CHAPTER 2
ATA 100

INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this chapter is to describe the arrangement, numbering system, and spe-
cial features of the Air Transport Association format for aircraft maintenance manuals.
To take advantage of all the material presented in anATA 100 manual, the maintenance
technician must become thoroughly familiar with the outline and contents presented for
any given aircraft.

maintenance manual revision. Pages revised
or added in the current revision are indicated
by an asterisk.

REVISIONS
Additions, deletions, or revisions to the text
in an existing section are identified by a let-
ter R in the left-hand margin of the page ad-
jacent to the change. The R is al so placed next
to unchanged material when that material ap-
pears on a different page beca use of unrelated
technical changes. When extensive technical
changes are made to text in an existing section
that requires complete retype of copy, the R
appears full length of the text.

When an existing illustration is revised, a

pointing hand appears in the illustration point-
ing to the area of the art revision. New art
added to an existing section is identified by an
R next to the figure title and figure number.

SUMMARY
The introduction toan ATA 100-format main-
tenance manual provides an explanation of
the documentation procedures used for that
particular aircraft manual. Although the ATA
100 major chapter/section/subject specifica-
tion does not vary among aircraft manufac-
turers, there are usually minor differences
among maintenance manuals, such as tech-
niques for marking changes and their dis-
semination, which do vary from one
manufacturer to another. That is why the main-
tenance technician should read and under-
stand the introduction to the manual for any
particular aircraft that requires maintenance.
