PEKING OPERA FACE PAINTING / KOREAN MASKS

LET US KNOW

In East Asia, paintings is one of their highest form of arts. They used
different materials as canvas for their painting. In theatrical performances,
they wear mask or paint their faces like in Kabuki of Japan, Peking Opera of
China and Korea.

As we move along, we will have further discussion about face painting


in Peking Opera and Korean masks. We will learn the meaning of colors in
their face painting and masks making.

LET US REVIEW

Let us recall, what is the meaning of the following colors in Kabuki of


Japan.

1. dark red 2. black

3. purple

4. dark blue
5. light green

LET US STUDY

Performers from Kabuki of Japan and Peking Opera of China usually


paint their faces depending on the character they are portraying. While in
Korean theatrical performances, they wear masks.

Peking opera, or Beijing
opera is the most dominant form
of Chinese opera which combines
music, vocal performance, mime,
dance and acrobatics. It originated
in Beijing, China in the middle of
Qing dynasty (1636–1912) and
became fully developed and
recognized in the middle of 19th
century.

with different colors in relation with
the personification of character being portrayed and historical assessment.
Hero type characters are normally painted in simple colors, while enemies,
bandits, rebels and others have more complicated designs on their faces.
Jingiu Lianpu is a traditional way of make-up in Chinese operas and
Lianpu is called the face mask.

MEANING OF COLORS FOR FACE PAINTING:

Guan Ju - Red indicates devotion, courage,


bravery, uprightness and loyalty.

Huang Pang - Yellow signifies fierceness,


ambition and cool-headedness.

Zhu Wen - A green face tells the audience that the
character is not only impulsive and violent, he
also lacks self-restraint.

Zhang Fei - Black symbolizes roughness and


fierceness. The black face indicates either a rough
and bold character or an impartial and selfless
personality.

Lian Po - Purple stands for uprightness and cool-


headedness. While a reddish purple face indicates
a just and noble character.

Cao Cao - white suggests treachery, suspiciousness


and craftiness. It is common to see the white face of
the powerful villain on stage.

Jiang Gan - The clown or chou in Chinese Opera
has special makeup patterns called xiaohualian
(the petty painted face). Sometimes a small patch of
chalk is painted around the nose to show a mean
and secretive character. At times, the xiaohualian is
also painted on a young page or jesting to enliven
up the performance.

Note: Gold and silver colors are usually used for gods and spirits.

KOREAN MASKS

Korean masks, also known as tal or t'al, introduced with religious


meaning which also have religious or artistic influence. Korea has a rich
history of masks. They use it in funeral services to help extradite evil spirits,
in theatre plays dating back to the prehistoric age, and also used for
shamanistic rites and were kept within temples where they were honored
with offerings.

The roles of colors in Korean masks:


1. Black, Red and White – Bright and vibrant colors that help establish the
age and race of the figure
2. Half Red and Half White mask - symbolize the idea that the wearer has
two fathers, Mr. Red and Mr. White
3. Dark-faced mask - indicates that the character was born of an adulterous

mother

Some masks have moving parts like winking or shifting eyes and
moving mouths. To further add to the lifelike features of the masks, black
fabric is draped from the top of the mask over the wearer's head to simulate
hair.

LET US REMEMBER

The performers in China usually paint their faces depending on the


character they are portraying. Peking Opera, also known as Beijing Opera
or Jingju Lianpu. Originally, Lianpu is called false mask.

Korean don’t paint faces, instead uses mask in their performances.


Korean masks is called “tal or t’al”. By the 12 th century, their masks
became part of dances and dramas.

Peking opera and Korean masks uses different colors in their face
painting and masks wherein each colors have a meaning.
