A lot of teenagers in the US decide to get a job while
they are still students. Because teenagers at work are
a common sight in most American cities and villages,
there are special regulations which say how long they
can work, how old they must be, how much they should
earn and what jobs they cannot do. Many teenagers work
in the afternoons all year round while others find a job
just for the summer holidays.

Some teenagers help their parents after school. Mark
Heyden, 16, says: ‘My dad runs a downtown sports shop
and I work there three times a week. I really like sports
and I’m interested in sports equipment so working in the
shop is good fun. I also have good contact with the
customers and I enjoy selling things.’

Another common reason for teenagers to get a part-time
job is that their parents can’t or don’t want to give them
too much pocket money. ‘My dad only gives me $120
a month which isn’t very much. If I want to take my
girlfriend out to the cinema or a pub, I need to earn some
more money’, say Robert Parish, 17.

Some older teenagers look for jobs which will help them
in their future careers. ‘I would like to study medicine
and become a doctor so I’m working at our local hospital
at the moment. Of course, I’m doing very simple jobs but
it’s not so important. The most important thing is that
I can see what it is really like and I learn about different
aspects of the job’, says Margaret Daniels, 17.
