CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Facebook are currently being used regularly by millions

of students. People discovered that the facebook could be used
toconnectwithotherpeople,whetherforbusinessorcommercial
purpose, make new friends, find old friends and long lost
relatives.Theuseoffacebook hasbeenwidespreadthattheyhave
notonlycaughttheattentionofacademicandindustryresearchers
worldwide but also us. Facebook have only one common goal. It
is to encourage new ways to communicate and share information.

Social networking sites, most notably Facebook have become

sopopulartodaythattheyareleadingwordsonthelipsofevery
student.YoulovetospendmostofyourtimecheckingyourFacebook
updates, but do you know that there are many negative effects
of using Facebook?

Mostofthestudentsdon'trealizethenegativeeffectsimpacts
of Facebook on their life. And, the main reason is because they
arealreadyaddictedtoit.And,thisaddictioncanleadtoseveral
negative developments.

The main purpose of this paper is to suggest some ways of

minimizing the bad impacts of Facebook to students and to show
you the negative effects of these social networking sites on
students'behaviorandperformance,especiallyintheacademics
of the ICT students in Carlos F. Gonzales High School.

Even though Facebook is now used by a much wider variety of

users, students are still its “biggest fans”. Results from a
recent paper Ellison et al. (2007) reported that 94% of College
studentsareactiveFacebookusers,spending60-90minutesonline
eachdaycommunicatingwiththeirFriendsListof150–200people.
Similarly,WileyandSisson(2006;ascitedinPempeketal,2009)
conducted a large survey on college students from universities
in the developing countries indicated that 91% of students use
the Facebook. Ethiopia is also as one of developing countries
hasintoxicatedwitharoundonemillionusersofFacebookinwhich
half of them are higher education students (Kassashow, 2012)

The target population for this research was defined as the

studentswhoformthemajorchunkofusersoffacebook.Thiswas
done to have a better insight into the research as the target
populationwasoneofthemostavidusersofthesesitesandcould
provide exceptional responses. Even the understanding of the
questionnaire was easy for them as they were familiar with
facebook and are quite clear about the reasons they use it for
andthevariousproblemsthattheynowfacebecauseoftheeffects
of using facebook.
Many students always log in to their account on facebook as
a part of their everyday routine. Could you imagine the number
ofallthestudentsloggingintothesesocialnetworkingsites,
everyday?Thatwouldbemillionsofstudentslogging.That’swhy
manystudentshavebeenblamingvarioussocialnetworkingsites
for their steady decrease in grade point averages. That’s why
we look into facebook and why they affect fellow students’
academic performances.
This research also focused on finding ways to enhance
students'motivationandimprovetheirachievements,yetwithout
lookingcloselyatthesourcesfortheirdismotivationoracademic

Background of study

FacebookisasocialnetworkingservicelaunchedinFebruary
2004,ownedandoperatedbyFacebook,Inc.AsofSeptember2012,
Facebook has over one billion active users, more than half of
themusingFacebookonamobiledevice.Usersmustregisterbefore
using the site, after which they may create a personal profile,
add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including
automatic notifications when they update their profile.
Additionally, users may join common-interest user groups,
organized by workplace, school or college, or other
characteristics, and categorize their friends into lists such
as "People From Work" or "Close Friends".

Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college

roommates' and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo
Saverin,AndrewMcCollum,DustinMoskovitzandChrisHughes.The
website's membership was initially limited by the founders to
Harvardstudents,butwasexpandedtoothercollegesintheBoston
area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University.

It gradually added support for students at 5 various other

universities before opening to high school students, and
eventuallytoanyoneaged13andover.InMay2005,Accelpartners
invested $12.7 million in Facebook, and Jim Breyer added $1
million of his own money to the pot. According to a May 2011
Consumer Reports survey, there are 7.5 million children under
13 with accounts and 5 million under 10, violating the site's
terms of service. Facebook is beneficial to one's social life
becausetheycancontinuouslystayincontactwiththeirfriends
and relatives, while others say that it can cause increased
antisocial tendencies because people are not directly
communicatingwitheachother.ButsomearguethatFacebookhas
affectedthesociallifeandactivityofpeopleinvariousways.
With its availability on many mobile devices, Facebook allows
userstocontinuouslystayintouchwithfriends,relativesand
other acquaintances wherever they are in the world, as long as
there is access to the Internet. It can also unite people with
commoninterestsand/orbeliefsthroughgroupsandotherpages,
and has been known to reunite lost family members and friends
because of the widespread reach of its network.

Facebook also continues to prompt debate about users'

behaviors. The effects of online activities on themselves and
theirinteractionswithothershavebeendiscussedextensively.
In particular, students are a main class of Facebook users who
spendlonghoursonthesocialnetwork,whichhasworriedparents
and educational authorities about their academic performance.
The students themselves argue that their presence on Facebook,
as a leisure activity, does not hinder their academic efforts,
though some evidence suggests that their grades decline after
they join Facebook.

positive effects, but they also have their share of negative

asked a few questions about their usage of Facebook and on how
it has affected their academic performances. To ensure honesty
of their answers, the survey questions asked to them were
anonymous and confidential and will not be used against than in

This study will be of benefit to the following:

and assess the students' profile, behaviour and academic
performances especially those who have access to
technological/electronic devices that can link to social media

This will lead to results that are poor and decrease the

suggests, that students must be encouraged to use social

Method of research
The impact of Facebook to the academic performance of ICT
students of Carlos F Gonzales high school is quantitative type
of research or an objective systematic empirical investigation
of observation of observable phenomenon through the use of
computational techniques. It highlights numerical analysis of
data hoping to provide unbiased results.

Research Design
It uses the most applicable quantitative type of research
design the non-Experimental and this design may also called as
descriptive research design. It’s main purpose is to observe
describe, and document aspects of a situation as it naturally
occursandsometimestoserveasastartingpointforhypothesis

information needed for the study.
Asthestudyprogresses,theresearcherswillbeemployingthe

Sampling Technique

a fairly equal representation of the variables for the study.
The stratification was based on Carlos F Gonzales high school
among ICT students. The proportionate stratification random
sampling technique was employed to select 40 students in ICT

that facebook has impact to ICT students’ academic performance
that the researchers aimed to distinguish.

Statistical treatment of the study
