This module serves as an Alternative Delivery Mode in the learning process for this
School Year 2019 – 2020 to support the Continuity Plan of the Department of Education
amid the present pandemic due to covid19. The main purpose of this learning material
facilitates the learners in enhancing the intellectual skills and awareness in
understanding and applications of the field of Social Sciences in the real world through
accomplishing the different tasks or activities.

This module fascinates the learners to discover a significant knowledge in the
Discipline and Ideas in the Applied Social Sciences that they can use on how to respond
in the real-life situations such as in solving the problem they encountered in our society.
The learning process in this module provides clear instructions and executes a series of
different tasks or activities to attain significant learnings in the subject. As the learners
go through in this module, they can enhance and explore their learning skills by
performing the given activities to understand and realize the significance of the field of
Social Sciences in their lives.
INTRODUCTION

Senior High School is the last stage of the Philippine Basic Education System and
preparation for curriculum exits- higher education, employment, or entrepreneurship. As
you go along in this journey, as a learner you will encounter various subjects that broaden
your interests, develop your learning skills, and improve your cognitive capabilities as
these subjects will equip you with the necessary skills and competencies that will prepare
you in facing your future. One of those subjects focuses on discipline and ideas in the
applied social sciences. Under this subject, you will encounter topics and activities that
challenge how you can use the different fields of social sciences in understanding the
different circumstances and settings that happened in our society.

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:

The Definition of Social Sciences


Social Sciences are academic disciplines concerned with the systematic study of
social phenomena. It investigates and examines the behavior of humans on how they
respond to the changing patterns of society. In a broader sense, it is a branch of science
that examines the structures and institutions, the functions of human society, and the
interpersonal relationships of the group of individuals within the community.

The Disciplines of Social Sciences


The different disciplines of social sciences are the following:

1. Anthropology – the study of humans and their cultures in the past and present
time. It understands the complexity of cultures across all of human history.
2. History – the systematic study of human past events to understand the meaning,
dynamics, and relationship of the causes and effects of events in the development
of societies.
3. Economics – studies the allocation of scarce resources and the production and
exchange of goods and services in society.
4. Geography – a study of the interaction between people and their environments
5. Demography – the scientific study of human populations across time. It examines
the changes in population growth through the analysis of statistics on birth, human
movement and morbidity, agedness, and mortality.
6. Sociology – systematic study of people’s behavior in a group.
7. Psychology - studies how the human mind works in consonance with the body to
produce thoughts that lead to individual actions. Analyzes how people and groups
experience the world through various emotions.
8. Political Science – primarily studies human behavior concerning political
systems, governments, laws, and international relations. It examines the
relationship between people and policy at all levels from the individual to the
national and international levels.
9. Linguistics – the scientific study of language.
The Definition of Applied Social Sciences
Applied Social Sciences is the study on how to improve the daily life of the
individuals, groups of individuals, and communities or society by integrating the concepts,
methods, and theories of the discipline of social sciences. It aims to provide more
comprehensive different premises, perspectives, and practices from the different social
disciplines to understand and resolve the problems and issues that arise from society.

The Disciplines of Applied Social Sciences


1. Counselling – it is a professional relationship between the professionally
trained counselor and the individual or group of individuals that undergo a
systematic process to help the individuals and group of individuals to undertake
good mental conditions, wellness, educations, and career goals. It is also a
process to help the person to improve the proper way of behavior, thinking, and
feelings.
2. Social Work – Various professional activities or methods concretely concerned
with providing social services and especially with the investigation, treatment,
and material aid of the economically, physically, mentally, or socially
disadvantaged.
3. Communications – deals with how humans use verbal and non-verbal
messages to create meaning in various contexts.
