Treatment of Hair Care and Scalp
Background Information for Learners
Hair is an appendage of the skin. It is a slender, thread-like outgrowth
of the skin and scalp of the human body. There is no sense of feeling in the
hair of the head and body, due to the absence of nerves in the hair.Full
grown hair, as found on the human body, is divided into two principal parts
the hair root and the hair shaft.

The purpose of Hair and Scalp Treatment is to preserve the health and
beauty of the hair and scalp. Scalp treatments also assist in overcoming and
combating disorders of the scalp, such as dandruff and loss of hair. The
scalp and hair should be kept clean by frequent treatment and shampooing.
A clean scalp will resist a wide variety of diseases.

Professional hair and scalp treatments are effective to address multiple

problems of the scalp and degrading hair quality, including hair loss.
Scalp manipulations stimulate the circulation of the blood to the scalp,
rest and soothe the nerves, stimulate the muscles and the activity of scalp
glands, render a tight scalp more flexible, and promote the growth and health
of the hair.

Even the normal healthy person should have scalp treatments to

preserve the natural health of the hair. The cosmetologist, therefore, should
always recommend the proper cosmetics applications to counteract the
danger of a dry and scaly scalp, or the proper treatment to overcome an
excessively oily condition of the scalp and hair.

The ability to observe and analyze are for the hairdressers. A Hair and
Scalp Analysis will help the hairdresser make a professional judgement in
selecting and applying cosmetics and other hair treatments.

The cosmetologist may treat common and minor conditions because

the scalp and hair are vitally related, many scalp disorders need correction,
in order to keep the hair healthy. A healthy scalp will produce a healthy
hair.

Blow-Dry Hair

Background Information for Learners

The lesson deals with hair drying techniques and sectioning. This will
also get you acquainted with the blow-drying units, the ways of giving
finishing touches, and the safety measures involved when drying the hair.
Drying hair is the process of styling wet hair while blow-drying it. Using
a dryer, use a variety of techniques to create different effects. While directing
heated air on to the wet hair, mold the hair with brushes, using a comb or
your fingers, position for the desired style.
There are different Blow Styling Techniques or methods to mold or style
the hair:
Blow-waving – is shaping the hair into waves, using directed heated air from
the hair dryer, combs, brushes, or your hands.
Blow –Drying – simply drying the hair with the dryer. It is used to blow dry
hair into a chosen shape, or in required direction.
Scrunch Drying – is the gripping and squeezing clumps of hair while directing
heated air into the hand. The process yields a casual, ruffled, molded shape.
Finger or Hand Drying – is the lifting, pulling, and directing hair with the
fingers or hands.
Blow-Combing – is drying and shaping using a comb, or a comb attachment
fixed to the dryer. It is a kind of blow drying that achieves shapes and
direction.
Blow-Stretching/Straightening – means of smoothing and straightening the
hair. A variety of brush shapes and sizes may be used.
Blow- Style – consist of shampooing the hair, softening it with a dryer, and
finally molding into shape using a blow-dryer.
Natural drying – leaving the hair to dry naturally, depending on whether the
cut and style are suitable.

Health And Safety Precautions When Blowdrying

1. Use only professional tools.
2. Ensure that all electrical equipment are in good order.
3. Never use electrical equipment with wet hands-to avoid electrocution.
4. Work comfortably. Avoid continually twisting or stretching your body.
5. Maintain high standards of hygiene.
6. Test the heat of the dryer before applying it to the client’s hair.
7. Do not keep the dryer in one place too long.

Things to remember
 Letting hair dry naturally is usually not a practical option, and doesn’t get the best
looking results for your hair.

15
Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.
 The more you blow dry, the greater the chances of damaging your hair.
 If you have time, keep the dryer at its coolest setting.
 Excessive heat is a major cause of hair dryness as it makes hair lose its natural
oils.

Equipment/Tools/Materials needed:
 Hair clamps/clips
 Bath towel
 Neck strip/shoulder cape

 Hairdryer- is the most important piece of

equipment you need. The dryer should have
adjustable speeds and temperatures and
period of durability.

Samvilla.com

 Hand dryer attachments such as nozzles

and diffusers, using the dryer without a nozzle
or diffuser allows for a wider directed air flow.

Samvilla.com

 Brushes – are probably the most

important items after blow dryers. A firm,
stiff bristles or plastic brush is required,
this will help you to grip, direct and control
the hair.

Samvilla.com

 Combs – should be of professional quality

and heat resistant. The comb should be
narrowly spaced teeth.

Fundamentals in Hair Perming
Background Information for Learners

Cold permanent waving or perming is a system of hair waving depending

for waving or curling action on chemical alone. In perming, curls or waves of hair are
close to the scalp. No heavy equipment is used.
Perming is the term given to the physical and chemical processing of straight
hair that wi ll change it into curls or waves. Throughout history, people have
experimented with their hair in attempt to make themselves more beautiful.
Cold perming is the way of changing through chemical process a
straight hair into curls or waves. There are several methods of giving a cold
perm. The suggested outline in this section is one of the several ways that
maybe used.
Cosmetologists and chemist have contributed many improvements to produce
the cold perming methods in use today. For best results, the cosmetologist should
follow the manufacturer’s directions.
Today, cold perming is the accepted method of permanently perming nearly
all types of hair. Exceptions are persons who may be allergic to the perming lotion
and those whose hairs
not take a cold perm satisfactorily.
To give a successful cold perm, the cosmetologist must have a thorough
understanding of the following:
 Hair and Scalp analysis
 Curling rods and chemicals
 Hair sectioning patterns
 Hair blocking and wrapping
 Applying perming lotion
 Processing
 Test curls
 Neutralizing
 Safety measures

For good cold waving results, the hairdresser should closely match:
1. materials, supplies, tools and implements needed.
2. strength of the waving lotion or neutralizer.
3. sectioning and blocking of the hair.
4. proper size of rods/winding the hair.
5. Test curling
6. Neutralization.
7. Safety and sanitary rules.

19
Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.
Basic requirements to give a successful cold wave.

1. WINDING AND WRAPPING THE HAIR

To form a uniform wave, with a strong ridge, hair must be wrapped
smoothly and neatly on each rod without stretching.
Tight wrapping or stretching interferes with this expansion and
prevents the penetration of the lotion or may cause hair breakage.
CAUTION: When wrapping the hair, always prevent bulkiness on the rod.
Bulkiness prevents the formation of a good curl because the hair cannot
conform to the shape of the rods.

2. SECTIONING AND BLOCKING OF THE HAIR
Blocking is a term usually used to designate the subdividing of the hair
sections. This done as each portion is wound around the rod. The size of the
blockings is determined by the diameter of the rods the density and the
texture of the hair.
Thickly growing hair requires smaller blockings and larger rods to
permit better arrangement for a wave.
The choice of the blocking pattern is dependent on the following factors:
Hair texture, length, contour of the head, wave pattern desired and the
preference of the cosmetologist and patron.
CAUTION: if too much hair is wound around the rod or wound too tight,
neither the waving lotion nor the neutralizer will penetrate, resulting in an
uneven wave formation.

There are four popular blocking patterns in cold waving:

1. Double halo 2. Single Halo

3. straight back 4. Dropped crown

pinterest.com pinterest.com
Sectioning – is dividing the hair into uniform areas. Uniform wave patterns
depend on:
 Uniformly arranged sections
 Equally subdivided sections
 Clean and uniform partings
 Blockings which should be about ½ inch shorter than the rod length.
.
3. CURLING RODS – proper selection
of curling rods is essential for successful
cold waving. Rods control the shape
of the hair shaft during the cold wave
process.
Suggested Hair blockings and rod
sizes
Coarse hair – smaller sections and
larger diameter rods
Medium hair – smaller hair sections and
large or medium.
Fine hair – smaller hair sections and
medium or smaller diameter.
pinterest.com

4. TEST CURLS – helps to determine in advance how the patron’s hair will
react to the cold waving process.
Test curl wave development method is the part of the processing
phase of a cold wave. Each head of the hair is different, conditions vary. A
patron’s hair will not always process the same length of time with its
permanent wave.
Wave development should be tested immediately after the last rod is
secured. Continue testing for wave development at regular intervals. Test on
different areas of the head each time. Do not use the same curl for retesting.
5. APPLICATION OF WAVING LOTION – if the hair is being wound with
waving lotion, apply the lotion ½ inch from the scalp, extend it to about I inch
from the hair ends. Be sure that the hair is moistened with the lotion, not
thoroughly saturated.
6. PROCESSING TIME – is the length of time required for the hair strands to

21
Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.
absorbs the waving lotion and complete the total rearrangement of the hair
cells around the rod.
Reminder: correct processing time can be the difference between success
and failure in cold waving.
7. NEUTRALIZATION (NEUTRALIZING) OF THE HAIR – the waving lotion
produces the curl formation by rearranging the cells of the hair shaft into a
new alignment. The rods hold the hair in this formation until it is “hardened”
or “fixed” by neutralization.
8. WAVE PATTERN FORMATION – as the hair is processing, the wave has
reached its peak when it forms a firm letter “S”. the size of the rod used to
determines the size of the “S” pattern or the wave formation.
9. TOOLS, SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS NEEDED
The materials used in perming the hair listed will render ease and
professional way of performing the activity.
1. Plastic Trolley – a handy tool used to hold the needed materials, tools use
in perming hair.
2. Hair Dryer – it is used to dry 80% of the hair before performing the
perming activities.
3. Drape pan – it is used to accumulate the excess cold wave lotion while
resaturating the curled hair.
4. Personal Protective Clothing – is a material used to protect the dress of
the patron and the operator.
5. Curling Rods – it is tool to produce curls and waves while the hair strands
are being wound around it.
6. Comb with Tail – a tool used to remove hair tangles.
7. Large toothed Comb – is a tool to combed out newly curled hair.
8. Hair clips and Clamps – is a tool use to hold the sectioned hair in place.
9. End Paper –they are porous paper used to ensure smooth winding of the
hair around the curling rods.
10 Neck strip – used to protect the dress of your patron from the small cut
hair during the cutting and trimming the hair.
11. Processing Cape – is to use over the head of hair after winding, to
ensure heat and help in the easy processing of the head of curl.
12. Perming Lotion (Cold Wave Lotion) – it softens the hair so that it
assumes the shape of the curler around which is wound.
13. Neutralizer – it stops the action of the waving lotion on the hair and sets
the new hair into a permanently curled position.
14. Application bottle – is used to hold the chemicals in perming; it is
especially made of plastic.
15. Shampoo and conditioner – it is used to wash out the applied chemicals.
16. Bath towel – it is used to wipe off excess water on the hair after
shampooing.
17. Tissue Paper – is used to wipe off excess moisture.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Prepare Client
Background Information for Learner

What is the lesson About?

The lesson deals on how to prepare the patron, the things that the operator
must do in order to check and analyze the condition and type of hair and scalp, and
the recording of previous treatments and present desired service outcome.

Analyze the Condition of Scalp and Hair

Scalp and Hair Analysis is a very important step before giving a permanent
wave is to make a correct and careful analysis of the patron’s scalp and hair
condition. The intelligent and professional approach is to learn all the possible facts,
such as:

1. Scalp condition – the scalp should be examined very carefully. Abrasions on the
scalp can make cold perming dangerous to a patron. An irritated scalp or badly
damaged hair is both a signs that cold perming should be postponed until the
condition is corrected.
2. Hair porosity- is the ability of the hair to absorb fluids or liquids. The porosity of
the hair determines how quickly the perm lotion is absorbed.
3. Hair texture - refers to the individual size of the hair strand and its degree of
coarseness or fineness. The texture and porosity are judged together in determining
the processing time.
4. Hair elasticity- is the ability of the hair to stretch and contract. Without elasticity,
there will be no curl on the hair. The greater the degree of elasticity the longer the
wave will remain in the hair, because less relaxation of the hair occurs.
5. Hair density- is the amount of hair strands per square inch on the scalp. Smaller
blockings and larger rods are often required for thickly growing hair.
6. Hair length- long heavy hair requires more perming than short hair because the
hair’s weight will pull on the curls.

Reconditioning Treatments for previously treated hair must be determined.

Dry, brittle or damaged hair which was previously treated, should be given
reconditioning treatment prior to cold hair perming.

PREPARING AND PLANNING THE PERM

For the patron, perming is a major step whose result she will have to live for
several months. She may not be familiar with the perm available. The oprator should
explain to the patron what perm is the most suitable to her.

26
Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.
What should be considered in preparing the patron prior to hair perming;
 Consider the style with respect to the patron’s age and lifestyle.
 Examine scalp closely if:
 There are signs of inflammation, disease, cut skin; and
 There is excessive grease or lacquer
 Shampoo the patron’s hair.
 Select the correct perm lotion.
 Always read manufacturer’s direction carefully.
 Take note of the decided style and cost involved to prevent misunderstanding.
 Minimize combing and brushing the hair.

AFTER CARE AND FINAL CARE OF A PERMED HAIR
After having a perm hair, you will need to condition your hair after
every shampoo, and use conditioning oil treatment once a week. Avoid over
brushing or blow drying for at least once a week after the perm, as the heat
may cause the hair to snap and split.
The after care of the patron’s cold wave helps to keep the hair in the
best possible condition.
 Check the results of perming.
 Has the scalp been irritated by the perm lotion?
 Is the hair in good condition?
 Is the curl even?
 Dry the hair into style. Depending on the effect you want, you may now
use finger drying or blow drying.
 Advise the patron on how to manage the perm at home. The hair should
not be shampooed for a day or two.
 Clean all tools thoroughly so that they are ready for the next patron.

Fundamentals In Haircutting
Background Information for Learners
In order to cut hair well, you will need to small assortment of tools. All these tools
must be sharp, in good condition, clean and sterile, and should never be kept in
pocket or left around out of their case.

To have systematize or good haircutting result you need to divide the working areas
called subsection. Elevation on the other hand, is the degree at which a subsection
of hair is held up from the head. This is done when hair is to be cut.

As a hairdresser you must be familiar with reference points. There are head location
where the surface of the head changes along the ear, jaw line, occipital bone, or
apex. These are used to establish guidelines. They guide the haircutters to:
 Find balance in the design, which means that both sides of the haircut look
alike.
 Ability to create the same haircut.
 Change technique in cutting the hair if the form or shape of the head is
irregular.
 These are the location of the head to used as reference
points:

a. Parietal ridge- Also known as the crest area, it covers the

widest area of the head. It starts from the temple, moving to the
bottom of the crown.

b. Occipital bone- found at the base of the skull. To locate, simple

feel the back of the skull.

c. Apex- located at the peak of the highest point on top of the

head. To locate, place a flat comb on top of the head.

d. Four corners-locate these by placing two combs flat against the

side and backthen locate the back corner at the point where the
two points meet.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Fundamentals In Haircutting

Background Information for Learners

The hair is divided into working areas called "Sectioning” is important for control
especially when you are detaching a haircut. It gives you an opportunity to create
consistent balance throughout the cut. Think of sectioning like cut and paste when
working on your computer. Sectioning can adjust based on the end result of hair
movement.

Good haircuts begin with an understanding of the shape of the head, referred to as
the head form, also known as head shape. Hair responds differently on various
areas of the head, depending on the length and the cutting technique used. Being
aware of where the head form curves, turns, and changes will help you achieve the
look that you and your client are seeking.

The ability to cut hair well is built on a structured and formal learning process.
Sectioning, using the comb and scissors, and understanding how to achieve balance
in a style are all essential elements of your learning. A competent and professional
haircut is the basis of good hairdressing. You should be able to create styles by
using different cutting techniques and you should be able to adapt your techniques to
suit your individual clients’ hair types and specific requirements. Cutting hair is the
foundation for styling hair. It incorporates balance, line and movement. As well as
having good technique, you should use care, precision, creativity and, above all,
control. A hairstyle is an expression of form and shape. Its purpose is to enhance
your client’s appearance.

Haircutting techniques

Coarse - rough or loose in texture.

Cross- check-verify information by using an alternative methods.
Elavation- the action of being lifted or raised to a higher level or position.
Layering-hairstyle where hair is arranged into layers with the top layers cut
shorter that the layers cut shorter that the layers beneath.
Shingling- to cut the hair in a short-cropped.
Slithering- a technique that stylists use to add texture and definition to their
client’s hair, and to thin out thick hair.
Tapering-diminish , reduce or cause to diminish or reduce in thickness toward one
end.
Undercutting- reduce in thickness away from the underside or lower part of the hair.
Haircutting- thinning and shortening the hair to the shape of the head or style.

Hair sectioning- separating strands of hair with the use of hair clamps to
control
Temple-the flat area at each side of the upper part of the face.

Sectioning of the Hair

Standard techniques for 7- section before the haircutting

 Divide hair into seven top, right, side, left side, right crown, left crown,
right nape, and left nape.
 Make clear parting lines from the point behind the ears on one side. Do
the same on the opposite side.
 Take parting lines.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Prepare Client

Background Information for Learners

Hairdresser should always observe and follow the salon’s code of practice including
any relevant health and safety laws, for example, the correct gowning procedure and
the safe disposal of used sharps. With thorough preparation, this will not only
present a professional image but also ensure the best use of the time available.

In order to present a professional image, you should always shampoo a man’s hair
prior to cutting. This will prevent any damage to your cutting tools by removing dirt or
debris from the hair. Your client may have come straight from work and his hair may
be dirty. It will also show your professionalism by preparing the hair correctly for the
cutting service. If so, there are so many clients/patrons are waiting for your service ,
give him/her a catalog of the different hair styles, so that he/she they will not get
bored.

The consultation you carry out with your client will determine your client’s
requirement. It also creates an opportunity for you to use your imagination and
recommend what you think will be suitable. There are certain factors that you must
consider when creating a style for a client. However, when consulting with a male
client , there are other factors that must be considered such as:

 The presence of male pattern baldness; and

 The presence of added hair.

Both these factors, if present need to address in your consultation.

As part of standard operating procedures, as soon as a client enters the salon,

he/she is warmly greeted by the salon receptionist or attendant then, is requested to
be seated on the client chair.

The hairdresser then attends to the client and does the following:

1. Ask what the client wants to be done with her hair and how she wants it done.
2. Examines client’s hair type-its texture, color, length, thickness, elasticity, and
porosity.
3. Give suggestions and/or advice voluntarily in an easy, gentle manner or if and
when client asks for it. Do not force the client to agree with your suggestion.

5. Client is escorted back to the client’s chair with her hair wrapped around with a
towel to dry. Another towel is wrapped around her neck to catch drippings.
6. Towels are removed. A neck strip is wrapped around her neck and a cape is a
draped around the upper body of the client for cover and protection.
7. Hair is combed smoothly. Direction of combing is from front going to the back.

Preparation of the Client before Haircutting

Gowning the Client. Gowning the client correctly is very important. This is to prevent
hairs from falling down the clients neck. It is necessary especially to male clients.
Use a strip of cotton wool or tissue to insert between the client’s collar and neckline.

Preparing the Hair. Remove any hairdressing products on the client’s hair by
loosening with a comb before shampooing. This will help to clearly see natural fall. If
the client does not want it to be washed, then spray it with warm water using a
mister.

Confirming the style. Once all the influential factors has been considered, confirm to
the client the length of the styles. Use a style book to confirm the idea that the client
wants.

Background Information for Learners

After thorough consultation/ assessment of the patron’s/client’s hair cutting needs,

the appropriate reception to be extended, analyzing the hair and scalp condition,
choice of hair cut he prefers and proper draping procedure to protect his/her clothing.
Other thing is, prepare necessary protective clothing for the preparation of shampoo
and/or condition the hair according to the salon procedures before cutting the hair.

Protecting yourself and the client should always be the topmost priority. When
cutting a client’s hair, It is essential to ensure that you adequately protect their
clothes from loose hair cutting. The only protective equipment needed will be for the
client’s benefits, for example, the gown, cutting collar, or neck strips. You must be
sure before you begin the cut that the grown covers all the clothing and no areas are
left exposed that may become covered with hair. Secure the gown properly to
prevent it from slipping off. Shampooing always use some other type of protection
like gown, following the salon\s requirements. For example, using a towel, cutting
collar, or neck strip around the shoulder when shampooing the client, this will provide
added protection and help prevent spelling of water to the shoulder/body.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Cut Hair

Background Information for Learners

The activity deals with the various haircutting implements, supplies and materials to
use. Proper handling of haircutting tools and correct hair sectioning in accordance
with standard haircutting proceduresand techniques are applied to achieve desired
styles of haircut. This is also includes the lines and angles while cutting the hair.
Safety and sanitary measuresare also emphasized.

Lines and Angles

Every haircut is made of lines and angles. Lines are then continuous marks while
angles are the surfaces formed when lines intersect at a given point. Because, of the
given natural shape of the head, two lines are drawn in haircutting- straight and
curve. By creating lines in the hair, the hair will fall into shape.

Types of Straight Lines

1. Horizontal line- these are lines that move from side-to-side. They
are parallel to the floor. This lines creates one-length and low-
elevation haircut and weight.

2. Vertical line- these are lines that move up and down. They are perpendicular to
the floor. These lines create graduated or layered haircuts.

3. Diagonal line-these are lines that are slanted or sloping in their

direction. These lines create fullness in a haircut and blend the long
and short layers of the hair. Diagonal lines are also used to cut the
ends of the hair for the purpose of increasing or decreasing slightly the
length of the hair.

 Holding the scissors in between the fingers, aim the points toward the
opposite hand and place the bottom blade on the hand.

 Moving the top blade only, open and close the blades

With practice, this exercise should be conducted without resting the

blade on the hand.

1. Hold the scissors correctly in between the fingers, place the arm upright,
balancing the elbow on a flat surface.

2. Using the wrist only, slowly move the scissors point left to right. Then open
and close the blades while moving the scissors slowly from left to right using
the wrist.

The Posture and Body Positioning

Good posture and body positioning are very essential when performing haircutting.
Hairdresser spend a lot of time working on their feet so as to avoid future back
problem, they have to take some considerations to ensure better haircutting result.

1. Position the client.Position the client at the most comfortable way, crossing legs
should be avoided. Using of hydraulic chair will keep the hairdresser’s body in the
same place.

2. Center your weight . To make the body balance at all times, work on your both
feet, stand firm and centered. Work straight on the task, with your head upright and
facing straight forward. Bending your knees is very important to avoid back and hip
injuries.

3. Work in front of your section. Standing directly in front of the cutting are has to do
with proper positioning of the body so as to avoid future back problem.

64
Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.
Procedures in Blunt Haircut

1. Section the hair into four parts

2. Section the hair from the forehead to the

nape. Take a parting that runs from the apex
to the back of the ear on both sides, and clip.
You have now divided the head into four
sections

3. Begin at the nape, on the left side, take a

horizontal parting approximately ½ inch from
the hairline, depending on the density of the
hair. Continue to create the first subsection.

4. With the client’s head upright, comb the

subsection in a natural fall from scalp to ends.
Comb the subsection again, stopping just
above the cutting line (desired length). Cut the
subsection and keep your shears horizontal
and parallel to the floor.

5. Returning to the left side, take down

another horizontal parting. Make sure you
should be able to see the guideline through
the new subsection. Comb the hair down in a
natural fall, and cut the length to match the
guide. Repeat on the right side.

6. Continue the process until you finish both

nape sections.

7. When you reach the crown are, comb the

hair into its natural falling position, and cut
with little or no tension to match the guide.
You have now completed the back of the
haircut.

65
Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.
8. Move to the sides of the haircut. Take
horizontal parting and part off a portion from
the back area to match. Comb the hair from
scalp to ends, release the subsection, and
allow the hair from scalp to ends, release the
subsection, and allow the hair to hand in a
natural fall.

9. When cutting the right side, your shears will

be pointing toward the back. To maintain
consistency in your line, take smaller
subsection, connecting at the ear first, and
gradually move forward with the line until you
reach the face.

10. Before moving on, check that both sides

of the haircut are even. Stand behind the
client and check the length on both sides
while looking in the mirror. Make any
adjustment needed.

11. Cross-check the haircut using vertical

sections, making sure that you do not over-
direct the hair. Elevate the hair slightly and cut
off any excess hair, removing only minimal
amounts.

12. Blow-dry the haircut with very little lift at

the scalp.
13. Once the haircut is dry, check the line in
the mirror. You should see an even, horizontal
line all the way around the head. This is the
time to clean up any hair at the neckline and
check where the hair falls when dry. Use the
wide teeth of the comb to connect the area.

14. Remove the drape and neck strip from the

client and dispose of properly.
15. Brush loose hair from the client’s neck and
face.

Procedures for Flat-Top for Men

1. Bring the clippers up to the crown. Move forward to the crown are, cut a square
area slightly longer that the desired finish result. This is the starting point to the flat-
top. The tip is to place the comb from front to back and side to side on the top of the
head and see where it touches the head. This will indicate the starting square size.

2. Cut the back graduation toward the crown, with the aim of the crown being the
shortest length on the flat-top.

3. Cut the sides to follow a vertical line toward the crest line. Go straight up the side
do not round off the corner.

4. Now determine the length at the front. The shortness of the front marks the length
of the flat-top. Work with small comb and use scissors and clippers to establish the
front length.

5. Work clippers in the opposite direction (i.e., stand on the side and bring the
clippers across from the other side toward you.

6. Look at the flat-top from all angles; it may look fine on one side but not when you
move around to the other side. When looking straight at your client from behind, it
can be advantageous to be wearing a white or light-colored shirt so that the line is
shown in silhouette against in the mirror.

Check Hair and Apply Appropriate
Finishing Touches
Background Information for Learners
After the hair cut, hairdresser needs to cross-check the final output. Cross-checking
should be done after every haircut to make sure that it is level and evenly balanced
from all angles. To crosscheck the haircut, comb and hold the hair in the opposite
way. Hair cut vertically should be checked horizontally, and hair cut horizontally can
be checked vertically. If you are sure vertical partings in a hair cut, cross-check the
length with horizontal partings. Any unevenness seen in the cuts can be corrected in
these manners.

Hairdressers know the techniques in blow drying, tips for checking accuracy and
finishing touches. Appropriate finishing cutting tool, hair finishing touches, proper hair
care and maintenance are emphasized in this Learning Activity Sheet.

Tips on Blow Drying and Styling

1. When using a hair dryer, keep it on a medium or low setting. Hold it 6-8 inches
away from the scalp
