Maximizing group cohesiveness

There are many factors that would increase group cohesiveness which defines the degree

of closeness to which the member in a group feels. This factors extents from compatibility of the

individual goals and the group’s goal. In other words the more the group members are attracted

to each other, then how the overall group goal aligns to their own goal would increase

cohesiveness in the group.

The techniques the counselor would use to maximize the group cohesiveness would

include: identifying any problem among the individuals and coming up with ways to solve them.

Helping each member of the group to participate actively, listening to all member opinion. The

The facilitator models the group’s behavior by first setting an example to them. Counseling

approach of individual members at a personal level. This would help them in the way they think

about themselves and how they perceive the environment they work in.

According to Stewart, Courtight, & Barrick (2012) norms in a group are likely to be

applicable if the behavior in the group are also predictable. If every members of the group decide

how to behave in every situation then it would affect the routine of the group activities. More so

the group members would have a challenge in predicting other group member’s behavior and

responding correctly. The counselor is responsible with discouraging any misconduct and norms

that inhibits good relationship. The counselor explain the consequences and how the behavior

might affect their performance.

The counselor have the responsibility of providing a therapy to the group members in

form of talking to them. This help the group members with mental problems this technique is

called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This technique bases its therapy on how the

affected group members feel (emotion), how they think (cognition) and behave with other group

members. When an individual is affected emotionally, then the way interpret situations in a group

Repeated behavior in the individual group members can be prevented by repeated

interventions by helping the affected member to avoid the stimuli and adapt new ways to

maintain full recovery. According to Hunter et al (2013) examination of the patient under

analysis indicates a positive outcome while using the therapy. It however needed consistent in

treatment for it to be effective and also for the patient to have a productive drug free lifestyle.

With continual support of the counselor, the patient develops self-awareness and with help of
