group you first into two.

That will be your team throughout the

Are you familiar with the game

Good, because we are going to play

wordscapes.

The only difference is that instead of

connecting the letters, you are going to
tell the longest word you can form.

Wait for my signal before you answer.

The first team who can guess the correct

word will get a point.

If the answer is wrong, the other teams

may steal.

The team who will earn the highest point

will be the winner.
Some of the words are taken from the last
topic and others are related to our next
lesson.

Are you ready? Yes Ma’am!

Let the play begin.

our last lesson? Ma’am

What are the words that are not taken

from your last lesson? Ma’am, the word skimming!
Reading!
Scanning!
Serious Ma’am!

So what do you think is our topic for

today? Types of reading Ma’am!

Excellent! Now you know our topic for

today.

B. ANALYSIS
Before we go through the different types
of reading, let us first learn about
reading.

In your own words, what can you say

about reading? Reading is a skill which enables us to get
a message
That’s right! But there are other book
defines reading. Kindly read it.

(The student read the definition from the

presentation: Reading is the interaction
between text and readers)

Very good! Reading is involved text and

the reader. But during this interaction the
reader needs to understand carefully the
text, also known as comprehension. It’s
useless if you read it without
understanding so you must have to
comprehend it very well.

Now that we know what reading is. Let’s

identify the different types of reading.
Kindly read it.
(The student read the different types of
reading from the presentation: The types of
reading are: Scanning, Skimming, and
Serious Reading)

Very good, these are the types of reading.

Now let us know the types of reading one
by one. Kindly read the first one.

(The student read the definition from the

presentation: Scanning is used to find a
specific facts. For example, name,
Address, sports score in the newspaper.)

Well said, When you’re reading you don’t

have to read everything with the same
amount of care. Sometimes you need to
be able to read text very quickly.

For example, I have here a dictionary. (the student look at the dictionary)

Can you give me example of an adjective

word? Ma’am the word ‘lovable’

Okay, to look up the word ‘lovable’ in the

dictionary you wouldn’t start at the letter
A and read every word. The most efficient
way is to turn to the letter L and then
find the words beginning with Lo. So this
is what we call scanning.
Yes Ma’am
Did you understand?

Another example, I have here a (the student look at the newspaper)

newspaper.

(The teacher show the newspaper to the

student)

When you go through the page of sports.

Like, you want to know the scores of
basketball.

Just scan it and you can find very

quickly the specific details you want to
know.

Did you get it class? Yes Ma’am

Now give me the second type of reading.

(The student read the second type of

reading from the presentation: Skimming
Ma’am. Skimming is used to quickly
gather the most important information or
‘gist’)

Very good, this second type of reading

which is skimming is about looking for
the general idea. So if you want to know
what’s going on in the news, you might
skim through a website or a newspaper.

You wouldn’t have much detail but you

would find out the main points. Like here
in the newspaper.

(The teacher show an example in the

newspaper)

Did you see it class? Yes Ma’am

Did you understand? Yes Ma’am

To further understand there are several

steps of skimming. Kindly read. (The student read the steps of skimming
from the presentation:
1.Read the title carefully
2. Read the opening and closing carefully
3. Read the whole selection and take
notes only of what you find important)

Why do we need to read the title Ma’am, we need to read the title carefully
carefully? to find out what you can expect from the
article.

Very well said, why we need also to read

the opening and closing paragraph in the We need to read the closing and opening
article? to get an idea of the coverage idea of the
article

The last but not the least type of reading

is serious reading. In your own opinion
what is serious reading? Serious reading is when you are focusing
a certain topic.
Exactly!

(The teacher read the definition from the

presentation)

Serios reading or close reading is the

most important you need. It is not only
reading and understanding but also
involves making yourself sensitive to all
connotations of language as it is used by
skilled writers.

Any questions and clarifications? None Ma’am!

Very good!

C. ABSTRACTION

Class, what are the three types of reading

again? Skimming!
Scanning!
Serious Reading Ma’am!

Very good!

What type of reading that it is used to

quickly gather the most important or Ma’am Skimming!
‘gist’?

That’s right! What is the use of scanning? It is used to find specific facts, Ma’am!

Great!

What do you mean by serious reading? Ma’am, It means paying attention to what
is printed on the page
Very Good!
What are the three steps to get an
impression of the article? Ma’am the three steps are:
Read the title carefully
Read the opening and closing carefully
Read the whole selection and take notes
only of what you find important
Excellent!
D. APPLICATION
In your groups, answer the following
group activity.

elected? Why might this be the case? Well it seems to be a
tactic used to encourage us to buy more. If you are
walking around with an empty trolley, you are more
tempted to fill it, so if you a planning on only doing a
quick shop, always try to find a basket. It will be
lighter, easier to use and is sure to save you money!

Now test your skimming skills and answer the

questions below in the space provided.

1. What can you find in large numbers at a

supermarket?
2. Why can this be a problem?
3. How can you avoid spending more than you
planned?
4. Why is it a good idea to use a basket instead of a
trolley?
Answer key
