TECHNICAL INFORMATION LETTER

BENTLY NEVADA EQUIPMENT INSPECTIONS AND MAINTENANCE

APPLICATION
All gas turbines equipped with Bently Nevada shaft displacement probes.

PURPOSE
Bently Nevada shaft displacement probes are installed on every GE heavy-duty gas turbine currently built. The
equipment provides additional vibration monitoring capability that may be used to provide advanced rotordynamic
diagnostic capabilities. As with any precision instrumentation, periodic inspections and maintenance are required to
ensure its continued reliability.

Compliance Category

O - Optional Identifies changes that may be beneficial to some, but not necessarily all,
operators. Accomplishment is at customer's discretion.

M - Maintenance Identifies maintenance guidelines or best practices for reliable equipment

operation.

C - Compliance Required Identifies the need for action to correct a condition that, if left uncorrected,
may result in reduced equipment reliability or efficiency. Compliance may be
required within a specific operating time.

A - Alert Failure to comply with the TIL could result in equipment damage or facility
damage. Compliance is mandated within a specific operating time.

S – Safety Failure to comply with this TIL could result in personal injury. Compliance is
mandated within a specific operating time.

BACKGROUND DISCUSSION
GE mounts two Bently Nevada proximity probes 90
degrees apart on each gas turbine bearing to monitor
rotor vibration. These probes are eddy-current probes
that send voltage readings to a panel that conditions
and processes the signals for vibration monitoring.
Rotor vibration readings augment the bearing cap
vibration readings that are measured by seismic
sensors. Data from proximity probes is not read by gas
turbine controller logic for turbine protection. Instead,
proximity probes serve to diagnose vibration issues Figure 2: Front view of a typical Bently panel
and are useful for determining unbalance of rotors, and
identifying rubs or bearing damage. A number of sites have reported that their Bently
panels (see Figure 2) display errors, which prevent
some or all vibration data from being read and/or
recorded. In such cases, the seismic sensors external
to the bearing caps provide turbine protection when
high levels of vibration occur. However, with non-
working probes it is impossible to trend historical OSM
(On Site Monitor) data of proximity probes, or to record
real-time ADRE (Automated Diagnostics for Rotating
Equipment) and/or System 1 data for rotordynamic
analysis and diagnosis.

GE has identified several factors responsible for missing

proximity probe data. The most common are
misaligned or damaged keyphasors (see Figure 3), and
damaged cabling (see Figure 4). Even with the majority

Proximitor® and Bently rack. These probes detect the
relative position from a rotor journal or thrust collar
surface to the surface where they are mounted (see
figure 1 above). The AC and DC components of this
voltage reading reach the Bently panel or rack typically
located in the PEECC (Packaged Electrical and
Electronic Control Center) at site. The DC voltage (also
known as gap voltage) corresponds to the distance to
the journal surface relative to a zero reference, giving
the relative position of the journal within the bearing.
The AC voltage waveform is coupled with a reference
signal (keyphasor) that fires once per shaft revolution.
These waveforms are processed together by the Bently
rack to provide a value of peak-to-peak vibration
amplitude and phase angle relative to the notch on the
shaft. The Bently rack can also be used to output shaft
orbit and filter waveforms into constituent frequencies. Figure 3: Circled region showing rubbed
