1. What kind of literary piece is Biag ni Lam-Ang?

Biag ni Lam-Ang is an epic story of the Ilocano people from the Ilocos region of
the Philippines. It is notable for being the first Philippine folk epic to be recorded
in written form, and was one of only two folk epics documented during the
Philippines’ Spanish Colonial period, along with the Bicolano epic of Handiong. It
is also noted for being a folk epic from a “Christianized” lowland people group,
with elements incorporated into storytelling.

2. What do you think is the theme of the epic?

The theme of the epic revolves around the bravery and courage of the main
character portrayed by Lam-Ang, who was gifted with speech as early as his day of
birth, who embarked on a series of adventures which culminated in his heroic
death and subsequent resurrection.

3. When Lam-Ang popped out from Namongan, what were his supernatural
powers that he showed?

It took four people to help Namongan give birth. As soon as the baby popped out,
he spoke and asked that he be given the name Lam-Ang. He also chose his
godparents and asked where his father was.
4. Why did Lam-Ang go out for a journey?

After 9 months Lam-Ang was worried for his father so he decided to go on a


journey to look for his father.

5. What was the dream of Lam-ang?

During his exhaustion journey, he decided to rest for a while. He fell asleep and
had a dream about his father’s head being stuck on a pole by the Igorot.

6. Why did Lam-ang kill many Igorots?

Lam-Ang was furious when he learned what had happened to his father. He
rushed to their village and killed them all, except for one whom he let go so that
he could tell other people about Lam-Ang’s greatness.

7. In what river Lam-Ang was bathed upon returning to Nalbuan?

Upon returning to Nalbuan in triumph, he was bathed by women in the


Amburayan river. All the fish died because of the dirt and odor from Lam-Ang’s
body.
8. How did Lam-ang catch the attention of Ines Kannoyan and her parents?

Ines’ house was surrounded by many suitors, so Lam-Ang thought of something to


catch her attention. He had his rooster crow, which caused a nearby house to fall.
His dog barked, and suddenly, the house rose up again. This caught the attention
of Ines’ parents and called Lam-Ang. The rooster expressed his love and finally,
Ines’ parents agreed to a marriage with their daughter if Lam-Ang could give them
a double value of their wealth. Lam-Ang had no problem with this, so he and Ines
got married.

9. What was the tradition for the newly married man based on the epic?

Based on the epic it was a tradition to have a newly married man swim in the river
for the rarang fish.

10.What happened when Lam-Ang swam in the river to catch rarang fish?

Lam-Ang dove straight into the mouth of the water monster Berkakan. Ines had
Marcos get his bones, which she covered with a piece of cloth. His rooster crowed
and his dog barked and slowly the bones started to move. Back alive, Lam-Ang
and his wife lived happily ever after with his white rooster and gray dog.
