Weeds
Weeds
● plants growing in an area where they
are not desired

● beneficial/harmful to man
● characteristics that makes them unique
and difficult to control
Weeds
1. Prolific seed production: - Weeds have high reproductive
capacity especially the annual weed e.g.
Amaranthus Spp - 96 – 235, 000 Seed / Plant
Eleusine indica - 41 – 135, 000 Seed / Plant

2. Wild range and growth

3. Seed dormancy
4. Spontaneous growth
5. High dispersibility
6. Adaptability
7. Bimodal reproduction

A. Collection and
Identification
1. Visit any crop area (lowland rice, corn, legumes, vegetables, fruit trees, etc.)
○ Take note of the weeds present in the area
2. Collect 15 samples (5 grasses, 5 sedges, 5 broadleaves)
Examine the samples collected using the data sheet (identification)
3. Prepare a compendium of weed species
○ scientific name
○ common name
○ local name
○ family name
○ date and place collected
○ name of the collector
○ good photo documentation (grabbing photos from the internet is strictly prohibited)
A. Collection and
Identification
4. You may download the following apps below to help you identify those
weeds that are unfamiliar to you:

eDamuhan (for lowland weeds) Plant Net (for upland weeds)

5. For further enhancement of your compendium, sign up and try using Canva
app (www.canva.com/education) or any editing apps you know.

B. Reporting
● Each student will be assigned to report orally in the class at least three
weed species. Pre-recorded reports should be prepared in case of problems
in the internet signal.

● The report shall include the following:

○ The scientific name, common names and local names of each weed species;
○ The family to which the weed belongs;
○ A description of the weed species
○ Photograph of weed species

● Oral reports without a weed specimen will not be accepted
