ENGINE - 3.0L (4V)


ENGINE

The 3.0L (4V) is a V-6 engine that has the following features:

l Dual overhead camshafts


l Four valves per cylinder
l Sequential multiport fuel injection
l Composite lower intake manifold and composite upper intake manifold
l Aluminum cylinder heads
l 2-piece aluminum cylinder block
l Electronic ignition with 6 ignition coils

IDENTIFICATION

For quick identification refer to the safety certification decal:

l The decal is located on the LH front door lock face panel.


l An engine identification label is also attached to the engine.
l The symbol code on the identification tag identifies each engine for determining parts usage; for instance,
engine displacement in liters or cubic inch displacement and model year.

EXHAUST EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM

For operation and required maintenance of the exhaust emission control devices used on this engine, see
ENGINE EMISSION CONTROL - 2.3L AND 3.0L (4V) .

INDUCTION SYSTEM

The SFI provides the fuel/air mixture needed for the combustion in the cylinders. The 6 solenoid-operated fuel
injectors:

l Are mounted between the fuel rail and the intake manifold.
l Meter fuel into the air intake stream in accordance with the engine demand.
l Are positioned so that their tips direct fuel just ahead of the engine intake valves.

VALVE TRAIN

The camshafts are mounted in the cylinder heads and act against a roller follower to open and close the valves.

A hydraulic lash adjuster is located on one side of the roller follower and the valve tip on the opposite end. The
camshafts are driven off the front of each cylinder head by 2 chains (one each side). Both of the chains are
driven by sprockets that are located on the crankshaft, just in front of the oil pump.

POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION SYSTEM

All engines are equipped with a closed-type positive crankcase ventilation system recycling the crankcase
vapors to the upper intake manifold.

LUBRICATION SYSTEM

The engine lubrication system is of the force-feed type in which oil is supplied under full pressure to the
crankshaft, connecting rod bearings and timing chain tensioners. The flow of oil to the valve tappets and valve
train is controlled by a restricting orifice located in the head gasket.

OIL PUMP

The lubrication system is designed to provide optimum oil flow to critical components of the engine through its
entire operating range.

The heart of the system is a positive displacement internal gear oil pump.

Generically this design is known as a gerotor pump, which operates as follows:

l The oil pump is mounted on the front face of the cylinder block.
l The inner rotor is piloted on the crankshaft post and is driven through flats on the crankshaft.
l System pressure is limited by an integral internally-vented relief valve which directs the bypassed oil
back to the inlet side of the oil pump.
l Oil pump displacement has been selected to provide adequate volume to make sure of correct oil pressure
both at hot idle and maximum speed.
l The relief valve calibration protects the system from excessive pressure during high viscosity conditions.
l The relief valve is designed to provide adequate connecting rod bearing lubrication under high-
temperature and high-speed conditions.

COOLING SYSTEM

The engine cooling system includes the following:

l Radiator
l Dual electric fan assemblies
l Degas bottle (aids in maintaining the correct volume of engine coolant)
l Coolant thermostat
l Coolant hoses

ACCESSORY DRIVE

The accessory drive:

l has a single serpentine belt with 6 ribs.


l has an automatic drive belt tensioner.
l has a 3-ribbed water pump belt.

New drive belts must be of the same type as originally installed.

Check the drive belt condition at 160,000 km (100,000 miles) then after every 24,000 km (15,000 miles).

BELT TENSIONER

Automatic tensioners are calibrated to provide the correct amount of tension to the belt for a given accessory
drive system. Unless a spring or damping band within the tensioner assembly breaks, or some other mechanical
part fails, there is no need to check the tensioner for correct tension.

l To install, tighten to 9 N.m {0.9 kgf.m, 80 in.lbf}.


3. Using a suitable belt tension release tool, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise and
remove the accessory drive belt.
4. to install, reverse the removal procedure.

NOTE: l Refer to the illustration for correct belt routing.

ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT TENSIONER - 3.0L (4V)


REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See LIFTING .
2. Remove the pin-type retainer, 5 bolts and the RH lower splash shield.
l To install, tighten to 9 N.m {0.9 kgf.m, 80 in.lbf}.

3. Using a suitable belt tension release tool, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise and
remove the accessory drive belt.
4. Remove the bolt and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
l To install, tighten to 45 N.m {4.6 kgf.m, 33 ft.lbf}.

5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT IDLER PULLEY - 3.0L (4V)


REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

All Accessory Drive Belt Idler Pulleys

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See LIFTING .


2. Remove the pin-type retainer, 5 bolts and the RH lower splash shield.
l To install, tighten to 9 N.m {0.9 kgf.m, 80 in.lbf}.

3. Use a suitable belt tensioner release tool, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise and
remove the accessory drive belt.

LH Accessory Drive Belt Idler Pulley

4. Remove the bolt and the LH accessory drive belt idler pulley.
l To install, tighten to 47 N.m {4.8 kgf.m, 35 ft.lbf}.

Center Accessory Drive Belt Idler Pulley

5. Remove the bolt and the center accessory drive belt idler pulley.
l To install, tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.

RH Accessory Drive Belt Idler Pulley and Bracket

6. Remove the bolt and the 3 RH accessory drive belt idler pulley and bracket bolts. Then detach the wiring
harness retainer and remove the idler pulley and bracket assembly.
l To install, tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.

7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

REMOVAL

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See LIFTING .


2. Cut and remove the coolant pump belt.
l Discard the belt.

INSTALLATION

1. Install the water pump belt on the water pump pulley and position it on the camshaft pulley.

2. Remove the pin-type retainer, 5 bolts and the RH lower splash shield.
3. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to seat the water pump belt on the camshaft pulley.

CAUTION: l Do not use any screwdrivers, pliers or other metal objects that
could cause damage to the belt or camshaft pulley while
installing the belt.

4. Install the RH lower splash shield, pin-type retainer and 5 bolts.


l Tighten to 9 N.m {0.9 kgf.m, 80 in.lbf}.

REMOVAL

CAUTION: l During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important.


Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning
gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the
oil pan, can cause engine failure.

1. Remove the LH ignition coil-on-plugs. See IGNITION COIL-ON-PLUG - 3.0L (4V)

2. If equipped, remove the bolt and the engine lift bracket.


3. Remove the 2 bolts and the accelerator cable snow shield.
4. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube from the air cleaner outlet pipe.

CAUTION: l Do not disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube from the valve
cover or damage to the ventilation tube may occur.

5. Detach the upper radiator hose from the 2 retainers on the cooling fan shroud and position the hose aside.
6. Detach the 4 wiring retainers from the valve cover stud bolts.
7. Detach the 3 wiring retainers from the valve cover stud bolts and position the B+ cable aside.
8. Remove the 5 bolts, 8 stud bolts and the valve cover.
l Remove and discard the gasket.

NOTE: l Inspect the crankcase ventilation tube and valve cover sealing area. If
either a new valve cover or crankcase ventilation tube is required,
both components must be installed new.

INSTALLATION

1. Clean the valve cover, cylinder head and front cover sealing surfaces with metal surface cleaner and
install a new valve cover gasket.
2. Apply a 5 mm (0.19 in) dot of silicone gasket sealant to the front cover-to-cylinder head joints.

NOTE: l The valve cover must be installed and the bolts and stud bolts
tightened within 4 minutes of sealant application.

3. Position the valve cover and install the bolts and stud bolts. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown.
l To install, tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.

4. Attach the 3 wiring (B+ cable) retainers onto the valve cover stud bolts.
5. Attach the 4 wiring retainers to the valve cover stud bolts.
6. Attach the upper radiator hose to the 2 retainers on the cooling fan shroud.
7. Attach the crankcase ventilation tube to the air cleaner outlet pipe.
8. Install the accelerator cable snow shield and the 2 bolts.
l To install, tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.

9. If equipped, install the engine lift bracket and bolt.


l To install, tighten to 118 N.m {12.0 kgf.m, 87 ft.lbf}.

10. Install the LH ignition coil-on-plugs. See IGNITION COIL-ON-PLUG - 3.0L (4V)

REMOVAL

REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
2. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) tube.
3. Disconnect the radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connector and detach the wiring harness
from the stud bolts.
4. Remove the nut and the radio ignition interference capacitor.
5. Remove the 2 nuts and position the engine control wiring harness shield aside.
6. Remove the 3 bolts, 10 stud bolts and the valve cover.
l Remove and discard the gasket.

INSTALLATION

1. Clean the valve cover, cylinder head and front cover sealing surfaces with a metal surface cleaner and
install a new valve cover gasket.
2. Apply a 5 mm (0.20 in) dot of silicone gasket sealant to the front cover to cylinder head joints.

NOTE: l The valve cover must be installed and the bolts and stud bolts
tightened within four minutes of sealant application.

3. Position the valve cover, install the nuts and tighten the stud bolts.
l Tighten in the sequence shown to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.

4. Position the engine control wiring harness shield and install the 2 nuts.
l Tighten to 6 N.m {0.6 kgf.m, 53 in.lbf}.

5. Install the radio ignition interference capacitor and the nut.


l Tighten to 6 N.m {0.6 kgf.m, 53 in.lbf}.

6. Attach the wiring retainers to the stud bolts and connect the radio interference capacitor electrical
connector.
7. Install the PCV tube.
8. Install the RH ignition coil-on-plugs. See IGNITION COIL-ON-PLUG - 3.0L (4V)

CRANKSHAFT PULLEY - 3.0L (4V) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION


REMOVAL

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See LIFTING .


2. Remove the accessory drive belt. See ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT - 3.0L (4V)
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
3. Use the special tool to hold the crankshaft pulley and remove and discard the crankshaft pulley bolt.

4. Using a 3-Jaw Puller, remove the crankshaft pulley.

INSTALLATION

1. Lubricate the crankshaft front seal with clean engine oil.


2. Apply silicone gasket and sealant to the end of the keyway slot.

NOTE: l Clean the keyway and slot using metal surface cleaner before
applying silicone gasket and sealer.

NOTE: l The crankshaft pulley must be installed and the bolts tightened
within 4 minutes of applying silicone gasket and sealant to the
keyway slot.

3. Using the special tool, install the crankshaft pulley.

NOTE: l Lubricate the outside diameter sealing surface with clean engine oil.

4. Install the bolt and washer. Using the special tool to hold the crankshaft pulley, tighten the bolt in 4
stages:
l Stage 1: Tighten the bolt to 120 N.m {12.2 kgf.m, 89 ft.lbf}.

l Stage 2: Loosen the bolt one full turn.

l Stage 3: Tighten the bolt to 50 N.m {5.1 kgf.m, 37 ft.lbf}.

l Stage 4: Tighten the bolt an additional 90 degrees.

5. Install the accessory drive belt. See ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT - 3.0L (4V)

REMOVAL

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it in a hoist. See LIFTING

3. Using the special tool, remove and discard the crankshaft front seal.

INSTALLATION

1. Apply clean engine oil to the seal lip and seal bore before installing the seal.

NOTE: l Clean all sealing surfaces with metal surface cleaner,

3. Install the crankshaft pulley. See CRANKSHAFT PULLEY - 3.0L (4V)


REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .

FLEXPLATE - 3.0L (4V) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION


1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See LIFTING .
2. Remove the transaxle. See TRANSAXLE - 3.0L (4V) REMOVAL or TRANSAXLE - 3.0L (4V)
INSTALLATION
3. Remove the bolts and the flexplate.
l To install, tighten to 80 N.m {8.1 kgf.m, 59 ft.lbf}

4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

CRANKSHAFT REAR SEAL - 3.0L (4V) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION


REMOVAL

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See LIFTING .


2. Remove the flexplate. See FLEXPLATE - 3.0L (4V) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
3. Using the special tools, remove and discard the crankshaft rear oil seal.

INSTALLATION

1. Using the special tools, install the crankshaft rear oil seal.

NOTE: l Clean all sealing surfaces with metal surface cleaner.

NOTE: l Lubricate the crankshaft rear oil lips with clean engine oil.

REMOVAL

CAUTION: l During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important.


Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning
gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the
oil pan, can cause engine failure.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See LIFTING .


2. Release the fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. See BATTERY DISCONNECT .
4. Remove the crankshaft front oil seal. See CRANKSHAFT FRONT SEAL - 3.0L (4V)
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
5. Remove the generator bolt and the 2 nuts.

6. Remove the stud and position the generator away from the engine.

10. Remove the 3 RH accessory drive belt idler pulley and bracket bolts.
l Detach the wiring harness retainer and remove the idler pulley assembly.

11. Detach the wiring harness retainer, remove the nut and the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector
bracket.
12. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
13. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
14. Remove the LH and RH valve covers. See VALVE COVER - LH, 3.0L (4V)
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION and VALVE COVER - RH, 3.0L (4V)
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
15. Remove the engine support insulator. See ENGINE SUPPORT INSULATORS - FRONT, RH - 3.0L
(4V) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
16. Disconnect the A/C pressure switch electrical connector.
17. Detach the 2 wiring harness retainers from the speed control actuator mounting studs.
18. Remove the 3 nuts and position the speed control actuator aside.
19. Remove the 2 oil pan-to-front cover bolts.
20. Remove the 14 bolts, 2 stud bolts and the engine front cover.
21. Remove and discard the gaskets.

INSTALLATION

1. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of sealant.


l Clean all sealing surfaces with metal surface cleaner and install new gaskets.

CAUTION: l Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs
or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These
tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.

CAUTION: l Do not damage the oil pan gasket while cleaning the sealant
from the lower cylinder block-to-oil pan joint.

2. Apply a 6 mm (0.23 in) diameter dot of silicone gasket and sealer to the cylinder block, lower cylinder

block, cylinder head and oil pan mating surfaces.

NOTE: l The engine front cover must be installed and the bolts tightened
within 4 minutes of applying sealant.

3. Position the engine front cover and install the bolts. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to 25 N.m
{2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.

4. Install the 2 oil pan-to-front cover bolts.


l Tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.

5. Remove the oil pan plug, drain the engine oil.


l Install the plug and tighten to 26 N.m {2.7 kgf.m, 19 ft.lbf}.

6. Install the speed control actuator and 3 nuts.


l To install, tighten to 9 N.m {0.9 kgf.m, 80 in.lbf}.

7. Attach the 2 wiring harness retainers to the speed control actuator mounting studs.
8. Connect the A/C pressure switch electrical connector.
9. Install the engine support insulator. See ENGINE SUPPORT INSULATORS - FRONT, RH - 3.0L
(4V) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
10. Install the RH and LH valve covers. See VALVE COVER - LH, 3.0L (4V)
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION and VALVE COVER - RH, 3.0L (4V)
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
11. Connect the CMP sensor electrical connector.
12. Connect the CKP electrical connector.
13. Install the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector bracket and the nut.
l Tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.

l Attach the wiring harness retainer.

14. Install the RH accessory drive belt idler pulley and bracket and attach the wiring harness retainer.
l Install the 3 bolts and tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.

15. Install the center accessory drive belt idler pulley.


l Tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.

16. Install the LH accessory drive belt idler pulley.


l Tighten to 47 N.m {4.8 kgf.m, 35 ft.lbf}.

17. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner and the bolt.
l Tighten to 45 N.m {4.6 kgf.m, 33 ft.lbf}.

18. Position the generator and install the stud.


l Tighten to 8 N.m {0.8 kgf.m, 71 in.lbf}.

19. Install the generator bolt and 2 nuts.


l Tighten to 47 N.m {4.8 kgf.m, 35 ft.lbf}.

20. Install the crankshaft front oil seal. See CRANKSHAFT FRONT SEAL - 3.0L (4V)
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
21. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
22. Connect the negative battery cable. See BATTERY DISCONNECT .

TIMING DRIVE COMPONENTS - 3.0L (4V) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

CAUTION: l Failure to verify correct timing drive component alignment will result
in severe engine damage.

2. Remove the ignition pulse wheel.

NOTE: l This pulse wheel is used in several different engines. Install the pulse
wheel with the key-way in the slot stamped "30" or "30RFF" (orange
in color).

3. Install the crankshaft pulley bolt.

4. Remove the LH and RH spark plugs. See SPARK PLUGS - 3.0L (4V)
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
5. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to position the crankshaft keyway in the 11 o'clock position and position
the camshafts in the correct position. This will position the number one cylinder at top dead center
(TDC).
l Verify that the camshafts are correctly located. If not, rotate the crankshaft one additional turn and
re-check.

2. Position the chain tensioner in a soft-jawed vise.

4. Slowly compress the timing chain tensioner.

CAUTION: l During tensioner compression, do not release the ratchet stem


until the tensioner piston is fully bottomed in its bore or damage
to the ratchet stem will result.

5. Retain the tensioner piston with a 1.5 mm (0.06 in) wire or paper clip.

6. If timing marks on the timing chains are not evident, use a permanent-type marker to mark the crankshaft
and camshaft timing marks on the LH and RH timing chains.
1. Mark any link to use as the crankshaft timing mark.
2. Starting with the crankshaft timing mark, count 29 links and mark the link.
3. Continue counting to 42 and mark the link.

1. Remove the water pump belt. See WATER PUMP BELT - 3.0L (4V) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
2. Remove the timing drive components. See TIMING DRIVE COMPONENTS - 3.0L (4V)

3. Using the special tools, remove the water pump pulley.

NOTE: l The original equipment manufacturer (OEM) pulley is pressed on


flush to the end of the camshaft. The service pulley is pressed on
flush to the end of the camshaft.

4. Using the special tools, remove and discard the camshaft oil seal.

CAUTION: l Do not scratch the camshaft sealing surface while removing the
camshaft oil seal. If scratched, camshaft oil seal leakage may
occur.

5. Remove the 2 bolts and the camshaft oil seal retainer.

l Discard the press-in-place gasket.

6. Loosen the bolts evenly in the sequence shown.


1. Remove the camshaft bearing thrust caps (Hand 6L).
2. Remove the remaining camshaft bearing caps.
3. Remove the camshafts from the cylinder head.

CAUTION: l Cylinder head camshaft bearing caps are numbered to verify


that they are assembled in their original positions. If the
numbers cannot be seen, mark the camshaft bearing caps prior
to removing them. If not reassembled in their original positions,
severe engine damage may occur.

CAUTION: l After loosening all of the camshaft bearing cap bolts, remove
the camshaft bearing thrust caps (1L and 6L) first, or damage to
the thrust caps may occur.

CAUTION: l The camshaft caps must be installed in their original positions


or damage to the engine may occur.

CAUTION: l Do not install the camshaft journal bearing thrust caps until all
of the camshaft bearing caps have been installed, or damage to
the thrust caps may occur.

3. Lubricate the bearing surfaces of the camshaft bearing thrust caps with clean engine oil and install the
bearing thrust caps.

CAUTION: l Do not install the camshaft bearing thrust caps until all of the
camshaft bearing caps have been installed, or damage to the

3. Lubricate the bearing surfaces of the camshaft bearing thrust caps with clean engine oil and install the
bearing thrust caps.
l Loosely install the bolts.

4. Install the bolts.


l Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.

5. Install the timing drive components. See TIMING DRIVE COMPONENTS - 3.0L (4V)

1. With the engine in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See FLEXPLATE - 3.0L (4V)
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
2. Remove the LH and RH valve covers. See VALVE COVER - RH, 3.0L (4V)
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION and VALVE COVER - LH, 3.0L (4V)
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .

CAUTION: l Only use hand tools when removing or installing the spark
plugs or damage may occur to the cylinder head or spark plug.

3. Remove the 6 spark plugs.


l To install, tighten to 15 N.m {1.5 kgf.m, 11 ft.lbf}.

4. Remove the RH splash shield.


l To install, tighten to 9 N.m {0.9 kgf.m, 80 in.lbf}.

5. Rotate the crankshaft until the camshaft lobe is pointing directly away from the follower.
6. Using the special tool, remove the followers.

7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.


l Lubricate the camshaft followers with clean engine oil.

HYDRAULIC LASH ADJUSTERS - 3.0L (4V) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION


1. Remove the camshaft roller followers. See CAMSHAFT ROLLER FOLLOWERS - 3.0L (4V)
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
2. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.

NOTE: l Mark the positions of the hydraulic lash adjusters to make sure they
are assembled in their original position.

3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

l Lubricate the hydraulic lash adjusters with clean engine oil.

NOTE: l Inspect the hydraulic lash adjusters for scoring marks and uneven
wear in the bore. Install new lash adjusters if necessary.

VALVE SPRING, RETAINER AND SEAL - 3.0L (4V)


REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
REMOVAL

1. Remove the camshaft roller followers. See CAMSHAFT ROLLER FOLLOWERS - 3.0L (4V)
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
2. Pressurize the cylinder using compressed air.

NOTE: l If air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any
loss of air pressure will allow the valve(s) to fall into the cylinder. A
rubber band, tape or string wrapped around the end of the valve stem
will prevent this from happening.

3. Using the special tool, remove the key, retainer, and valve spring.

4. Remove the valve seal.

7. Remove the LH exhaust manifold. See LH CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND EXHAUST

8. Remove the 4 upper radiator support bracket bolts.
9. Remove the oil level indicator.
10. Remove the stud bolt and remove the oil level indicator tube.
l Remove and discard the O-ring seal.

11. Remove the 3 bolts and position the water pump aside.

14. Inspect all areas of the deck face with a straightedge and feeler gauge. The cylinder head must not have
depressions deeper than 0.0254 mm (0.001 in) across a 38.1 mm (1.5 in) square area, or scratches more
than 0.0254 mm (0.001 in).

NOTE: l The straightedge used must be flat within 0.0051 mm (0.0002 in) per
foot of tool length.

INSTALLATION

1. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.
l Clean all surfaces with metal surface cleaner.

CAUTION: l Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs
or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These
tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.

2. Position a new gasket and the cylinder head.


3. Install the bolts and tighten in 6 stages in the sequence shown.
l Stage 1: Tighten to 40 N.m {4.1 kgf.m, 30 ft.lbf}.

l Stage 2: Tighten bolts 90 degrees.

l Stage 3: Loosen 1 full turn.

l Stage 4: Tighten to 40 N.m {4.1 kgf.m, 30 ft.lbf}.

l Stage 5: Tighten bolts 90 degrees.

l Stage 6: Tighten bolts 90 degrees.

NOTE: l New cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are torque-to-yield
designed and cannot be reused.

4. Position the water pump and install the bolts.


l Tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.

5. Install the oil level indicator tube and stud bolt.


l Tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.

NOTE: l Install a new O-ring seal and lubricate with clean engine oil.

6. Install the oil level indicator.


7. Install the 4 upper radiator support bracket bolts.
l Tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.

8. Install the LH exhaust manifold. See LH CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND EXHAUST

9. Install the hydraulic lash adjusters.

3. Install the special tools.


1. Position the 2 universal adapter brackets on the top of the cylinder block.
2. Install the 2 M8 x 1.25 x 36 mm (1.41 in) bolts and tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.
3. Position the universal lifting bracket onto the 2 universal adapter brackets.
4. Fasten the universal lifting bracket to the 2 universal adapter brackets with a suitable nut and bolt.

4. Using the special tool, lift the engine 12 mm (0.47 in).


5. Remove the nut and ground wire eyelet from the engine support insulator bracket stud.
l To install, tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.

6. Remove the 3 nuts and the engine support insulator bracket.


l To install, tighten to 55 N.m {5.6 kgf.m, 41 ft.lbf}.

7. Remove the 3 bolts and the engine support insulator.


l To install, tighten to 48 N.m {4.9 kgf.m, 41 ft.lbf}.

8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

l Position the driveshaft aside and support with mechanic's wire.

CAUTION: l Do not reuse the driveshaft flange bolts and washers. Install

CAUTION: l Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs
or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surface. These
tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use
a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of sealant.

60. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to position the crankshaft keyway in the 11 o'clock position and position
the camshafts in the correct position. This will position the No. 1 cylinder at top dead center (TDC).

recheck.

76. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.

CAUTION: l The hydraulic lash adjusters must be installed in their original

than 0.0254 mm (0.001 in).

CAUTION: l During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important.


Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning
gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or
the oil pan, may cause engine failure.

CAUTION: l If the oil pan during engine disassembly, it must be installed after the
engine and transaxle are assembled and the transaxle-to-engine
bolts are installed. Failure to follow this assembly sequence can
result in oil leaks.

1. If removed, install the crankshaft key into the keyway on the crankshaft.

2. Install the crankcase cover, a new gasket and the bolts.


l To install, tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.

shown in 6 stages.

l Stage 2: Tighten 90 N.m {9.2 kgf.m, 66 ft.lbf}.

l Stage 3: Loosen one full turn.

l Stage 4: Tighten to 40 N.m {4.1 kgf.m, 30 ft.lbf}.

l Stage 5: Tighten 90 degrees.

l Stage 6: Tighten 90 degrees.

21. Hold the chain tensioner ratchet lock mechanism away from the ratchet stem with a small pick.

3. Continue counting to link 42 and mark the link.

1. There should be 12 chain links between the camshaft timing marks.
2. There should be 27 chain links between the camshaft and the crankshaft timing marks.
3. There should be 30 chain links between the camshaft and the crankshaft timing marks.

CAUTION: l Failure to verify correct timing drive component alignment will


result in severe engine damage.

35. Install the ignition pulse wheel.

CAUTION: l This pulse wheel is used in several different engines. Install the
pulse wheel with the keyway in the slot stamped "30" or
"30RFF" only (orange in color).

36. Install 3 new gaskets in the front cover.


37. Apply a 6 mm (0.24 in) dot of silicone gasket and sealant to the cylinder block to lower cylinder block
and cylinder head mating surfaces.

NOTE: l Clean and degrease the sealing surfaces with metal parts cleaner
before applying gasket and sealant.

NOTE: l The front cover must be installed and bolts tightened within 4
minutes of sealant application.

l The crankshaft pulley must be installed and the bolt tightened within
4 minutes of sealant application.

58. Install the water pump belt on the water pump pulley and position it on the camshaft pulley.

59. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to seat the water pump belt on the camshaft pulley.

CAUTION: l Do not use any screwdrivers, pliers or other metal objects that
could cause damage to the belt or camshaft pulley while

60. Lubricate the O-ring seal and install the oil filter.
l Tighten to 5 N.m {0.5 kgf.m, 44 in.lbf} and then rotate an additional 180 degrees.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: l If the oil pan was removed during engine disassembly, it must be
installed after the engine and transaxle are assembled and the
transaxle-to-engine bolts are installed. Failure to follow this assembly
sequence can result in engine oil leaks.

1. Using the special tools, align the engine with the transaxle.

24. Apply a 10 mm (0.39 in) dot of silicone gasket and sealant to the front cover-to-cylinder block sealing
surface.

NOTE: l Clean and degrease all sealing surfaces with metal surface cleaner.

NOTE: l The oil pan must installed and the bolts tightened within 4 minutes of
the sealant application.

43. Position the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube and loosely install the fittings.
l Tighten the EGR tube-to-EGR valve fitting to 40 N.m {4.0 kgf.m, 30 ft.lbf}.

64. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise and install the accessory drive belt.
