Conversational Strategy

How to quickly learn English conversation or what we often call learning English
conversation is an important skill in this era.

English as an international language is now used in many ways. For example in textbooks
(bilingual), information on the internet and others.
The following will explain how to learn English conversation:

1. Voice Intonation Exercise (Pronunciation)

One of the drawbacks you'll find after trying to talk to other people using English is
pronunciation. For that, you have to train it.

Usually, when speaking in English, the other person sometimes doesn't understand what we are
saying. Or wrongly accept what we say. Because our English pronunciation is not good. For
example the pronunciation of snack with snake.

Therefore, learning pronunciation is very important so it takes a lot of practice in English

conversation so that your pronunciation will also run smoothly.

To practice pronunciation in English, you can use google text to speech.

English pronunciation has its own characteristics in each country. British and American
pronunciation are different.

Here's a glimpse of the procedures for learning English intonations:

A. Learning the English Phonetic Symbol

Learning phonetic symbols is the first step in pronunciation lessons. Before going further,
it is necessary to understand what the phonetic symbol means. Phonetic symbols are ways of
pronouncing words in English which are poured into writing. in other words, a simple way of
pronouncing words written with symbols according to pronunciation. Here will not explain in
detail about the English Phonetic Symbol, because it will be discussed in a separate material.

In a phonetic symbol there are vowel sounds (vowels), single sounds (monophthongsound) and
double vowels (diphthong). All three must be thoroughly understood so that there is no mistake
in pronouncing a word in English.

B. Recognize Sounds or voices in English

Recognizing the pronunciation of sounds in English is important in the process of

learning English. This makes it possible to learn orally via audio or video from the native. just
listen and guess the word that is being spoken in the audio or video. It is necessary to know what
sound is being heard, for example, the pronunciation of the word "bad" "whether you hear / bed /
or / bӕd /. have to be able to tell the difference.

C. Learn Phonetic Transcription and Word Emphasis

• Phonetic Transcription

Phonetic transcriptions are usually written in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA),
where each English sound has its own symbol. For example, the transcription of the word "no" is
noʊ and the transcription "do" is Du. Note that in spelling, these words are similar. Both words
end with the letter o. However, the phonetic transcription of the two words is different, because
the two words are pronounced differently. Phonetic transcriptions are usually written with a slash
(/), like this: / noʊ /, / du: /.

• Word emphasis (Word Stress)

Emphasis is also known as word stress. Usually we encounter it when we have a word
with a large number of syllables and one of these syllables is pronounced more strongly than the
other syllables. In phonetic transcriptions that can be found in dictionaries. Word stress is written
by using an apostrophe (') before the syllable that is read with emphasis. I took the word become,
which has phonetic / bɪʹkʌm / transcription.

One thing you should know is that if a word has only one syllable (for example: watch and pen),
dictionaries usually don't put stress marks before the word. So that in you it is not written / ʹpen /,
but only written / pen /. However, not all of you use a writing system like this example. Some put
a sign (') after the word that is pronounced by pressing it and some use an underscore (_) in the
syllable that is read by pressing it.

Emphasis on the first and second syllables on two syllable words

Examples of emphasis word criteria are bellow:

D. Tongue Position

If you want to have correct pronunciation, you must train your tongue to be able to sound
out each letter or word correctly. Maybe some of the letters that appear in a word and a little
difficult to pronounce. As in the pronunciation of L, R, and TH. Check out the following ways to
train your tongue.

• Pronunciation of L: Where the tongue should touch the back of the teeth and the roof of the
teeth. As an exercise, say the word Light repeatedly.

• Pronunciation of R: You need to know that "R" is pronounced with "ar" where the tongue is in
the middle of the mouth and does not touch the top of the mouth. As an exercise, say the word
Right repeatedly.

• TH pronunciation: Where to make sure the tongue comes out a little and is pushed in between
the upper and lower teeth. As an exercise, say the word Think over and over.
2. English sentence structure

Overall, there are four forms or sentence structures in English, namely:

1. Simple Sentence

Simple sentence is a sentence consisting of one independent clause. An independent clause has a
complete subject and verb and thought.

Example:

 Alfio likes chocolate.

 She receives the package.

2. Compound Sentence

A compound sentence is a sentence consisting of two or more independent clauses, or

independent clauses that are combined with a conjunction. Two important punctuation marks in
compound sentences are commas and semicolons.

Example:
 Our bike broke down; we can't go.
 Alfio didn't get enough sleep, for he drank much coffee last night.

3. Complex Sentence

A complex sentence is a sentence consisting of an independent clause and a dependent clause.

The dependent clause starts with a conjunctive pronoun, has a verb and a subject, but does not
express the complete thought.

Example:

 Do you know the man who is sleeping inside?

 He left after his mom called him.

4. Compound-Complex Sentence

A complex compound sentence consisting of at least two (or more) independent clauses and one
(or more) dependent clauses.

Example:

 Alfio didn't come because he was sick so Nina wasn't happy.

 Nina left after she got a call but she came back after three minutes. (

3. Opening and closing the conversation in English

Every time you talk to other people, it will be helped by the phase and finding the
approach used, here are the phases that can be used to open and close conversations in English:

Phase 1: starting a conversation

To start a conversation in English it is better to use a question sentence that is not too personal:

• Excuse me, do you have the time?

• Do you know what time is it?

• Hi. Is this seat taken?

• Do you mind if I sit here?

Phase 2: Outlining the topic

Now care needs to be taken to break down the topic at hand and keep talking. If it has been
answered, you can add more questions to get more details:

• Is that store near here?

• Was it good value?

• Do they have other colors available?

Phase 3: Expanding the conversation with lots of questions

If you are able to receive the talks, you can continue by expanding the questions:

• Are you from this area?

• So, what do you do for a living?

• Do you came here a lot?

Phase 4: exploring the topic further

When the conversation is on interest topic, you can discuss it in more depth:

• Really? I'm a (vegetarian) too! What made you decide to (stop eating meat)?

• I love (cats)! In fact I (have two) what type of (cats) do you have?

Phase 5: Requesting an Opinion

Everyone has an opinion about something and can share it with others. Here are questions to get
other people's views:

• I don't know. What do you think?

• Why do you thing that is (the case)?

• Is that a good thing or a bad think?

Phase 6: Changing the Topic

It's time to change the topic if the conversation partner has started to lose interest in talking,
here's how:

• That reminds me?

• Oh hey, did you hear that?

Phase 7: Invite the conversation partner to talk longer

Get confirmation that the other person wants to go deeper into the conversation; here are ways to
extend the conversation:

• I just realized you're probably in the middle of something. Do you have time to chat?

• Let me know if you need to get going. I don't want to take up all your time

Phase 8: Closing the Conversation

A good speaker knows when to close the conversation, here are a few sentences to close the
conversation:

 Well, if you ever want to chat again, I'm usually here (Every Monday afternoon)

• Feel free to call me if you want to hang out. Here, I'll give you my number

Here is an example of a conversation in English

Lastri :Excuse me, do you mind if I sit down?

Burhan :No. Let me move my bag.

Lastri : Thanks. By the way, do you live in the dorm? I think I’ve seen you there.

Burhan : Yes, I just moved in last week

Lastri :I live in the dorm, too.

Burhan :Oh, really? Do you like it?

Lastri : Yeah, it’s okay. It takes me about 5 minutes to get my first class in the morning

Burhan : I’m not so lucky. My first class is on the other side of the university. But I’ve got a
bicycle, so it doesn’t take too long

Lastri : I’ve got a bike, too. But I haven’t needed it this semeseter.

Burhan : Well, this is my stop coming up. By the way, my name is Burhan

Lastri : Hi, Burhan. I’m Lastri.

Burhan :Nice to meet you, Lastri. I’ll probably see you around.

Lastri :Okay, Bye Burhan
