Slopes Widjojo). (You do not need to print out this worksheet)
2. Complete your work in this MS Word file. Draw arrows to show how to
get necessary factors from provided charts [using “Insert” – “Shapes” –
(Arrow) + RED colored arrow or any other drawing tools].
3. Print out you MS Word file to be PDF file.
4. Submit your PDF file through emas.ui.ac.id. If failed, submit your PDF file

Slope Stability Analysis Write down your calculations

PROBLEM 1:
A long natural slope in sands of unsaturated and saturated unit weights of 19 kN/m3 and 20 kN/m3,
respectively. The slope is inclined at 18 to the horizontal. After heavy rainfall, the water table may
increase, and seepage is roughly parallel to the slope. A slip has developed on a plane parallel to the
surface at a depth of 5 m. Determine the depth of water table that would lead to a slope failure (e.g., the
factor of safety = 1) along the slip plane using ’ = 30. (Modified after Craig’s Soil Mechanics 2004)

PROBLEM 2:
A 45 slope is excavated to a depth of 8m in a deep layer of saturated clay of unit weight 19 kN/m3: the
relevant shear strength parameters are cu = 65 kN/m2 and u = 0. Determine the factor of safety for the trial
failure surface specified in figure below. The cross-sectional area ABCD is 70m 2. (Modified after Craig’s
Soil Mechanics 2004)

PROBLEM 3:
A 45 slope is excavated to a depth of 8m in a deep layer of saturated clay of unit weight 19 kN/m3: the
relevant shear strength parameters are cu = 65 kN/m2 and u = 0. Determine the factor of safety using
Taylor’s stability chart for (1) firm stratum at base of excavation, and (2) firm stratum at 12 m below DC
plane. (Modified after Craig’s Soil Mechanics 2004)

First stratum at base of excavation DH=H

= 1 the factor of safety is 0.17
