HYDRANTS & HOSE
DRY BARREL HYDRANTS
Hydrants are aboveground extensions of underground water mains, equipped with valves and/or connections for
attaching fire hose. On FM Approved models, the pressure containing parts are usually made of cast iron or ductile
iron. The valve seat, valve guide and other important working parts are usually made of bronze. A weather cap on
the operating stem nut prevents the accumulation of ice, which would cause the hydrant to bind. Hose nipples are
threaded, leaded and pinned, or twist-locked and set-screwed into the hydrant upper body.
The valve is opened or closed by a 15 in. (380 mm) long wrench fitted onto the operating stem nut. To prevent
freezing, any water in the hydrant barrel drains out at the bottom through a small valve which opens simultaneously
as the hydrant is shut down after use.
The name of the manufacturer and the year of manufacture are cast on the barrel, as well as the working pressure
and the depth of bury line. On the bonnet, an arrow and the word ‘‘open’’ show the direction for opening the hydrant.
The counterclockwise direction to open is required. Hydrants with pumper connections are not recommended for
installation within plant yards.
Plans for installation of hydrants should be forwarded to your insurance company for review prior to installation.
In particular, plans should be submitted if the hose and/or outlet connections are different from those listed below.
FM Approved hydrants can usually be obtained with standardized mechanical joint inlet or flanged inlet
connections. Other types of inlet connection are mentioned in the specific manufacturer’s listings. Hydrants should
be anchored in accordance with FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheet 3-10 or equal.
Standard outlets are for 2 1⁄2 in. (64 mm ) hose size. Hydrants can be obtained with independent hose gate valves.
Hydrant sizes shown are the inside diameter of the main hydrant valve. Unless otherwise noted in the listing, the
hydrants have 175 psi (1205 kPa) rated working pressure.
Some hydrants, referred to as traffic types, have intentional sections of weakness near the ground line which
fracture readily when struck with sufficient force by a moving motor vehicle. They are used to minimize damage to
the main hydrant valve and simplify repairs.
Unless otherwise specified, the standard FM Approved hydrant inlet connection is 6 in. NPS.

the same as that for a sprinkler system.

FIRE HOSE
For ordinary outdoor service, woven single jacket, lined fire hose is recommended. If yard surfaces are rough and
will cause heavy wear, or if water pressures are over 150 psi (1035 kPa), double jacket hose is advised. Hose that
may come in contact with acid, acid fumes or other corrosive materials should be covered. If the hose must be stored
in a damp location, it should be treated for protection against mildew unless the jacket is woven entirely of synthetic
fibers.
For indoor service, lightweight single jacket, lined hose or linen hose is most often used. The lining of the
lightweight hose is thin enough so that the hose can be mounted on the semiautomatic pin type hose racks and laid
out without jamming. The conventional fire hose for outdoor use cannot be mounted on these racks due to its heavier
lining. This hose will jam the racks.
Lightweight, double jacket, thin-lined fire hose is designed for use on rough surfaces where weight is a prime
consideration, such as forestry use or use in backpacks in high rise buildings. It may also have some use as a rack
hose in manufacturing areas such as foundries, steel mills, etc. This type of fire hose is not a substitute for
conventional double jacket hose where service demands are high and weight is of secondary importance.
Some listings specify a service test pressure. Service test pressure is that pressure to which a hose should be
periodically subjected to determine its suitability for continued service. The service test pressure is at least 10%
greater than the normal operating pressure.
Alternatively, some hoses listed state ‘‘Tested To XXX.’’ This refers to the manufacturer’s proof pressure, which is
two times the service test pressure. If no test pressure is shown, the test pressure is 300 psi (2070 kPa) for single
jacket hose and 400 psi (2760 kPa) for double jacket hose.

HOSE HOUSES
Standard designs of hose houses provide well-protected shelters for hose and equipment at various points in a
plant yard. They are usually placed at hydrants and should be located to permit easy attachment of hose to each
outlet.
The individual hose house should be equipped according to the expected needs of the area protected by the
hydrant and equipment.
The need may be for all 11⁄2 in. (38 mm) hose, all 21⁄2 in. (64 mm) hose or some of each. The lengths of either 11⁄2
or 21⁄2 in. (38 or 64 mm) hose depend on the distance to the farthest hazard.

HOSE CABINETS
Cabinets are suitable where space is limited or where the usual hose house would not be desirable for other
reasons. Those of conventional design can be either attached to a building wall or placed on iron pipe legs or on a
concrete foundation near any hydrant. Usually the cabinet will hold 250 ft (76 m) of 21⁄2 in. (64 mm) hose, together
with nozzles, spanners and other accessories. The size and design may be varied to accommodate the type and
amount of equipment selected as most suitable. Special designs are available to suit specific locations. Any deviation
from conventional design is clearly noted in the particular listing.

HOSE RACKS AND WALL CABINETS
Hose racks of several types are available for 11⁄2 and 21⁄2 in. (38 and 64 mm) linen and lightweight woven-jacketed,
lined hose. Only these two types of hose should be used. The conventional fire hose for outdoor use is too thick and
may jam the racks. Smaller hose should be limited to light hazard occupancies.
It is preferable to fasten racks to a wall or clamp them to sprinkler system risers. It is not desirable to suspend them
on nipples smaller than 2 in. (51 mm), except in hose cabinets where the supply pipe is rigidly supported at the hose
valve.

FIRE HOSE REELS
Fire hose reels are available in two types. Continuous-flow type is designed for hard rubber hose and will deliver
full flow regardless of the length of hose unreeled. Semiautomatic type is designed for use with woven-jacket lined
or unlined hose and must be fully deployed from the reel for use. This latter type reel is equipped with a water stop
to permit one man operation and to prevent jamming due to water pressure before the hose is fully deployed.

FIRE CART HOUSES
A fire cart house provides a well-protected shelter for one or more mobile fire hose carts.
A fire hose cart is usually a hose reel on wheels. The wheel axle also serves as axle for the reel. Or, the cart can
be a wheeled trailer with the hose coiled or folded on the platform. It can be pulled to where the hose is needed.

HOSE STATION CONTROLS
A remote control hose valve station is designed for unheated areas such as warehouses, open platforms or other
locations where freezing might occur if the piping were kept filled with water. The water supply is controlled by a
deluge valve in a heated area.
The hose station consists of a tripping device housed in a break-glass type box mounted near the hose. Breaking
of the glass with the hammer provided releases a spring-loaded rubber diaphragm which exerts air pressure through
a copper tube to operate the deluge valve. The hose is then put into use by opening the valve in the usual way.
In another arrangement, the tripping device is a part of the hose valve and is operated automatically when the
handwheel of the valve is opened manually.
Any wet standpipe installation can be converted to a dry standpipe with a remote control hose valve station and
a deluge valve.

HOSE COUPLINGS
A FM Approved hose-coupling set has one male and one female threaded part, each to be attached to opposite
hose ends. Standard sizes are 11⁄2 and 21⁄2 in. (38 and 64 mm). They are available for single, double and covered
woven-jacketed lined hose, and for unlined linen hose. The 11⁄2 in. (38 mm) size is obtainable for replacement
purposes only.
Because American National coupling threads have not been adopted by all states and cities, coupling threads
must be specified when ordering couplings or coupled hose.
All 21⁄2 in. (64 mm) couplings have pin lugs, rocker lug, or slots; spanner wrenches are used to make a tight joint.
If more than one type of coupling is used in one plant, provide spanners to fit each type.
FM Approved couplings are expansion ring type unless noted otherwise.

PLAYPIPES
Before the introduction of spray nozzles, playpipes were the only nozzles used with 21⁄2 in. (64 mm) fire hose for
industrial fire fighting. Playpipes are now primarily used as water measuring devices during water testing.
One type has a 30 in. (760 mm) barrel and is known as the standard underwriter playpipe. The other type has a
15 in. (381 mm) barrel and is known as the short playpipe.
The detachable tip for the barrel has a 11⁄8 in. (29 mm) orifice. Swivel handles provide a good handgrip for two
persons.
The short playpipe, when used for fire fighting, usually has a detachable 1 in. (25 mm) shutoff tip.

FIRE HOSE NOZZLES, Water-Spray
Portable water-spray nozzles are manual firefighting devices usually provided to supplement automatic firefighting
equipment. They are suitable for use on fires in ordinary combustibles, in flammable liquids with flashpoints above
150°F (66°C) either spilled or in open tanks, and in oil-filled electrical equipment.
The three kinds of fires and the types of nozzle FM Approved for them are:
A. Ordinary Combustibles. While any spray nozzle listed is to some extent suitable for use on fires in ordinary
combustibles, those with narrow angle discharge are FM Approved because of their effective range.
B. Flammable Liquids with Flashpoints above 150°F (66°C). Nozzles FM Approved for use on fires in flammable
liquids with flashpoints above 150°F (66°C) in open tanks produce a cone angle discharge not less than 120°. To
permit close approach for maximum effectiveness, they must be equipped with 6 through 12 ft (1.8 through 3.7 m)
lightweight applicators.
FM Approved nozzles discharging a narrow angle (30°-90°) high-velocity spray are effective for controlling
flammable liquid spill fires, fires in open tanks containing flammable liquids with flashpoints above 200°F (93°C) and
for cooling closed containers exposed to heat. They are generally not suitable for extinguishing fires in lower
flashpoint flammable liquids in open tanks or pans.
C. Electrical Equipment. Nozzles FM Approved for use on fires in electrical equipment produce a long-range,
narrow angle (30°-90°) high-velocity spray only. They are suitable for use on fires in oil-filled electrical equipment,
such as small transformers and oil switches, at voltages up to 250,000 when used at a distance of not less than 8 ft
(2.4 m). Electrical equipment should be de-energized, if possible, before anyone attempts to extinguish a fire in or
near it.
Nozzles producing a solid stream or those employing applicators are not suited for this type of fire.
Explanation of listings. Hose threads are national standard unless otherwise indicated. Discharge and discharge
angle are shown for 50 psi (345 kPa) pressure.
FM Approval designations are as follows:
A. Fires in ordinary combustibles.
B1. Fires in flammable liquids with flashpoint above 150°F (66°C) in open tanks.
B2. Fires in flammable liquids with flashpoint above 200°F (93°C) in open tanks, and for all spill fires.
C. Fires in electrical equipment.
Main suitability is listed first. Secondary suitability is given in parentheses. While all nozzles to some extent are
useful on fires in ordinary combustibles, the A designation is affixed below only to those primarily intended for this
class of fire.

200 psi (13.8 Bar) for use with 21⁄2 inch (65 mm) nominal size fixed monitors.

Style 5098 AC Conquest. Automatic baffle type, 500 to 2000 gpm (1893 to 7571 L/min) with a rated service pressure of 200 psi (13.8 Bar)
for use with the Style 3678 AC Conquest Remote Controlled Monitor System.
Note: The Styles 2197, 2198, 5097 and 5098 AC Conquest master stream nozzles are provided with Class I, Division 2, Groups C and D Temperature Class T3C
Hazardous (Classified) Locations, outdoors Type 4X with 1/30 HP motor drives for use with the Style 3678 AC Conquest Remote Controlled Monitor Systems which
allows positioning of the nozzle from remote locations.
