PENCIL SKETCHING

Sketching is drawing without too much details. It may suggest a

person, an object, a scenery, or simply an idea. Sketching is usually
done spontaneously, meaning, right on the spot. Artist make
sketches to give a mental picture of what is his or her mind. There
are times when sketching is needed to prepare for a bigger art
project. But given this reasons, its does not make sketching a lesser
art. It is an art itself.
The most basic shapes are essential sketching. These shapes are
circle, square, rectangle, oblong, and the triangle. Knowing the
dimensional shapes also helps a lot when one wants to do
sketching. The cube, cylinder, cone, and the pyramid are all
dimensional shapes.
Pencil Drawing Techniques
1. OUTLINE- use a light outline to make a guidance of what you are
about to sketch. to create a light outline, reduce the pressure
onto paper. move the pencil slowly and lightly.
• use a heavy outline for final details of the sketch. if you are
satisfied with the lines and shapes of your subject, hold the pencil
closer to the nib to have a better control and increase the
pressure of the pencil onto the paper.

2. HATCHING- this is like making small lines bunched together to

create shading. this is like a shading technique. hatching also has
light and heavy strokes. to create a heavy strikes, add pressure to
the pencil.
3. Cross_Hatching- The same as hatching but this is the repeated in
the opposite direction in a second layer on top of the first layer. This is
also a shading technique that can improve the texture of your work.

4. Stipping- this technique is similar to hatching but the lines are much
smaller. Stipping is usually used for finer details like the eyes.

5. Back and Fourth Stroke- this is also a shading techniques with the
pencil moving in a back and forth motion at the faster speed
towards one direction. With this, you can also create light and heavy
strokes.

6. Scumbling- This is moving the pencil in circular motion keeping

them all very compact. This technique suggests smooth texture and is
good for blending the light.
