Abstract
Nowadays, almost every people possessed a smartphone in their pocket, bringing it everywhere
and use it almost everytime. Then, without our awareness, the phone are integrated into our
life, making it an addiction-like causing medicine, that we now depend on our smartphone
without our concern. Using smartphone, is an unavoidable phenomenon that we will certainly
done, whoever is us, but in this case, us, as a moslem. How do the Islamic perspectives about the
smatphone usage and what the literature and expert view about this, it all will be served in this
research. The first is we think that smartphone is integrated and making some new addiction to
people especially the youth, the people around the writer, but after we done the study and
reasearch, yes Islam also cope with this issue, and there are also many expert view about the
usage of the smartphone, in here, we define into smartphone features. There are some
generalization of the smartphone features that was; communication, internet, entertainment,
application, gaming, data storage, lifestyle, and navigation. And it is indirectly affect our
behaviour in our daily lifes. Our research using interview and literature study method to gather
the data to know how big the impact of the smartphone usage of the respondents of the
interviewee. The result we find that Islam teachings and some expert cope with this issue on
some ethics of the smarphone usage, that was in: Communication on smartphone, finding
information on the internet, using the smartphone for gaming, using the camera, using for
eduacation, smartphone as lifestyle, and using it when we are on praying. And our respondents
showing that they are dependent on some feature of the smartphone, especially the internet and
communication that become crucial in their life.

INTRODUCTION
Today, smartphone is a "must have" technology of community that has been attached
tighly in our daily lives. Every economic circles of the high and low have it because the
price is now easily accessible by all people start by hundreds of thousands to tens of
millions of rupiah. The usefulness of this smartphone is very diverse, apart from
communication like regular mobile phones, this smartphone also multi-function so
impressed practical and efficient without having to carry a lot of luggage, for example
read a book can now be done with a smartphone without the need to carry physical books
that are thick and heavy, listen musics can also be done with a smartphone without having
to carry another tool such as speakers, tape, mp3 player, browsing even now do not need
to carry a heavy laptop or PC can now be done using a smartphone, even smartphones are
generally equipped with a camera so we do not need to bring digital camera.

But do we realize that as Muslims this smartphone have a big impact on our daily lives
associated with the teachings and culture taught by Islam. Of course, the subject of this
smartphone are not in the era of the Prophet Muhammad that need further study of the
laws and interests of these objects. In general everything certainly has its advantages and
disadvantages, benefits as well as disadvantages. So how should we use it according to
our Islamic teachings? Of course our religion is a universal law that account everything in
our daily lives start from our birth, till our death and funeral that explained all in detail.
There is a hadits narrated by Muawiya:
I heard Allah's Messenger ( ‫ )ﷺ‬saying, "If Allah wants to do good to a
person, He makes him comprehend the religion. I am just a distributor, but the grant is
from Allah. (And remember) that this nation (true Muslims) will keep on following
Allah's teachings strictly and they will not be harmed by any one going on a different
path till Allah's order (Day of Judgment) is established."
(Sahih Bukhari: 71)

We will use interview as a simple survey and literature study method to gather relevan
information about the smartphone usage in Islamic perspectives. The respondents will be
10 sample of IPSE 2013 students that choosen randomly. The data will be analyzed
qualitative and quantitatively. The instrument inserted to google form to simplify the
methodology.

Ethic and Usage

An expert states that standard definitions of ethics have typically included such phrases as
'the science of the ideal human character' or 'the science of moral duty [ CITATION
Kid03 \l 1033 ]. Another experts define ethics as a set of concepts and principles that
guide us in determining what behavior helps or harms sentient creatures [ CITATION
Pau06 \l 1033 ]
Three Major Types of Ethic
There are three major types of ethic that are meta-ethics, normative ethics, and applied
ethics [CITATION FieEt \l 1033 ], that will described as below:
1) Meta-Ethics
Concerning the theoretical meaning and reference of moral propositions, and how
their truth values (if any) can be determined
2) Normative Ethics
Concerning the practical means of determining a moral course of action
3) Applied Ethics
Concerning what a person is obligated (or permitted) to do in a specific situation or a
particular domain of action.

Smartphone
Smartphone is a phone that is internet enabled which usually provides functions Personal
Digital Assistant (PDA), such as calendar functions, date book, address book, calculator
and notes[ CITATION She07 \l 1033 ]. Meanwhile, according to David Wood,
Executive Vice President of PT Symbian OS, "The smart phone can be distinguished
from ordinary mobile phones in two fundamental ways: how they are made and what they
could do." Another notion gives emphasis to the difference of these two factors
[ CITATION She07 \l 1033 ]

The Difference
Actually smartphones, including the type of mobile phone, what is meant is a cell phone,
like mobile phones and smartphones also have all the functions possessed by the mobile
phone as a means of communication is the function to call and send SMS (Short Message
Service). [ CITATION She07 \l 1033 ]
Types of Smartphone
A 2012 “ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology” Eden
Dahlstrom declares that from 2004 to 2012, the percentage of undergraduate students
who own a smartphone has increased by a staggering 5545% [ CITATION Dah12 \l
1033 ] that was a very significant number and certainly increased more to now 2016.
That also influenced by so many producers keep manufacturing new smartphone yet
cheaper cost. But generally, all the smartphones can be properly classified by its
operation system of the smartphones because whatever is the corporation producer the
operation system will always from the some few certain giant corporation, that are:
a. Android OS
b. Symbian OS
c. Windows Phone
d. IOS
e. Blackberry OS

Smartphone Features
There are some major feature that are communications, browsing/ internet, entertainment,
application gaming, data storage, lifestyle, and navigation [ CITATION Mid12 \l
1033 ] as described below:
1) Communications
2) Browsing/Internet
3) Entertainment
4) Application
5) Gaming
6) Data Storage
7) Lifestyle
8) Navigation

LITERATURE REVIEW OF SMARTPHONE USAGE IN ISLAMIC

PERSPECTIVE
As moslems, we have obligation to grasp our preach that based on the Holy Quran and
The Sunnah of our prophet. As the times comes along, there were so many things comes
up to the surface that doesn’t happen at the time our Prophet pbuh, but still, we have to
act based on the Islamic teachings. The prophet has a sightings that an era like this will
come and also comes a lot of newly invented matters, as stated in hadith below:
“One day after the morning Salat, the Messenger of Allah (‫)ﷺ‬
exhorted us to the extent that the eyes wept and the hearts shuddered with fear. A man
said: 'Indeed this is a farewell exhortation. [So what] do you order us O Messenger of
Allah?' He said: 'I order you to have Taqwa of Allah, and to listen and obey, even in the
case of an Ethiopian slave. Indeed, whomever among you lives, he will see much
difference. Beware of the newly invented matters, for indeed they are astray. Whoever
among you sees that, then he must stick to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly
guided Khulafa', cling to it with the molars.'"
(H. Tirmidhi No. 2676)
Though, it is actually meant in religious matter, and since smartphone also accounted to
our Islamic teachings then we have also be careful. And The Holy Quran states:
”It is not fitting for a Believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah
and His Messenger to have any option about their decision: if any one disobeys Allah
and His Messenger, he is indeed on a clearly wrong Path.”
(33:36)

“O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those charged with
authority among you. If ye differ in anything among yourselves, refer it to Allah and His
Messenger, if ye do believe in Allah and the Last Day: That is best, and most suitable for
final determination.”
(4:59)

“We sent aforetime our apostles with clear signs and sent down with them the Book and
the Balance (of Right and Wrong), that they may stand forth in justice.”
(57:25)
So we prohibited to do something that was disobeying Quran and Sunnah. And keep
grasping the teachings of both as the basic source of living life. Thus, we tried to study
the details and hope that what we have done is included in the good deeds. As we know,
smartphone is a ”new” thing that exist in our era but not in our Prophet pbuh era. So the
ulama needs to study about this thing by seeing the fundamental, reasons, functions, and
analyze it by relate it to our fundamental guidance that is Quran and Sunnah. To make
this section in a focus lense, we categorize it based on the Smartphone functions and
features that will further explained below:

The Effects of Smartphone to Human Daily Lives

Effects on Behavior
Contemporary studies show that these devices foster the creation of new usage habits
making them even more personal and pervasive [CITATION AOu05 \l 1033 ]. Some
research also conclude that the effects of smartphone addiction on smartphone usage
clearly has a significant theoretical as well as practical implications [CITATION
Ber14 \l 1033 ]. This may lead to effects another aspects such as Social, Education, and
also politics.
Effects on Social
“While communication technologies do not cause these changes, people's engagement
with the functionality of such technologies interacts with social and organizational
expectations and engenders changes in the pace, space, boundaries and stress of work.”
(Mazmanian et al, 2005)

As we seen in our daily lives, this technology can makes us near to the far people, yet,
makes us far to near people. Still in relation with previous literature, this could be one of
branch cause by the “Addiction” [CITATION Ber14 \l 1033 ] yet some research
related to the study also showing that this may lead to psychological problem like unusual
“Boredom” and “Loneliness” in a cycle loop when using this smartphone and heavily
impact the social aspects of the user [ CITATION Say13 \l 1033 ]

Effects on Education
Due to various function of this advanced technology, its functionality and entertainment
feature can easily accessible everywhere and anywhere people who involved in education
can abuse it and use it inappropriate times such as in learning-teaching session, but beside
it, the smartphone feature can also boost up the education progress such as with e-books,
web based learning, etc. [CITATION Buc13 \l 1033 ]

Islam and Smartphone as a Lifestyle

Quran states:

”The mutual rivalry for piling up (the good things of this world) diverts you (from the
more serious things). Until ye visit the graves. But nay, ye soon shall know (the reality).
Again, ye soon shall know! Nay, were ye to know with certainty of mind, (ye would
beware!). Verily, You shall see the blazing Fire (Hell)!”
(102:1-6)

”And render to the kindred their due rights, as (also) to those in want, and to the
wayfarer: But squander not (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift. Verily
spendthrifts are brothers of the Evil Ones; and the Evil One is to his Lord (himself)
ungrateful.
(17:26-27)
One of the principle of moslem when they live is not wasting much money on mundane
things, and seeking for it as passion is prohibited as the verse stated. We should do Zuhud
instead, that is become simple, if we can still use our smartphone we don’t have to buy
one, or buy the newest one everytime.

Islam and Communication : Giving salaam

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (‫ )ﷺ‬as saying: ”Six are the rights
of a Muslim over another Muslim. It was said to him: Allah's Messenger, what are these?
Thereupon he said: When you meet him, offer him greetings....”
(H. Sahih Muslim: 2162a)
Though we are not meet him physically but the fact that you can speak with him/her in
distance and interact is considering also as ”meet” and since we will having conversation
just like we met directly we have to offer greetings.

Be Careful of What to Say

Just like a direct conversation, communicate over phone sometime become quite
sustainable to control, because the communication is private and closed to other listener,
so it wil tend to people to saying such gossip, people’s badness, worthless chat and etc.
[CITATION AbdSy \l 1033 ] And again because of the character of this feature,
sometime people will become more talkactive and brave to say something in this virtual
communication.

Communicate Effectively
Narrated Jabir:
As it says, even in communicate in any form in smartphone, we have to appreciate other
people [ CITATION AbdSy \l 1033 ]. By clearly introduce your identity and don’t play
a joke when people talk seriously.

Tabayyun
Allah in Quran Says:
” O ye who believe! If a wicked person comes to you with any news, ascertain the truth,
lest ye harm people unwittingly, and afterwards become full of repentance for what ye
have done.”
(49:6)
We asked to check and verify an information that come to us and this is what is called
tabayyun, though the verse is specify the person as ”wicked” person, but in this case if
you open up the internet and start looking for source that the writer or the source are
unknown, so we don’t even know how is the writer’s character so we analogize it
tabayyun should also be done in this case [ CITATION Moh09 \l 1033 ].

Preserve View
Allah said in the Holy Quran:
”Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that
will make for greater purity for them: And Allah is well acquainted with all that they do.”
(24:30)
It is a general secret that in internet we can see almost eveything we desired, including
pictures/photos or videos that are haram for us to see. So to deal with this we have to be
more careful of the things that we seen in internet.

Conceal Disgrace
There is a hadith Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger ( ‫ )ﷺ‬as saying:
”All the people of my Ummah would get pardon for their sins except those who publicise
them. And (it means) that a servant should do a deed during the night and tell the people
in the morning that he has done so and so, whereas Allah has concealed it. And he does a
deed during the day and when it is night he tells the people, whereas Allah has concealed
it. Zuhair has used the word hijar for publicising.”
(Sahih Muslim: 2990)
It is important for us to keep our sin just to ourselves and spread it out, and also it is
prohibited for us to seek other sins. So it is suggested to ask a permission if we are about
to borrow someone’s smartphone[ CITATION AbdSy \l 1033 ]

Islam and Gaming

Nowadays, the form of the hobby, the excitement is very similar as playing games, yet,
Islam never forbid things like a game except there is some bad intention on it, like
gambling, or for disgrace other people [ CITATION AbdSy \l 1033 ] . So makes it
haram if you have bad intentions of playing it. 'Umar bin Al-Khattab narrated that:

I heard Allah's Messenger ( ‫ )ﷺ‬saying, "The reward of deeds depends upon

the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.”
(Muttafaq Alaihi)

Islam and Camera

Some scholars generalized the pictures derived as a drawing or sculpture so they say that
photograph of animate creature is prohibited [ CITATION AbdSy \l 1033 ], and
included in the category of major sins. But the scholars agreed that it is okay to take some
pictures as long it is not animate picture and taken without any bad intentions and has
some good purpose to do.

On the other side, the late Sheikh Muhammad Bakheet on a dialogue in arab news, a
former Mufti of Egypt, has made it clear that photography is not included in such
prohibition. He states that this art is no more than capturing a shade or a reflection by
special technique. He clarifies that what is forbidden is to create a likeness which has no
previous existence in order to produce something like what Allah has created. Using a
camera to take a picture is similar to fixing what we see in a mirror. No one says that
looking into mirror is forbidden because it shows a likeness of Allah's creation. We use
lenses in cameras in order to capture a mirror picture of the person or the object for which
we need a photo. It is also related to the hadith of intention so it can be haram mubah or
halal based on the intention of the user, other cases excluded [CITATION PusNa \l
1033 ].

Smartphone and Time

Actully this is general but smartphone got included in so many ways of how we use it in
our daily lives. The diverse feature is making us can spend more time on it. Narrated Ibn
`Abbas that The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said: "There are two blessings which many
people lose: (They are) Health and free time for doing good."
(Sahih Bukhari: 6412)
It is clearly an order for us to spend our time wisely in eveything especially the task that
is worth nothing so we will become the man who are mentioned at hadith and verse
mentioned.

Smartphone and Da’wah

Da’wah is very urgent in Islam, it is so important. Da’wah itself means spread or
disseminating of Islam to Others. As a result of advances and growth of mobile
technology, mobile devices are now used not just for making and receiving calls, but its
capabilities have been extended that it is now used in educational and religious matters.
Mobile learning (m-Learning) as an extension to e-Learning, is the use of mobile devices
such as smartphones and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistance) over wireless networks to
provide interactions between learners and teachers, anytime and anywhere [ CITATION
Sal15 \l 1033 ].

Smartphone and Salah

There is some ethics that nowadays very relevant that we bring our smartphone to a
mosque to do jamaah prayer. There is some case that it will ring and disturb other people.
So we have to make sure that it is remain silent as we pray. This is so important
according to a hadith describe:
“…..The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came out to the
people while they were praying and their voices were raised in the recitation. He said,
"When you pray you are talking confidentially to your Lord. So look to what you confide
to Him, and do not say the Qur'an out loud so that others hear it."
(Muwatta Malik 3:30)

This hadith referenced to forbid someone loud the voice in reciting The Quran when
someone in prayer[ CITATION Tai14 \l 1033 ]. So the ringing phone when praying are
worse so make sure to silent or turn it off while we go to a mosque or about to do prayer.

SIMPLE RESEARCH ON SMARTPHONE USAGE

Method and Design
To fulfill the good criteria of this assignment, so we done some simple research about the
relevancy of the previous chapter. In collecting the data we are using some simple
method that is collecting data by doing some qualitative and quantitative data by
interview, survey and small observation. This research include into non-experimental
research. And the design is in a simple form of questions and survey forms.
Data Collection Technique
The process of collecting data start by giving questions about the usage of smartphone in
daily lives, then giving some survey about the scale of using the smartphone feature
intensity done by using Google Form. Then correlate the data with the observation data
that derived in a real time and write it in notebook as a record.
Research Instrument
The first is interview that resulting descriptive qualitative data. The questions asked are:
a. Apa anda memiliki smartphone?
b. Apa kegunaan smartphone tersebut untuk anda?
c. Apa anda memiliki aplikasi rohani di smartphone anda?
d. Jika ya, aplikasi rohani seperti apa yang anda miliki?
e. Apakah anda memiliki aplikasi alquran di smartphone anda?
f. Jika dibandingkan dengan kitab alquran, seberapa sering anda membaca alquran
menggunakan smartphone?
i. Seberapa lama penggunaan handphone satu harinya ?
And 13 items of survey questions in the answer form of scale from 0-5 resulting
quantitative data. We are using Google Form format. Here are the form of the survey:
1) Browsing
2) Game
3) Social Media
4) Music/Video
5) Camera
6) Islamic purpose
7) No purpose
8) Spend empty time
9) Before sleep
10) After wake
11) Lifestyle
12) Confident
13) Dependency

Data Analysis Technique

The data result will analyze correspondently to previous chapter and correlate the
description whether the ethic of using smartphone now is appropriate by Islamic
perspectives or not. Then we will also try to make some charts based on the quantitative
data to show some statistics to foster the analysis of the data.

Participants
The participants in this research is IPSE students from diverse batch. Consist of total 10
sample that choose randomly, their identity not inserted.

DATA ANALYSIS
Almost all the data is showing that they instense use their smartphone features. The most
significance is their usage of Browsing, Social Media, Music, and using it before and
after sleep.
Data that are distribute normally is the camera feature to takes selfie and the relation to
confident of one person and usage for Islamic purpose. The data that showing low
intensity shown in its feature in playing games that the data are mainly < 3. Then relation
with lifestyle that mainly distribute < 3. And the dependency is high by mainly point on
4.
Thus we can see the reality that most people use this smartphone to use the feature as
spending time device. From this simple research we can’t conclude about whether there
are addiction already happen, but we interpret the data that we still have a good ethics in
using smartphone. Supported by the data that it is not really considered as their lifestyle
or using it against of the Islamic ethics. But it is proven that this device has a bad impact
related with time usage that can lead to addiction, shown by the high dependency of the
usage of smartphone not clearly significant if we combine the qualitative and the
quantitative data.

As a tool, this device also used to do some kindness. The data shown that even not
significantly high but they still use this device to do some activity for Islamic purpose.
We assume that based on the functionality of this device that not created by the mean for
Islamic purpose, this is already good that it could become a good media to do good
things.

CONCLUSSION
From our paper, we assume that it could be concluded that technology will always has
negative and positive impacts in any aspects, regardless Islamic aspects. In Islam we
fundamentally believe that the Almighty God will always true and His knowledge is far
beyond our logical thinking capability.

The first is, smartphone is a technology in a form a tool, that can be used for good or bad,
depend on the user. And the difference perspectives of scholar actually still based on the
same thing that is about its theoretical foundation in Quran and Hadith which both teach
human knowledge of ethics, manner, law, and everything in our lives including this issues
about smartphone. We are agree that this technological device is created by the
permission of Allah, and the abuse of this device is because the lack and bad of human
itself. There are so many great influence of smartphone in Islamic world especially in
communication and da’wah. But it is also comes with lot more disadvantages that against
our Islamic belief.

And to be honest, from the data that collected, based on our research smartphone bring
more mudharat (disadvantages) rather the good. It could be affected by our research
method or the objectivity of the research. This device mainly use for mundane things and
having integration to human life that will lead to global addiction of having smartphone
like eating daily.

We suggest that we have to be wiser in using our smartphone, everything that we do is

according to our intentions as stated before so intend everything to do with smartphone
with basmalah and intend everything for the sake of Allah’s pleasure. It would make our
lifes in peace and turn everything back to Allah as the Almighty One. Husnudzan to Allah
and to ourselves, do good things to erase the bad things. And do Tawbah when we make
some mistake hope that our Aml can be accepted by Allah to make us enter the paradise
with graceful and forgiveness.
