What is Professional Learning?

Teachers engage in professional learning to stimulate their thinking and

professional knowledge and to ensure that their practice is critically informed and
current.

When a wide range of high-quality, sustained professional learning experiences

are undertaken, teachers are more likely to inspire pupils and provide high-
quality teaching and learning experiences, enabling learners to achieve their
best.

It is important that professional learning provides rich opportunities for teachers

to develop and enhance their professional knowledge and practice, in order to
progress the quality of learning and teaching and school improvement.

Critical self-evaluation is an important part of the professional learning and PRD

process. The GTCS Professional Standards offer constructive support for
teachers as they consider how they might develop their professional values and
dispositions, their knowledge, skills and understanding through on-going critical
self-evaluation and professional learning.
What is learning

Learning is an indispensable tool that nourishes our minds and soothes our
soul. It is a necessity for both personal and professional career as it makes us
capable of understanding and handling things in a better way in life.

Learning aids in acquiring critical thinking skills and discovering numerous

ways in which we can relate with people from different cultures. It is the only
way to deal with the continuous change in our life so that we can move
forward with ease.

Learning is a continuous process that encourages acquiring competencies,

knowledge, and skills to develop future opportunities. Knowledge is no longer
difficult to obtain as it is now readily available at our fingertips.

Encourage the habit of reading, building a network that encourages learning,

asking questions, conducting investigations and research and exploring all
other avenues of learning so that every day is a new day and you learn
something during your daily life.

Curious minds are the best ones as they do not hesitate to explore different
and challenging horizons. Show your intent, be sincere, ask for clarity, be
curious, experiment, keep reflecting, be inquisitive and keep the momentum
going if you want to step up in this path. It is intellectual growth that helps us
to observe the world through bright eyes, evaluate the things we are seeing,
appraise on what we have learned and apply our learning into everyday life

Transcript of 'When do babies begin to learn?' video
Alison Gopnik, Ph.D.: Learning begins literally from the time babies are
born and there's even some evidence there's learning inside of the
womb. So when babies are born, for instance, they discriminate between
the sounds of the language that they've heard and sounds of another
language. So they're already seeing, hearing, making sense of what's
going on around them.

Jack P. Shonkoff, M.D.: From the moment of birth, when you cut the
cord, that baby is taking in the environment, is responding to the
environment, is learning. So I think the big new message...In the old
days, 10 years ago, people would say, "So when does a baby start to
see?" or "When does a baby start to hear?"

Jack P. Shonkoff, M.D.: Or people would think about learning in

preparation for school, people would say, "Well, so...The year before you
start school we should make sure that a child is oriented towards
learning." Learning doesn't begin then, learning starts in infancy. Babies
are learning all the time. So I think that's the most important message
about the early childhood years is there's a lot going on inside that little
head right from the moment of birth. And we need to understand it, we
need to respect it, we need to understand how much what happens early
on can affect things later on.
