist on the next page (Appendix2), conduct a safety audit/inspection of
an Australian workplace and identify and record a minimum of three hazards. If you cannot access an
Australian workplace, conduct a safety audit/inspection of your classroom.
Ans: The three hazards of my workplace are:
Slippery floor and falls
Improper storage, messy environment
Fire and electrical hazards
2. Consult with at least two (2) colleagues to seek feedback and further information as to how you can improve
on your identified risks and recommended solutions /improvements. You must record this consultation in a
short video (maximum 5 minutes’ duration) and upload the video into Moodle as part of your assessment.
3. Develop presentation slides based on the audit you conducted your consultation. Ensure you include:
the hazard you observed
specific examples or causes of the hazard
potential risks associated with the hazard
the consultation undertaken and its outcome
solutions/improvements for the hazard
the importance of consultation in managing hazards and risks
organisational procedures for consultation
4. Provide options for safety training to be conducted to manage the hazards you identified; consider the costs
to the enterprise. Include your training options in your slides including your cost estimates for the training
you recommend. Note: You will not be required to deliver the presentation for this assessment task.
