Jeah: Good afternoon Grade 7 Pythagoras. I am Jeresse Jeah Recaforte.
Philip: And I am Philip Andrew Sajise.
Jeah and Philip: Your newscasters that give you new and fresh reports today!
Jeah: Our headline for today, Things that we have to do before, during and after a typhoon. Let’s go to Justine
to know about what must we do before a typhoon.
Justine: Thank you Jeah. Before a typhoon we must:
1. Inspect your house if necessary repair/fixing is needed.
2. Before typhoon strikes, you must clean up your houses’s drainage system so it won’t get clogged up.
3. Store an adequate supply of food and water that would last for a few days. Canned goods are ideal
especially if cooking is not possible.
4. Put everything in your house in an elevated position especially items that generate electricity so that
water won’t penetrate into them in case floodwater rushes inside your house.
5. Harvest crops that can be yielded immediately.
6. For fishing folk, place boats in a safe area.
7. If you are living in a lowland, hazard prone and/ or risked areas, the ideal resort is to evacuate as early
as possible.
8. Always keep flashlights, candles, and batteries and first-aid supplies available.
9. It is important as well to have an available transistor radio so you can be updated about the typhoon
and its current location.
10. Frequently listen to your local radio, television or visit Weather Philippines for storm advisories on the
progress of the typhoon.
Justine: That’s all back to you Philip.
Philip: Now let’s go to Sergei to know what must we do during a typhoon.
Sergei: The things that we must do during a typhoon are:
1. Stay inside the house and keep calm. Postpone any travel.
2. In case of flooding, turn off the main sources of electricity to prevent electrical accidents.
3. Avoid wading through flooded areas to avoid water-transmitted disseases.
4. Do not operate any electrical equipment during a flood.
5. Do not use gas or electrical appliances that have been flooded.
6. Keep an eye on lighted candles or gas lamps.
7. Heed the advice of the local authorities if they ask you to evacuate your area. If there is a need to
move to an evacuation center, follow these reminders:
*Evacuate calmly.
*Close the windows and turn off the main power switch.
*Put important appliances and belongings in a high ground and
*Avoid the way leading to or along the river.
Sergei: That’s all back to you Philip.
Philip: Thank you Sergei. Now lastly let’s go to Jeah to discuss the things that we must do after a typhoon.
Jeah: Thank you Philip. The things that we must do after a typhoon are:
1. Monitor to your radio, television or visit Weather Philippines for storm advisories on the progress of
the typhoon.
2. Check your house for damage and make necessary repairs at once. Avoid scattered debris especially tin
and lumber as there may be rusty nails protruding.
3. Wear proper safety gear and equipment when working in hazardous areas.
4. If your house was damaged, make sure that it is already safe and stable when you enter.
5. Have a knowledgeable person inspect electrical connections before using electrical appliances.
6. Watch out for live wires or outlet immersed in water.
7. Report damaged electrical cables and fallen electric posts to the authorities.
8. Beware of dangerous animals such as snakes that may have entered your house.
9. Boil water before drinking it to avoid diseases.
10. Avoid contaminated food resulting from the lack of electricity and refrigeration.
11. Do not let water accumulate in tires, cans or pots to avoid creating a favorable condition for mosquito
breeding that can cause dengue.
Jeah: That’s all back to you Philip.
