Match each Term on the left with the best Descriptor on the right. Each Descriptor may be used only once.
Choose the correct letter. (12pts)
Term Descriptor

C. Mass A. Anything that has mass and volume

D. Solid B. Amount of space an object takes up

E. Gas C. Amount of matter in an object

A. Matter
D. E. F.
F. Liquid

B. Volume

Use your knowledge to explain the following statements: (3pts each)

(a) Solids have a definite shape because the particles were tightly packed together and they can not move freely
so they create small vibrations. This causes the solids to have a definite shape.

(b) Liquids and gases flow because the molecules are separated by large gaps. They have greater gaps or
intermolecular spaces. Intermolecular attractions are minimal due to the enormous intermolecular forces,
allowing liquids and gases to flow.

(c) Ice cubes form in the freezer because they Are lowering the temperature, and hence the movement, to the point
where they'll just vibrate in place.

(d) Ice cream melts quickly on a hot day because it absorbs the heat that is transferred through conduction. As a
result of the increased energy, it causes the atom to vibrate, resulting in the transformation of a solid into a
liquid.

(e) Gases do not have a definite shape because gases' molecules are loosely packed and have extensive
intermolecular gaps, they do not have a definite shape or volume. As a result, they move around. Because the
force of attraction between molecules is so weak, gases can take on any shape or volume.
