Information Sheet 5.

1-1
Test devices/ systems and/ or installation

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Identify the ways on how to test devices/ systems and/ or installation.
2. Test devices/ systems and/ or installation.

The key to successful testing of computer hardware and software is

proper planning and preparation. Gather all the components you’ll be using
and find a dry, well- ventilated place to do your work.
After the installation process, testing should be conducted. It checks
whether the installation process performed is a success or not. It also
determines the errors found in your computer hardware and software.

* When you developed your installation plan for the component, you would
have developed a plan to test your component.

UNIT TESTING
 This test ensures that a given
function works

Steps:

Visual Inspection
Most of the time you should begin your testing by performing a visual
inspection. Here are some useful guidelines for testing:
 Check the outside of the system
 wLook for disconnected or loose cables
 Check all front panel light indicators
 Try removing unnecessary components
 Trade good for suspected bad (i.e swap monitors, mouse, keyboards, hard
drives, video cards etc.)
 Try restarting the system, once or several times
 Check BIOS settings
 Examine information provided during the boot up process.

 Click programs and features

Check BIOS settings

 Power on the computer, press F2 or delete key while the system is
performing the POST (power-on-self-test) to enter BIOS setup utility.

FUNCTIONAL TESTING
 This test is conducted to ensure the system behaves according to the
functional requirements.

HARDWARE TESTING
Testing is necessary to ensure that you have installed a component properly,
and that it is working properly. The testing process will depend on:
 the type of hardware device.
 the operating system.

Software testing involves the execution of a software component or system

component to evaluate one or more properties of interest. In general, these
properties indicate the extent to which the component or system under test:

 Meets the requirements that guided its design and development,

 Responds correctly to all kinds of inputs,
 Performs its functions within an acceptable time,
 Is sufficiently usable,
 Can be installed and run in its intended environments
 Achieves the general result its stakeholder’s desire.
