The Meaning and Usage of In, On, At


A. As Preposition of Time
a) In
In is preposition of time that used for period time. It used for :
 Parts of the day (in the morning/afternoon/evening)
 Months (in February/January/March/etc.)
 Years (in 2002)
 Seasons (in the summer)
 Long period time ( in twentieth century, in five minutes)

Example sentences :
1. He left the house in the morning to work in his friend’s famous company.
2. As we know, in the first decade of 20th century movies grew much better and
developed into the one of impotant tools comunication.
3. Dania hopes that he can come to New York in this winter.
b) On
On is the preposition of time for describing specific time. Commonly it used with
days of the week, parts of the week, dates, and special dates..
Example sentences :
1. I have got to go to New York on Sunday.
2. Please don’t worry dude, I’ll come on time on your wedding day.
3. My mom and I decided to move into that house on 18 January 2019.
c) At
At is preposition of time for describing very specific time like specific clock times,
specific times of the day (just for night time), particular points in the day and special
celebrations.
Example sentences :
1. Reino studies at night and sleeps after that.
2. Many people will exchange their red packets at Chinese New Year’s Day.
3. Bye Sam, I’ll see you at seven o’clock.
So it can be concluded that the difference between on, in, at is in its specificty. On
indicates a more specific time in comparison to the preposition in. And at indicates a
more specific time than on.

B. As Preposition of Place
a) In
In is the preposition of place that tell us the noun is in an enclose space, surrounded or
closed off on all sides. It used to talk about locations within a larger area and about
workplaces (physical location).
Example sentences :
1. I think there’s something strange in this room.
2. Danu found his phone in Saras’s class.
3. I have always wanted to work in the big company.
b) On
On is the preposition of place that tell us the following noun is located on a suurface.
Ans we can use on when one thing is attached to or touching something. On also can
used to talk about a floor in a building and to talk about physically on public
transport.
Example sentences :
1. Oh no! I left my wallet on the bus.
2. My appartment is on the 10th floor.
3. I put my bag on the table.
c) At
At is the prepositon of place that tell us about the following noun is located at a
specific point or locations, and it shows an exact position.
Example sentences :
1. I am waiting at the entrance.
2. I work at Mandiri Bank
3. I always sitting in this room at that sofa.

So it can be concluded that the difference between on, in, at is in its specificty. On
indicates a more specific locations in comparison to the preposition in. And at indicates a
more specific location than on.
