Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: What do you know about the different types of rocks and layers of soil?
Content Area/Grade Level(s): Science (Types of Rocks and Soils) and 3 rd Grade
Content Standard Addressed: S3E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the physical
attributes of rocks and soils.
Technology Standard Addressed:
1.1 c: Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate
their learning in a variety of ways.
Selected Technology Tool: Wakelet

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): N/A

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The technology tool that I used Wakelet supports all students learning. Thinking about the UDL principles, this
Wakelet activity and the technology tools I selected support and enhance the learning experience for
students in the classroom by allowing the students to explore the new topic they are learning through
watching videos, exploring websites, and answering questions. Wakelet supports the Engagement component
of the UDL framework by allowing students to engage in the activity through the different mediums provided
videos, questions, and websites. Wakelet supports the Representation component of the UDL framework by
activating the students background knowledge that they know about the rocks that they have found around
their houses. Finally, Wakelet supports the Action and Expression component of the UDL framework by
allowing students the options to answer the questions using a whiteboard to write the answer, typing the
answers using Microsoft Word, or writing the answers on a sheet of paper.
Lesson idea implementation:
As I address the standards that I chose both technology and science standards, students will go through the
Wakelet and watch the videos included, explore the resources included, and answer the questions included in
the Wakelet that I have created. Teachers will walk around the classroom, while students are completing the
Wakelet to help students work through the Wakelet and answer any questions that the student might have.
The Wakelet Activity will be introduced by having the students bring a rock in to school that they found at
home, and we will look at different students rocks and talk about the different types of rocks they brought in.
Then I will introduce the different layers of soils and have the students start working at their own pace
through the Wakelet by themselves. This activity should take between 45 minutes to an hour to complete.
Student learning will be addressed by going over the answers to the questions that they answered in the
Wakelet as a group to make sure all students understand the different layers of soil and the different types of
rocks that can be found in their environment. The final product will be used to inform and differentiate

learning because students will have the choice of writing their answers on a piece of paper, writing their
answers on a whiteboard, or typing their answers to the questions on Microsoft Word. I will conclude this
lesson by having the students trade rocks and try and figure out what type of new rock they have. Then the
students will trade back their rocks so they can have their original rock that they started the activity with.
Finally, I will provide feedback as I am walking around helping students through the Wakelet and when we are
going over the answers to the Wakelet as a class.
Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson idea using Wakelet, I feel the activities I created could impact student learning by
allowing them to explore the different types of rocks and soils through videos and answering questions in the
Wakelet. I don’t think that there are other technology tools that could further enhance this activity. The only
thing that I could think of that might be useful for this activity is using Microsoft Word for the students to
record their answers to the questions. Overall, I think that this Wakelet activity enhances the students’
learning about rocks and soils.
