Lesson Idea Name: The Story of the Holidays

Grade Level/Content Area: Kindergarten – Social Studies
Content Standard Addressed: SSKH1 Identify the national holidays and describe the people and/or events
celebrated.

Technology Standard Addressed: 2.5.b Designer Design authentic learning activities that align with content
area standards and use digital tools and resources to maximize active, deep learning.

Guiding question or statement: Which holiday is your favorite?

Set a goal that you want to achieve with this plan for learning with the use of multi-media tools? Will you
use your video as a sample of what students will design or will you use the video for meaningful learning
about a topic? Be sure to mention what tool you/your students will use: My goal I wish to achieve for this
learning with the use of multi-media tools is to create a fun, engaging, and informative video using iMovie for
kindergarten students. This video will be used for meaningful learning about a topic.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) iMovie videos can be a great way to support all students especially the
ones who think and learn differently. By using video, I will be able to enhance the learning experience in my
classroom by providing a common knowledge base then extending that knowledge. Students are engaged
through image and audio, two elements this video efficiently uses.

Lesson idea implementation: As the standards are addressed, the students will begin to think about their
own interpretation of the national holidays while the teacher gives another interpretation. The project will be
introduced as meaningful learning about a topic after a discussion of different interpretations of each holiday.
The discussion will be short and the video itself will be no longer than 4 minutes. Student learning will be
assessed by watching how they react to the video. The final product will be used to inform learning through
viewing the video. The learning will be brought to a higher learning level by having them interact together
about their experiences. The lesson will be concluded with another short discussion after the video. Feedback
will be given positively throughout the concluding discussion.

Multimedia Tools: Video
Importance of technology: The use of a multimedia authoring tool is critical to this project because it engages
the students in a way that is fun and informative. Technology enhances student learning by connecting
previous knowledge to new content through audio and video implementation.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: I do not believe there are any possible internet safety or student privacy
issues that could arise through this learning experience considering the video I made is by me using published
material with no attribution needed and no personal information of the students is being collected.

Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea, I feel the activities I created could impact student
learning in a very positive way. If I had chosen to further extend this lesson, I would have done a matching
activity to use an assessment tool for myself to ensure this lesson was successful.
