Introduction

The Corvina Prime Software Package is a modular system of graphic applica-

tions for designing high security documents. The software elements of this
system can be installed and used in several combinations, providing a flexible
solution for the needs of any security prepress design system.

• Corvina Plus – Top-level total graphic security design ap-

plication that can be extended with other software options
listed below. They can be used as modules in Corvina Plus.
• Art Screen – Versatile high-resolution security screening.
• Vector Premium – High-precision Guilloche and other
unique vector security element generation.
• Rainbow – Special security colorization preview module.
• Hand Craft Tools – Extra unique freehand tools from Cor-
vina Engraver.
• Retracer – For cleaning and remaking old design artworks.
• Latent – Latent image generator with on-screen modeling.
• Inspector For Design – For inspecting the complete graph-
ic security design artwork on the screen before printing.

General Software
System Features

• Exclusivity – The Corvina design system

contains many unique tools and methods
that are not included in any other commer-
cial or security graphic design software.
• Ultimate precision – The precision of in-
ternal data processing is much higher than
in other commercial applications. The full
digital workflow provides 100% accuracy,
identical step-and-repeated clones on im-
position plate or film and easy archiving.
All measuring and drawing tools and other
functions work with the highest precision.
• Large vector and pixel data processing
– Vector and pixel graphic images can be
created, imported, edited, retouched and
exported. Exact conversion between these
formats is possible. Extremely high resolu-
tion pixel graphic files are produced and
processed with no problems (e.g. scanned
from line work, halftone or continuous
tone images), in several formats. Speed
optimization and fast save in binary format
are included.

 • Extended coloring – Using predefined and user definable
colors. Importing or creating custom color databases. Spec-
trophotometric direct input for unique colors. Handling
several color models including BW, Grayscale, RGB, CMYK,
LAB and up to 12-color N-Separated. Accurate preview of
overprinting colors on the screen, optimized for imitating
the final look of the security design artworks to be printed.
Definition of virtual printing plates up to 12. Possibilities for
optional color calibration.
• Infinite undo and history – The software has unlimited
undo possibilities within a session, the designer can go
back to any step of the artwork creation by the touch of
a button. Undo marks can be set for easy navigation be-
tween operation stages. A separate History Window shows
the list of operation steps which can be renamed for easier
remembering.
• Super Objects – Special modifications are also provided by
the unique Super Objects with editable individual creation
history. These graphic design elements are complex and
dynamic multi-level creations, hence all of their attributes
can be modified and adjusted individually in a very fast and
comfortable way, in real-time. These functions allow fine-
tuning of design elements, making unique modifications
and distortions easily.

• Improved interface – Interface customization pos-
sibilities with skins. Fast navigation and information
tools. Grouping favourite tools for easy access.
• Unlimited zoom, multiple view modes – Infinite
magnification of any portions of the design artwork,
together with view marking and zoom undo. Multiple
views can be set for the same artwork at the same
time, from draft to full color preview. Dim screen and
extended view modes with dual monitor capabilities.
• Multi-control – The software supports mouse/track-
ball control combined with keyboard commands,
and it is also optimized for using a digital stylus and
tablet.
• Compatibility – Imports and exports files from/to
other software with the help of handling the most
known graphic file formats.
• Openness – The system is expandable with Jura’s
optional software modules. The elements of the sys-
tem can be integrated into any other existing and ad-

proofing to high-quality digital proofers. High-speed
Raster Image Processing (RIP) with more advanced
capabilities – higher resolution, more colors etc. –
than in commercial prepress workflow. Producing
Adobe-compatible files for security imagesetters and
platesetters.
• Security – Multi-level data protection is provided
against unauthorised data access, including propri-
etary file formats, the operating system’s password,
a hardware-dependent software license and a hard-
ware key.
• Assistance – On-line help/manual is available on the
screen. Templates/ example files are included.

• 64-bit – The Corvina software family is 64-bit only. It

processes bigger amount of data without memory
limitation and works faster.

Corvina Plus

Top-Level Total Graphic Security

Application
Corvina Plus is Jura’s flagship total prepress design software to create and compose
elements and finalize up-to-date graphic artworks of all kinds of security documents
– including banknotes and other high security products – at the highest level.
It also serves as a host application for optional software modules developed focus-
ing on the most common requirements of high security printing.
Corvina Plus processes the main categories of computer graphics – vector objects
and pixel images – very effectively and provides standard output: PostScript, 1-bit
TIFF and PDF.

Features
In addition to the most important general features (page 4), Cor-
vina Plus contains almost 400 tools and commands with the fol-
lowing functionality:
• Drawing and typing – Making sketches, creating draft designs
on screen and drawing elements using precise freehand tools
or generating with the machine. Directly entering text objects.
Transforming, distorting texts in many ways. Special font usage
in any languages, including decorative fonts, national
charac-
ters, special signs and symbols (Windows supported fonts).
• Backgrounds – Covering surfaces, filling areas. Rapid, user
adjustable production of fine straight and wavy linescreens,
sophisticated relief/medallion effects and many security pat-
terns, including randomization, transitions and any freehand-
drawn, generated or imported elements etc. Multi-layer and
multi-color background variations for effective protection.
• Linewidth modulation – Applying linewidth modulation effect
on all graphic elements freely with detailed and sophisticated
methods on spline-point or pixel level. Combination possibili-
ties with other effects such as distortions, modulations etc.
• Security screening – Vector-based and pixel-based protection
methods for reproducing any original graphic image (pictures,
logos, portraits etc.) instead of using commercial dot screening.

• Selection – Separating portions of the artwork, by free hand or by
automated processes, to be edited or replaced while protecting the
other parts against any alterations.
• Transformation – Changing position, size, shape and orientation in
many usual and unique ways, also in combinations. Freehand and

tions, image manipulation and filtering, and detailed editing of high-

Versatile Security Screening

Art Screen is an optional module for Corvina Plus providing very flexible security image repro-
duction techniques for any original graphic image (portraits, pictures, logos etc.) instead of
commercial dot screening.

Art Screen contains the following unique functions:
• Free Screen – Representing any image using free-
ly definable base patterns.
• G-Screen – Stochastic style screening based on
unique user definable elements.
• U-Screen – Alternative flexible screening based
on few different elements.
• Cell Screen – Random vector screening based on
organic patterns.
• TSP Screen – Special vector screening made of a
single line.
• H-Screen – Screening with uniformed density.

Vector Premium
High-Precision Vector
Element Generation
Vector Premium is an optional module for Corvina Plus for gen-
erating high-precision Guilloche and other vector graphic secu-
rity elements in an extremely flexible, unique way, in real-time.

Features
Vector Premium contains the following unique features:
• Traditional elements – Perfectly creates all kinds of traditional security graphic curves and
patterns, such as Guilloche rosettes, linemotifs, reliefs (medallions), background motifs etc.
• Modern design – Allows to create special modern patterns that cannot be produced with
traditional drawing devices.
• Future plans – It’s unique User Programmable Graphical Interface helps to develop infinite,
completely new settings for wonderful never-seen security graphic elements.
• Databases – Two graphic element databases are provided for Vector Premium, including
Guilloche rosettes, linemotifs, linewidth modulation patterns, reliefs, special backgrounds
and many others: Vector Collection is freely included, while Vector Collection Plus is an op-
tional database. The elements are ready to use, and they can also be freely edited, as need-
ed. The modified versions can be individually saved, resulting practically unlimited number
of new security design elements – a unique custom database.

• Ultra-high precision – The smallest details of vector-
based elements can be freely and accurately controlled.
• Linewidth modulation – LWM is fully integrated in
Vector Premium, variable line thickness can be applied

widths can be specified and the transition between
them can be continuous or variable, representing any
graphic image, such as sample portraits, logos, hand-
drawn illustrations etc.
• Easy-to-use – The unique User Programmable Graphi-
cal Interface makes the software understandable and
usable immediately without difficulties caused by spe-
cific language or mathematic formulas.
• Openness – The capabilities of this interface are far
beyond the creation of traditional style and usual ele-
ments: on master user level it is possible to invent and
build ‘non-existing drawing machines’ on the screen.

Rainbow
Security Colorization
Rainbow is an optional module for Corvina Plus for security colorization preview, imitating the
final look of the artwork to be printed including special effects such as Rainbow coloring and
Orloff-masking.

Features
Rainbow contains the following unique functions:
• Rainbow Window – Applying security colorization
settings with the on-screen imitation of inks on the
different virtual printing plates, defining color seg-
ments and stripes, changing their direction, position
and symmetry, applying Pantone® or user definable
unique colors.
• Print Preview – Proofing files, sending the design in
CMYK color pixel format to a PostScript-compatible
proofer to create a high-quality final impression of
the whole colored artwork.

Main Advantages
Rainbow provides the following special benefits:
• Interactive coloring – Interactive color selection and positioning help to cre-
ate different color versions of the same design artwork in almost no time.
• Two directions – Horizontal and vertical direction can be defined for Rainbow
stripes.
• Realistic overprint simulation – Overprint is calculated using white and black
ink spectra or based on Lab values and transparency.
• Pushing the borders – Maximum 12 plates and 4 Orloff-masks can be emu-
lated, with 7 colors on each plate, giving total freedom for designers to see
what they imagined.
• Non-printing elements – Such design elements (paper, holograms etc.) are
simulated with Lab images taking the printing order into consideration.
• Outputting results – The resulted image is exportable into Lab colorized TIFF
at any resolution.

Hand Craft Tools
Unique Freehand Tools Extension
Hand Craft Tools is an optional module for Corvina Plus containing 6 extra unique drawing/
manipulating tools originally developed for the artistic Corvina Engraver software to support
the very special demands and comfortable freehand work of engravers and graphic artists.

Features
Hand Craft Tools contains the following unique functions:
• Massage Tool – Freehand local deformation of splines for fine-tuning
of linescreens, modifying their ‘3D-look’.
• Retouch Tool – Local freehand linewidth modulation of splines, also
for darkening/lightening the look of linescreens.
• Smooth Tool – Freehand straightening the curved segments of splines.
• LWSmooth Tool – Freehand local deformation of linewidth modulat-
ed splines for equalizing their linewidths.
• Spline Tool – Drawing freehand splines directly and more comfortably.
• Wrinkle Tool – Creating wrinkled cutting of linescreens etc. manually.

Hand Craft Tools provides the following special benefits:
• Freehand manipulations – These user-friendly tools give the joy of the freehand work back
to artists and designers when using the computer.
• Tablet-optimized – Besides the normal mouse, the freehand tools are optimized also for

Cleaning and
Remaking Old Design
Artworks
Retracer is an optional module for Corvina Plus, a cleaning
and redrawing feature for designers to remake old design
artworks.
This software is specially developed to overcome a well-
known problem: how to re-create designs which are origi-
nally created with obsolete, unavailable methods.
These tools enable an easy and clean digitalization of ex-
isting printed objects by creating their visible elements,
including accurate line shapes, linewidths, and all details.

Features
Retracer contains the following unique functions:
• Mergery – Cleaning up scanned images and increasing
their quality.
• ReTracer – Regenerating graphic details by a manually
controlled vector-based process.

Main Advantages
Retracer provides the following special benefits:
• Cleaning – Clarifying high-resolution images.
• Enhancing – These tools eliminate the disturbances caused by scanning,
and enhance the useful visible information.
• Re-generating – Semi-automatic processes are provided to generate

Latent

Latent Image Generation with

On-Screen Modeling
Latent is an optional module for Corvina Plus for latent image design genera-
tion and on-screen modeling in three dimensions. The latent image consists of
two linescreens perpendicularly masked into each other, linewidth modulated
by a pattern, and printed with intaglio printing. There are two different soft-
ware functions for generating latent images: Latent Creator and Latent Image.

Features
Latent contains the following unique functions:
• Latent Creator – The method for creating vector latent image designs using spline-based
visible input information, in editable vector output format.
• Latent Image – Pixel latent image design generation using grayscale images for visible
input information, in freely definable output resolution.
• View 3D – To create 3D view of selected latent images on the screen using selectable meth-
ods modeling options.

• Faithful emulation – Dragging, rotating and laying
down an emulated paper with the intaglio printed im-
age on the screen.
• Various previews – Colors are freely definable, infinite

For Design
Inspecting the Complete
Design Artwork
Inspector For Design is an optional module for Corvina Plus for checking the digital
graphic security design data on the computer screen in respect to overprinting and
registration of separations, printability of all details, and design alterations, before
outputting and production.

Features
Inspector For Design contains the following unique functions:
• Checking intaglio over offset – The connection between intaglio-printed and
offset-printed design parts can be checked and controlled on pixel-level on the
screen. The finest handmade corrections are possible.
• Printing limitation checking – According to user definable special parameters
the software automatically marks the unprintable design parts and creates their
graphic reference image and an itemized list that is exportable for data archiving.
• Printing instablility checking – The software automatically marks also parts of
the design that are printable but could be more sensitive for printing therefore
may look differently on the final printout. A graphic reference image and an ex-
portable list are also created.
• Automatic matching – After any modification, the software can automatically
match the original and the modified design and graphically displays the differ-
ence of the related printing plates on the screen. This helps to ensure that only the
necessary parts are modified.
• Detailed verification – All found items are collected and saved in a reference list.
They can be verified at any magnification and marked individually for approval,
that is also useful in case further modifications are needed.
• Listing errors – The difference list can be exported for data archiving or further
use.

• Compatibility – Inspector For Design can be integrated into any other existing
prepress design workflow and saves time and costs especially when using film
omitting technologies.
• Quality control – Enables checking the security design to prevent any failures in
a known printing environment. The highest accuracy ensures the perfect control
of linewidth, miter limit, design failure, printability. This software helps the control-
ling work directly by computer before producing any print-ready material.
• Golden Reference verification – Inspector For Design enables comparison of the
single original security design artwork with modified versions, both automatically
and visually, still on the screen, in one or more steps depending on how many new
modifications are needed until the Golden Reference is approved.

Plate Statistics

Measuring Ink Density of Virtual Plates

Plate Statistics is an optional module for Corvina Plus for measuring the ink coverage ratio on
individual printing plates.
When designing plastic cards it is impossible to get around the problem of lamination – the
design artwork must stay under a strict density limit. This tool helps to measure the ink den-
sity of virtual printing plates, so the printability of the sophisticated design artworks can be
checked and ensured on the screen. Additionally, the built-in calculation for ink statistics pro-
vides detailed information about the amount of rainbow color components – the different
inks on the same printing plate – so the final ink consumption of the printing process can be
optimized.

Features
Plate Statistics contains the following unique
functions:
• Plate Statistics Tool – Measures the den-
sity (ink coverage ratio) of the design
artwork on screen and calculates ink de-
mand for individual printing plates.

• Ink Statistics function – Calculates the

amount of different inks on common
plates for designs containing security
rainbow colorization.

• Plate Statistics 2 – An advanced and

quicker measuring method.

Main Advantages
Plate Statistics provides the following special benefits:
• Measuring density – Helps creating multi-layer designs
with limited overall ink coverage ratio (e.g. laminated plas-
tic cards).
• Ink demand calculation – Calculates relative ink demand
on the same printing plate, which cannot be estimated vis-
ually when using rainbow colorization. Helps to estimate
the final ink consumption of the printing.
