1. SCOPE
A. This specification covers the basic requirements for the design and construction of
Low & Medium Voltage Variable Frequency Drives, hereinafter designated as VFD.
Reference JOB SPEC No. 1020-13-00-1602-ET-004 “Electrical Switchboard” for
construction details.
The most important publication relevant to the matter of this specification is:
A. General
B. All equipment shall be treated and packaged for tropical environment, due to
possible storage in an open area before installation or air-conditioning failure. In
addition, all necessary anti-condensation space heaters shall be provided.
If mechanical cooling fails, equipment shall withstand without any damage and
degrading a temperature of 40°C and 71% relative humidity.
E. The equipment located outdoors shall be able to operate continuously in the site
climatic conditions specified above at the rated values given in the relevant
document.

4. GENERAL
A. Unless otherwise specified, the utilization power shall be 480 V, 3-phase, 3-wire,
60 Hertz, solidly grounded.
B. The VFD shall consist of solid state controllers, circuit breakers, starters and other
devices as specified.
C. The VFD and components shall be of, or modification of, the Manufacturer’s
standard product line in order to facilitate procurement of spare parts.
E. Enclosure shall be a minimum IP 31 painted with a rust inhibiting primer coat and
manufacturer’s standard paint.
6. CONTROLLER
A. The variable frequency, variable voltage AC controller shall be pulse width
modulated (PWM) type and suitable for:
1. 110% min. overload for thirty (30) minutes (variable torque load only).
Forced air cooling shall be supplied with failure alarms and requires customer
approval.
1. Overload in excess of 110% for thirty (30) minutes and short circuit conditions-
current trip.
4. Motor thermal overload trip. The manual reset shall be located at the electronic
power supply module.
6. Single phasing.
10. If specified in MR, a by-pass contactor with circuit breaker, interlocked with
isolating manual transfer switch and connected to the primary supply shall be
provided.
13. Contactor shall be provided for momentary run-stop operation and to ensure
positive disconnect of motor when stop function is indicated.
14. Control circuitry shall be of 120V AC and shall be electrically isolated from the
power controller.
16. Two N.O. and two NC contacts for remote indication of motor status.
17. Line and load reactors (to limit harmonics and standing waves).
operating temperature.
7. All terminal strips, controls and test points shall be legibly marked.
8. All wiring shall be single conductor, color coded copper, 90°C min. insulated,
and sized for proper current carrying capacity.
10. All hardware components shall be heavy cadmium plated or stainless steel.
11. Nameplate, data plate and equipment identification number shall be legibly
marked on stainless steel and permanently attached to the equipment. It shall
include (but not limited to) the following data: manufacturer name and type or
part number, description name, serial number, duty class, input/output ratings
kVA, kW, voltage, current, frequency range, ambient temperature limits, etc.
13. Control and monitoring shall be integrated into the EMCS (Electrical Monitoring
and Control System).
14. Special care shall be taken to ensure that the VFD’s are matched properly with
an appropriate motor. The ratio of voltage increase (dU/dt) and Upeak (the
inductance of the motor will cause an overshoot of the motor voltage before it
stabilizes at the voltage of the intermediate circuit) can influence the lifetime of
the motor. Very high values primarily effect motors without phase to phase
insulation barriers. If motors without insulation barriers are used or the motor
cables are long (300m. shielded cable), it is recommended to install the optional

LC-filter module. The VFD must meet the requirements of IEC 34.17, curve B,
with standard norm motors.
7. CONTROL WIRING
A. Control wiring in the motor starter units shall be stranded copper conductors not
less than 1.5mm2 having 600 volt 90°C minimum operating temperature heat
resistant insulation.
B. Power wiring from motor controller to motors shall be 4mm 2 minimum, having 600
volt 90°C minimum operating temperature heat resistant insulation.
C. Control wiring shall be terminated on marked terminal blocks. 20% spare terminal
points shall be provided on terminal block for use by others.
D. Control wiring in the VFD shall be marked with heat shrink type wire markers.
E. Control wiring shall be shielded provided with suitable brackets and connection
accessories for EMC reasons.
8. NAMEPLATES
A. Each VFD line-up shall be provided with one phenolic main nameplate with black
lettering on white background, mounted in center of VFD line-up. Lettering height
shall be minimum 12.5mm.
B. Each controller shall have one phenolic nameplate with black lettering on white
background which shall be fastened by means of stainless steel screws. Vendor
may quote an alternate permanent yet changeable method for approval if he
chooses.
2. 5mm for main titles such as circuit or cubicle designation, motor or feeder
number and service title.
B. Each controller unit in Manufacturer’s shop shall include, but not be limited to, the
following: visual inspection, megger test, load test, voltage and frequency control
test, loss measurements, polarity and phase rotation test, output wave shape test,
etc.
1. Overall dimensions.
2. Approximate weight.
3. Heat dissipation.
