Here's a log of a play-by-e-mail game of Castle Arcania that I played against Andy
Sekela. The e-mails have been modified slightly in order to make them more
consistent and to remove irrelevant content, and the Microsoft Word documents we
exchanged have been converted to HTML with a mostly-decent degree of success. There
were no nifty mini-games as there were in our last battle (Revenge of the Red
Dragon), but we used the same Final Conflict Rules document as before (though we
treated it a little differently due to variations in the combat rules of this
book).
Sticking with the 1 on 1 is fine with me. And I think it is a good idea to start
with book 1.
Which character do you want to play? (I was usually the magic-user in D&D, but as
you were the Black Knight the last time, you may not want to play another Knight.)
One thing that is different about Castle Arcania is that we can move our allies
separately from each other. That should prove interesting. Looks like we'll be
using the "play area" a lot more this time.

Your move...
BTW, I should note that the rules for these books unambiguously state that in
combat, all members of the attacking side strike at once, then all members of the
defending side strike. We should probably adjust our playing style accordingly, at
least for this set...
- Demian
I haven't taken my turn yet, but just wanted to mention one thing. I was thinking
of keeping a log of the locations of my allies (if and when they leave the area I'm
in). I'll just make a chart or something that tracks their movement and attach it
to the email. That way, you can look at it if and when you need to.
I read through the rules this morning, and yes I did notice the "change" about the
attacking side. That will actually make it a little easier, and certainly more
clear!!

Yeah, I think some thought does need to be given regarding how we deal with ally
movement... I think the chart is worth having for verification, but if we check the
chart every time we move, we'll know where the allies are and some strategy will be
lost to the game. I think a lot of this actually comes down to an important issue -
when, at the end of the turn, we announce a location, should it be where we are, or
where we're going? If it's where we are, things actually get more complicated than
if it's where we're going... If we say where we're going, then the opponent will
know when one of us walks into an ally-related trap and the combat can be executed
at the proper time (that is, before the events of the room entered). Of course,
there may be some problems with announcing movement in advance... Let me know what
you think. :)

Interesting questions. Here's an excerpt from the rules (top of p. 8 after "The
Map") - "As you move from one area to another, you must tell Eric where you are
going." Based on this, and the fact that combat with allies takes place before
encountering the room, we should announce where we are going to. This may remove a
little of the element of surprise, but I think is the best option.
As for the ally chart, it should not be referred to every time we move, because as
you said some strategy would be lost if we used it every move. It should only be
used if things get confusing and we need to clear things up, It will also serve as
a record of the movement of our allies.
Now I need clarification of one of my ally's abilities. This is for Stasheen the
Thief. She has a sling that she can use on the first 2 combat turns only, for 3 HP
damage per hit. On p. 23, it says (in regards to her sling) "If she hits with the
bullet, it magically does one more hit point of damage (4 hit points damage total)
every turn after that until the battle is over." I take this to mean that she
automatically does an extra 4 HP each successive turn. What's your take on this?
Feel free to look at the Wizard's Book if you need to.

Well, personally, I'm keeping track of all of this on the photocopies of the
character sheets that I've printed out... but, of course, it can be converted into
electronic form and sent to you when necessary... and if I do separate from my
allies, I'll let you know, since you would be tipped off any a face-to-face game by
the bits of paper on the table. :)

BTW, I'll respond to your other rules-related email later. I didn't want to hold up
the game, as it's not really relevant yet.
Andy
1) We won't worry about a file with our allies' movements. We'll just keep track of
it the old fashioned way (i.e., by hand) and just let each other know if we move
into an area occupied by an enemy ally.
2) For Stasheen's ability, we'll go with how it sounds to us. If the sling bullet
hits the first or second turn, it does 4 HP damage automatically each consecutive
turn. (The justification for this seems to be because of the "nasty green liquid"
the sling oozes, apparently some sort of poison.) But this is not cumulative, so if
she hits with it on both the 1st and 2nd turns, it still only does 4 damage (not
8). That seems a little more realistic. Let's hope this is the only ambiguity.

I think we're just keeping track of them ourselves, but if we move them, we'll have
to put "papers" into the play area to indicate how many have moved.

If you still have the Final Battle files from our last game, we should probably use
those same rules for this battle.

Andy
Wait, I'm a little confused about who's encountering who where... :) Would Neves
have encountered my entire party in the Shrine of Set since he was going there
before they had time to leave, or would the party run into whoever is in the Ebony
Catacombs because they're on there way there next turn? I think possibility one
sounds more likely, but you seem to be leaning towards possibility two... it all
comes down to a slightly confusing timing issue.
- Demian
The confusion is my fault, I'm afraid. I misread the rules, but they are stated
quite clearly on p. 11 (of my book) under "Fighting Opponent's Allies". You only
fight allies if you move INTO a location where they already are. So it looks like
we just missed each other.

Actually, I think we did run into each other; my present location on my turn was
where you were moving into on your previous turn, and I don't think I'll actually
officially reach my "moving to" location until after the completion of your turn...
Or do you disagree? :)
- Demian
Oh, boy. Just when I was hoping there wasn't going to be any more ambiguity! Maybe
that's why in the later books they don't deal with moving your allies separately...
Actually, I do agree with you. It seems on your turn 21, you were in the Shrine of
Set. On my turn 21, my allies moved into the Ebony Catacombs. Then you move into
the Catacombs on your turn 22, and - boom! - run into my war party.
BTW, can allies retreat if they're not with the main character??
Andy
Oh, boy. Just when I was hoping there wasn't going to be any more ambiguity! Maybe

Perhaps... Though I think all of this might be less ambiguous if we weren't playing
by e-mail; in person, we wouldn't have "current location" and "moving to;" we'd
just use our memories... :)

Makes sense... and it looks like I have the first strike since for some reason Eric
always does by default. :) Just confirm that this is the case and I'll get the
attack file off to you. :)
BTW, can allies retreat if they're not with the main character??
The rules don't quite seem to cover it... but would it be fair to say that they can
move away one area in place of attacking, but the enemy gets a free attack at them
as a result? That seems to be the standard practice for retreating in most
RPGs... :)
- Demian
Yes, you should get to attack first. And I like you're idea for retreating after
your opponent gets a free attack.

That's what I figured. It just seems Castle Arcania has a less developed storyline

that surprising for the first book in the series.

Before we get started, a quick question. Can I heal my guys (using Ointment,
Potion, or Device) before the battle gets started? Also, I couldn't find it in the
rules, but if you heal during combat does that count as your attack? (It definitely
would for a Spell, as that is clearly stated in the rules.)
I seem to think we've discussed this before, during our last game, but I can't
recall the resolution.
Thanks,
Andy

From looking at the old game log, I don't think we actually did discuss this
issue... I think general wisdom would have it that using healing devices during
combat is impossible, but I'd be fine with you doing it in place of attacking. I
don't think you'd likely have time to do it before the start of battle, however...
though the timing here is always a little questionable. :)
- Demian
I agree that they probably don't have time before the battle starts. The "standard"
convention (for most games) seems to be that you can use an item/drink a potion/
etc. to heal yourself in place of making an attack, so we'll go with that.

One question - how does the turn order come into play? Let's say you inflict 15 hp

I have modified the file. Let's get this over with, and quickly! That shouldn't

You need to assign 13 points of damage (unless any are countered by special

Battle for the Ancient Robot
PBeM Game (3/15/2001 - 7/11/2001)
Here's a log of a play-by-e-mail game of Battle for the Ancient Robot that I played
against Andy Sekela. The e-mails have been modified slightly in order to make them
more consistent and to remove irrelevant content.
Well, it looks like there's less information that we need to communicate for this
adventure. No "moving to" and no "play area" should be necessary. Here's a
suggested order of actions for each turn:

Rules question: I got a special that says Cordon (one of my robots) does double

mean I do four times damage? (It doesn't matter in this case, as the double damage
would have killed them. I was just wondering.)

allow them to attack twice each turn.)

Wait a minute! We're doing this wrong... I don't know why your book tells me to
turn to p.128 of my book, because that's not relevant to the situation at all! You
have to pick the first X, and I have to guess, since I'm playing the ancient
robot... Because of the pointless reference to my book, I thought I was somehow
under attack!
Anyway, I think we should start over, with you placing the first X and me

I agree - I should probably participate. How do you want to handle the combat -
like a "normal" final battle? Or is that overkill?
Well, I think it depends on you. If all you're going to do is attack with the same
weapons every turn, I may as well do it myself and save us some time. If you want
to be sneaky and have some tricks up your sleeve, though, we might as well do it
like a normal final battle... Of course, remember that your tricks (should you have
any) can't involve any of your allies.

I'm just a plain old robot - no tricks up my sleeve! One question, though, concerns
my attacks. I normally make 2 attacks each turn for 3 HP each. But I am now armed
with an energy rifle that does 6 hp per attack, and I gained some knowledge in the
Black Hole that allows me to do an additional 1 HP. So are you fighting the
original E-Ben, or the current E-Ben? I am currently at my max hp (41), so that
doesn't matter either way.

I agree about the extra damage. As for the special weapons, I think we use them
instead of our regular attacks. For me, my description says I have a Heightened
Weapons System, which clearly states it allows me to attack twice per combat turn.
I'm assuming that this means I can attack twice with my Energy Rifle, as the HWS
doesn't say it's limited to my "on-board" weapons systems.

Hmm... my description says I have three attacks per combat round and doesn't
specify that I have to use my throwing stars... but three attacks with that
disintegration ray rifle (which does 9 damage per hit) seems too devastating to be
right. Any thoughts? Feel free to look at my character sheet in the Mikael book if
you want to compare my description to yours...

Since your weapon says "3 Energized Throwing Stars" and you have 3 attacks per
turn, I think the implication is that you get 1 attack with each throwing star. But
it's certainly ambiguous as far as other weapons goes. Maybe it should be something
like 1 attack with the disintegration rifle and 2 attacks with the Throwing Stars
per turn? Also, feel free to look at my description as well.
Andy
I'll attack using two throwing stars and my rifle each turn, while you'll attack
three times with your nifty 6-damage-doing weapon. You're at your full 41 hit
points, right?
If that all sounds good to you, I'll run the combat and let you know if I'm dead or

Andy
Well, I just played out the combat, and I might have won... or I might not. It's
another ambiguity! I killed you and was reduced to 3 hit points. However, along the
way, you had two * results, which I treated as misses since it's not really you and
you don't have a page number to use as a reference for the specials table. However,
if you think these shouldn't have been treated as misses, it's possible that I am
dead. Let me know what you think.

I agree that the * results should be treated as misses, because as you say it isn't
really me. Besides, I want to have the pleasure of defeating you myself - not have

Well, to be consistent with what happened last battle, use my full hit poitns (I'm
currently uninjured) of 44, and have me attack three times per turn -- twice at +1
damage on the combat index listed in your book (due to weapon enhancements) and
once at 9 damage (with my disintegration ray).

Revenge of the Red Dragon
PBeM Game (10/12/2000 - 11/22/2000)
Here's a log of a play-by-e-mail game of Revenge of the Red Dragon that I played
against Andy Sekela. The e-mails have been modified slightly in order to make them
more consistent and to remove irrelevant content, and the Microsoft Word documents
we exchanged have been converted to HTML with a mostly-decent degree of success.
Andy deserves credit for devising all of the fancy rules and tables, which you may
well find useful if you ever try to play this game by e-mail yourself... In case
you don't feel like digging through the e-mails to find them, they are linked here:
(I actually would have chosen the Dragon if it came down to it anyway!) I will move
to Castle Arcania, just for old time's sake (even though I haven't played that book
yet).
I'm sure there's other stuff, but that's what I could think of so far.
Well, I finally got ready to start playing... I think I'm going to save all of the
e-mails of this game so that I can put up a log on my web site when we're done...
assuming that you don't mind, of course. :)
Anyway, on with the game...
Probably goes without saying, but we should probably use d20s to generate numbers
in combat. :) Also, I think it would be helpful to keep a list of what's in the
play area; certain actions require that I write notes and put them on the table, so
to speak, and if we have a status line then we won't lose track of what's out
there.
- Demian
I will start serializing the messages for ease of tracking. If you want to use a
different method, that's fine. Just let me know.
Andy

I fought a Copper Dragon (who had the audacity to move into my territory) in the
Purple Plain. Next turn I will move to the Druid's Grove.
Andy
- Demian
Looks like I'm having all the fun! I battled a Druid at the Druid's Grove. Now I
will move to the Lich's Way.
Andy
- Demian
Demian,
Before I continue, I need resolution on a question. I may have been conducting the
turns improperly. Is your turn over when you announce you are moving into a new
area, or when you need to turn to a new page within that same area? I thought one
turn involved any decisions (incl. fighting) you had to make within one area.
Example: (Feel free to look at the Flametongue book if you need to) # 29 - I enter
the Purple Plain. It asks if I want to attack the copper dragon or continue to
chase after the Knight.
# 84 - I choose to attack the Dragon, and conduct the combat in this section.
# 80 - after defeating the Dragon, I search his lair by going to this section.
After that, I choose the next area to go to.
Should this sequence have been one turn (the way I played it, since it all takes
place in the Purple Plain), or 3 turns???
The rules aren't entirely clear, but they do say if you decide to fight an enemy
you resolve the combat during that movement turn. It says after that you decide
where to go next, but you do not read further until your next turn. I assumed that
"where to go" meant to a new area, and didn't include if you wanted to search for
treasure or something.
Andy

area, or when you need to turn to a new page within that same area? I thought one

Hmm... Tough question; I've been playing this the opposite way from you... Simply
resolving one page and then ending my turn. That seemed the correct way to do
things, since it's sometimes a bit ambiguous as to whether I'm going to a new area
or not; that suggested to me that every page turn, regardless of what's going on,
ends the turn.
Anyway, you're right about the rules being unclear; they're a bit of a mess,
actually... I still don't quite understand the purpose of allies in combat, since
it seems like only one person can attack at a time, and the player character is
generally a better fighter than the allies... but that's another matter
entirely. :)
Regarding the basic turn-taking, I suggest that we do the one page turn equals one
game turn, simply because it's an unambiguous choice, whereas "moving to another
area" can sometimes be a rather fuzzy decision. If you agree to that, let me know
how far ahead you are and I'll catch up with you. :)
- Demian
Demian,
I was afraid we were doing things differently. That would explain why I fought so
many things already! I do agree with you that the least ambiguous method is to go
page-by-page, and that's what we should do.
My last battle against the Crystal Cave Walls in the Lich's Way was page (and
therefore turn) 11 for me, so I'm a good bit ahead of you. I don't know whether
that will impact the game. I wouldn't think it would have too much of an effect.
But we could just start over again if you want, or I'll just wait for you to catch
up.
As far as allies... when my brother and I played we got into the same discussion. I
looked at all the books, and in a couple of them I found a line that says you and
all your allies attack first. So we assumed that you roll for your main character
and any allies first, and then for the monster you're fighting. This gives you an
obvious advantage, but if you didn't allow allies to attack every turn then, like
you said, they wouldn't have much purpose. On the other hand, if you and all your
allies attack first, then there's a good chance you can defeat your opponent before
he even gets a chance to strike back.
How about this - participants on each side alternate attacks until each participant
has attacked once, which concludes one round of combat. For example, you and your
allies (an Elf and a Dwarf) are attacking a Dragon. You attack first. Then the
Dragon attacks. Then the Elf and Dwarf each attack. (If the Dragon had an ally, he
would attack after the Elf and before the Dwarf.) That completes one round. Then
you start the process over again, with you attacking, then the Dragon, etc. What do
you think?
I am sorry for the confusion. I guess we just need to get the bugs worked out. The
next books we play (and I hope we will play again) should go much easier.
Andy
I'm glad you agree on the one-section-at-a-time thing, and I definitely agree with
your suggestion regarding turn-taking in combat... So I think we've worked out all
the eccentricities of the rules... now back to the game...
I'm now caught up, having also played through eleven sections. Along the way to
catch up with you, I battled Wights, a Warlord and his Horse, and a Hordling. It is
now your turn.
- Demian
Yes, I think we're back on track again. (There are definitely some abiguities in
the rules. But with a little common sense and discussion, those are easily
overcome. I still like the overall format and gameplay, though.)
I am still wandering through the Lich's Way. (I never did like those undead types;
they just don't taste as good as you living folk.)
Your turn.
Andy
I've just survived a clash with a Naga and her Stone Warriors. Your move.
Andy
Well, another relatively uneventful turn has gone by... Your move once more. :)

One rules question - If I need to give up a magic item (to gain a benefit in this
case), do Healing Potions count? Technically a potion would be a magic item, but it
seems kind of lame to give up a mere potion. Perhaps it should be something a
little more powerful.
Fiendish lizard!
2) name all your allies and reveal how many hit points each has
Those would be Euras (6 hp), Scorch (7 hp), Phantast (10 hp) and Gridelin, whose
hit points are unknown. Euras is a Djinn, Scorch is an Efreet, Phantast is a
Nightmare, and Gridelin is a Fairy Dragon.
My Ebony Blade, Nightslasher, does nine points of damage outdoors and twelve points
of damage indoors. Don't ask me why, but I can't complain.

Anyway, now that I know everything about you except your mother's maiden name, I
guess we can continue.
Rules Question (hereafter abbreviated "RQ") 2 - (I'll serialize these now as well.)
If I gain an ally (via spell, magic item, etc.) do I need to reveal that? I know
we're not supposed to reveal treasure gained, but I don't know if an ally would fit
into that category.

we're not supposed to reveal treasure gained, but I don't know if an ally would fit
into that category.
I don't think there's any need for you to mention allies gained, unless of course
you've gained an ally by stealing one of mine. :)
In any case, my latest turn is finished... Once again, nothing too notable took
place.
- Demian
I have finally exited the Lich's Way and am now in Deadman's Valley. Nothing else
to report. Your turn.
Andy
I just vanquished a wizard who managed to resist my darkness power (which allows me
to convert an enemy to an ally). It's now your turn.
- Demian
I'll let you know my ideas for our inevitable combat after I've had a chance to
think through them a bit.
Andy
- Demian
I just defeated a rather nasty Skeletal Priest in Deadman's Valley. I am now headed
to the Wizard's Tower.
Andy
By the way, I think I have my suggestion for our combat worked out. I'll email it
to you tomorrow. Basically, it will consist of a table in a Word document. At the
beginning of every round, we'll each write in what each of our characters will do.
We'll take turns fighting each round (i.e., I'll fight one round, rolling for both
your and my characters; then you'll fight the next round; etc.). This may take
time, but as it is likely to be the final conflict, it will probably be worth it.
Of course, after you see the final document, it should be a little clearer. And
this is just my first suggestion; I won't be offended if you don't like it or want
to try something else.
My latest turn has passed rather uneventfully (though it smells kinda funky). Your
move once more. :)
BTW, your final combat suggestion sounds good, though I'll be better able to
comment when I see your Word document. :)
- Demian
Looks like this turn will be interesting. I just moved to the Wizard's Tower, and
we have to play a game. You can turn to 116 to look at the rules. I have an idea on
how we can play, and will send you a spreadsheet or something later on today.
Andy
Here's the rules I came up with for the Shields and Eggs game (p. 116). Let me know
what you think. We have to agree before we can proceed.

I just got your suggestions, and they all sound good... As per your instructions
for Shields & Eggs, I've created a Knight file and am now ready for your first
move.
- Demian
Attached is the Game File with my chosen Shields. I added a couple lines to keep
track of how many unmarked Shields and Eggs we have found, as appropriate.

3
I also kept the rules on the document, rather than deleting them. I had to refer to
them a couple times.
Andy
You didn't do too well... Your first move was successful, but you hit an X on your
second move. Thus, you lose five hit points and gain nothing, though your next
unmarked square will earn you a potion.

Now I don't feel so bad; you (or, at least, the wizard you're playing; I don't want
to offend your sneaky little "big bad" Black Knight) struck out on the first one.
Here's my next "move." I updated the game file, and I think it's pretty clear.

By the way, we can pick new eggs/shields each turn. My intention was we wouldn't
have to continue with any left over from the last turn (unless you think we
should).

Well, looks like you did the same thing on your second attempt... so take a bit
more damage. My next try is attached... a risky gambit, perhaps. :)

OUCH!! That hurt! I can't take much more of this. But at least there's only one
more marked shield.
You got 3 unmarked eggs before you hit the marked one. Here's the updated file and
my next selections.

Well, you got two unmarked squares before hitting my final X.. So you win a healing
potion but lose five hit points. My next move is attached... Since you've hit all
of my X's, if you survive my latest assault, there's no need for you to mail me the
file back; you can't possibly miss from here on out. :)

An excellent choice - your first move was one of my marked eggs! Phew!!! Now this
game is finally over (as you said, my next choices will automatically be unmarked).
So I collect (and quickly consume) the 3 healing potions, and finally end my turn.
Here is the final game file. I know you don't need it, but it may be good if you're
archiving all of the stuff from our game.

Well, I've really done it this time! Stuck my sword in the wrong lake, and now
you've been teleported into combat with me! You're now at the Enchanted Lake, and
you can't retreat due to the magical nature of your appearance. If I am to
understand the rules correctly, you always get initiative over me, and under the
circumstances I imagine we're both about equally surprised at the turn of events...
So I guess your best bet is to send over your instructions for the first attack!
Curses! I haven't had time to finish my plans, silly Knight. But so be it... I look
forward to your downfall!!!
I'll need a day or two to finish up the 2-player rules. I'll send them to you for
your review after I've done the first draft. Of course, once we get them done,
we'll be able to use them in all the other books.

I looked up a couple things in the Black Knight's book, namely the effect of a
couple spells you cast. Please feel free to do the same. As there are a lot of
special rules and circumstances, we can either include them in the game file (and
add time to the process) or just refer to the other book as needed. I recommend the
latter. If either of us use an object we found along the way (eg. the Iron Statue),
we can provide info on that object as required.

Well, that was quick! I just got splattered all about the landscape. :) First, your

Challenge of Druid's Grove
PBeM Game (1/15/2002 - 3/10/2002)
I (or Renwood, I guess) go first. I took my first turn (shouldn't be any harm in
that, I don't think; I want to get the game going!). I read "The adventure
begins..." page and then turned to the first encounter.
I don't know what format to use for our turn reports. It doesn't appear we have to
tell each other where we are, as in some of the previous books.
Andy
Well, I found my Ar-Kane book. It looks like we still have to report our locations,
so I think a "current location / moving to" turn report format makes the most
sense. So for your first turn, would you mind sending me a report with your current
location (wherever you are in "the adventure begins") and your moving to (the
location related to the number you first chose). I don't think you should actually
read the result of your first choice until I've made my first choice.
One other complication -- this book doesn't provide hit points for monsters when
they're encountered; it's supposed to be kept secret to increase the strategy
involved in retreating. I don't think there's really any good way of working around
this problem, though, so we may have to sacrifice that feature in the interest of
making e-mail play run smoothly. Any thoughts?

Yes, I was mistaken. (I noticed that when I re-read the rules last night). I will
send you a new email with the correct form.

I agree; there's no way around this. You can look up the enemy's hit points in the
Renwood book. When I fight, you can just email me my enemy's hit points since I
still don't have the Ar-Kane book (though I did ask my brother to send it to me).
Andy
1.) Both books say "You go first." So I don't know who is actually supposed to make
the first move.
2.) My primary weapons (magical daggers of light) don't indicate how much damage
they inflict upon a successful hit! Rather important information to omit, I'd say!
- Demian
They are pretty significant problems!! I hoped by the fourth book some of these
ambiguities would be fixed!
As for who goes first, you may as well go. (Six in one; half-dozen in the other.)
As for your primary weapons, that's a tough one... Do they have any special powers?
For reference, I can throw 2 darts a turn, each of which inflict 6 HP. But I only
have 4 darts (though they are reusable), so I can really only attack with them on
two turns during any battle. How many daggers do you have? Do you throw them or
attack in melee?
Andy

They obviously didn't have very thorough copy editors. To be fair, though, I think
certain areas of the rules looked less ambiguous than before (it is very explicit,
for example, that players take turns reading one page, not exploring one area -- I
don't think this was entirely clear in the past, since I remember it confusing us
at one point).

Weapon: Two Magical Daggers of Light, Bright Beam and Quick Ray. When used against
any creatures larger than man-size, the daggers glow brightly, often blinding an
enemy and impairing his fighting ability. (No enemy can score a "2X" against you
when you use these daggers. Count "2X" as "X".) When using daggers, you cannot use
spells.
Oh, and speaking of spells, is it just me, or are the first level spells more
powerful than many of the higher-level ones? :)

Yes, that was confusing in previous books. I hope they did clean things up a bit!
Here's what it says: [snip]
I'm reaching back a bit here, but I think my brother and I played that each dagger
did 3 or 4 HP damage if it hit, and you could attack twice per turn (i.e., once
with each dagger).
That's not really a disadvantage. I have the same thing - I can either attack with
my darts or use spells. I think it's the same as in most games - you can attack OR
cast spells, but not both in one turn.

Sounds fair to me. But which should it be? 3 or 4 damage? Should we flip a coin? :)

Of course, that makes a lot of sense. I was misinterpreting the rule to mean that
during a given battle (rather than a given turn, which is a more sensible
interpretation), you could only use daggers or spells but not both.
- Demian

How about this... If the first one hits its 4 hp, and if the second one hits it
causes 3 hp.

The Pyrohydra has five heads, each doing 3 Hit Points of damage by fire. The
creature gets one attack, and if it is successful, each head breathes fire. Every 7
Hit Points of damage done by the Druid and his allies put another head out of
action so that it can no longer breathe fire.

Are you sure you're determining the results correctly? You shouldn't be rolling
them; the character bookmark tells you which one to use based on your current page
number, and then you add on to that for each subsequent event during the fight.
Assuming you're doing this correctly, though, I'd say you definitely should count
it even if it's a repeat. :)

I understand what you're saying. The first special result was in area 80. On a
different turn, I got a special result in area 40. Both of those special results
direct me "specials" # 10, which says I found a treasure trove. Is it reasonable
that I found the same treasure trove in two different areas? Per the rules, it is
possible. It just may not make the most sense.
Encounter #92 is "Tree Warrior" in my book -- 25 HP, 5 damage. Does that sound
wrong?

That's pretty vague, isn't it? How about, to compromise, it does 4 HP damage to the
whole group, but at least 1 point to each person (i.e., if you have more than four

Two questions:
1) I can't remember how we do it. Do we alternate each character, or do all
characters on one side go first, and then the other side?
2) I want to call the Pixie to my side. I think I can do this as the battle starts,
but it's kind of a gray area. Please refer to page 88 of Renwood's book. It says I
can call the Pixie after you've had one battle. Does that mean I can call him any
time after that first encounter, or I have to call him after the first one (before

Very well. I summon the Pixie to my side. In case you gave him any objects, he
brings them with him. He has however many hit points he had with you (up to 5,

I didn't even get a chance to do anything with him, so he has full hit points and
all arrows.
I don't think we actually have to worry about terribly complicated combat rules for
this one. I'll just type a chart in the e-mail. This way we can keep our hit points
secret and increase the suspense. :)
note: I just summoned the Wind Spirit this turn; if you don't think it can attack

about it. The question, though, is does it stop spellcasting or only physical
attacks? Any thoughts?

How about just physical attacks? So let's say you can still cast spells or use
objects. That will at least somewhat balance out this powerful spell.

Subject: Re: Final Battle Turn 3
Do the insects do two damage per player per turn, or just two damage per turn?
Andy
Sounds good to me. You should probably remind me about this, though, just in case I
forget. Anyway, here's the next assault:
1. Ar-Kane, cast Monster Summon III: success -- Giant Snapping Turtle summoned.
2. Elf Warrior, attack! hit for 7 damage
3. Swiftwing the Griffon, attack! hit for 10 damage, miss.
4. Brett the Bowman, confused! (turn 1 of 3)
5. Wind Spirit, attack! miss.
6. Giant Snapping Turtle, attack! miss.
Over to you!
- Demian
1. Renwood, casts Call Woodland Beings: Special! Your side takes 7 hp of damage,
but each of my allies are also struck and lose 1 hp each.
2. Berk the Buckawn, attacks: hit (2x)! On a 2x, the drugged dart he uses puts one
enemy to sleep for the rest of the battle.
3. Soral the Swanmay, attacks: Special! (no effect)
4. Verdure Lath, Ranger, attacks: miss!
5. Pixie, fires War arrow: miss!
Your move,
Andy
1. Ar-Kane, cast Fear: success -- one character on your side permanently flees the
battle.
2. Elf Warrior, attack! miss.
3. Swiftwing the Griffon, attack! miss. miss.
4. Brett the Bowman, drugged! (out of fight)
5. Wind Spirit, attack! miss.
6. Giant Snapping Turtle, attack! 2X hit! 16 damage.
Your move.
- Demian
I'm getting desperate here. Time to pull out all the stops (or at least some of
them...).
1. Renwood, casts Wall of Fire: Hit! Does 9 hp damage to each enemy. It will work
every combat turn, provided Renwood does nothing else. (I still have to roll each
turn to see if it hits.)
2. Berk the Buckawn: Runs away (due to Fear spell).
3. Soral the Swanmay, attacks: hit! 8 damage.
4. Verdure Lath, Ranger, attacks: miss!
5. Pixie, fires Sleep arrow: miss!
You also lose 2 hp from the summoned insects. (Since Berk, the caster of the spell,
ran away, is the spell still in effect?)
One other question - Wall of Fire - do I need to roll to see if it hits for EACH
enemy, or do I just roll once for your group as a whole?
Your move,
Andy

I think it hits the group as a whole. In any case, doesn't make much difference.
You've wiped me out utterly! Victory is yours!

I have a couple healing potions and spells. Do I have time to use them?
It seems to me that our fight wasn't very well balanced. I didn't even use two of
my most powerful items - the Hammer of Summoning (p. 78) and the Oaken Wand (p.
137). Did I just find more stuff than you did??

I found a lot of stuff, but it all happened to be pretty useless. :) In any case, I
think if I'd just pounded you with magic missiles instead of trying to be more
clever, I'd probably have won. ;)
Anyway, let me know how your confrontation with the big bad guy turns out.

Actually, I'll need your help in the battle, since I still don't have the Ar-Kane
book. It's encounter # 128.
Andy
The Earth Spirit has 61 hit points and does 14 points of damage per hit. Lath's
body has 35 hit points and casts spells as described in encounter 117 in your own
book. It may be an oversight, but the encounter in my book doesn't say anything
about his body crumbling to dust like yours does.

So it looks like they make 2 attacks against me each turn - one from Lath's body,
and one from the Earth Spirit. I'll play out the fight at my leisure; it doesn't
need to interfere with the start of our next game.

The battle is over, and I defeated the evil that infested the Grove. It wasn't a
very long battle, actually - only 3 rounds. That was largely due to Roht, the
hammer warrior. I summoned him on the first round; he had 30 hp and automatically
hit (for 14 hp damage) each round. Pretty powerful. I also had an Oaken Wand from
137, which did double damage against creatures in the Inner Sanctuary (i.e., the
Evil Spirit and Lath).
They are moot points now, but there were actually several questions I had during
the battle:
1) How is damage allocated between Lath and the Evil Spirit? I just split the
damage 50-50.
2) Would the Pixie's Confusion or Sleep arrows work on these guys? It just seemed a
little silly that those arrows could take down something as powerful as these
monsters, so I just had the Pixie fire War Arrows.
3) Before the battle, Soral changed into swan form. When in swan form, any spell
cast against her with a "2x" result counts as a miss. If Lath had rolled a 2x
against me in the battle (which he didn't), would the spell have been nullified?
Andy

Congratulations! :)
1) How is damage allocated between Lath and the Evil Spirit? I just split the

Well, if we had been playing "live," I would have been in control of the bad guys,
and thus I think it would have been left to my discretion. I would probably have
split the damage to keep both of them alive as long as possible, but you never
know, really. :)

Dragonsword of Lankhmar
PBeM Game (3/10/2002 - 6/6/2002)
Great! It definitely does look like we may finally be getting a change of pace.
The format does seem different than previous games. It also looks like we don't
have to give out our locations, either. There are specific times when you can try
to guess my location, so I guess that's half the "fun".
It looks like I go first in our next book. I read "The Adventure Begins", so it's

Stop the presses!! As I was about to deal a killing blow to some White Warriors, I
rolled a Special result. This sent me running, and I am now on my way to Countess
Kronia's estate. You must immediately abandon any encounter and turn to page 62
(hope that's the right page #!) in your book.

Okay, I've read page 62. It tells me to pick a location and see if you're there,

62, I guess that makes it your turn now. After that, though, I'm moving to the
Entertainment Area, so let me know if you're there!
- Demian
We may have an ambiguity in timing here. I am outside the entrance to the estate,
and haven't chosen a location yet. So do I need to pick a location and carry that
out first, and then you get to see if I'm there?

Yeah, this is a little confusing in terms of timing. Sounds like you do need to

The Amber Sword of World's End
PBeM Game (6/7/2002 - 10/3/2002)
Here's a log of a play-by-e-mail game of The Amber Sword of World's End that I
played against Andy Sekela. The e-mails have been modified and reordered slightly
in order to make them more readable and to remove irrelevant content.
I'd be happy to move on to the next book in the series (Amber Sword of World's End)
as long as you don't mind me being kind of slow. We've been through this before, so
I assume it won't be a problem. :)
Not a problem at all. I just have one request - do you care which character you
play? I would definitely prefer Garth the Monk. My favorite (and highest level) d&d
character was a monk, and that class holds a "special" place in my heart.

<muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Sun, Aug 19, 2007 at 10:12 PM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>
I'm in Brooklyn. I have two Mandroids and two Doomdroids on this mission. Because
Doctor Doom can't go on every mission, he's sitting this one out.
I forgot to ask, do you want to use the Karma Points? I personally think they're a
pain to deal with. Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 8:53 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>
I sent the Human Torch to Brooklyn... and I'm fine with skipping Karma Points.

Wow, I'm off to a roaring start. OK, I think you attack first! Demian Katz
<demiankatz@gmail.com> Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 4:39 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>
According to my rules, I'm always the Defender first in situations where Doom is
involved... but if Doom himself isn't there, I guess that means I get to go first.
Might as well open with a Nova Blast, doing 15 damage to all opponents
automatically and negating armor values. If you want to resolve the rest of the
attack using dice to save time, that's fine with me... I'm forced to retreat if I
take 20+ points of damage, however. Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>
Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 8:38 PM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>
OK, since you used your Nova Blast, I'm going to assume that you no longer have
armor, since your armor is generated by your flames. If that doesn't sound right,
let me know.
Your turn. Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Fri, Aug 24, 2007 at 8:02 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>
Actually, now that I read more carefully, this was a foolish strategy -- I'm
completely unable to fight further after my nova blast, so I must retreat. The
rules are unclear about whether or not using the nova blast actually puts out my
flames, though -- I'll leave it to your call whether or not I can claim my armor
bonus against this damage.
Anyway, unless there's something you can do to prevent my retreat, I think this
concludes our first battle. Let me know what you think I should do about the armor
situation, and then I guess I'll continue with my turn.... Christopher Bynum
<muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Fri, Aug 24, 2007 at 9:55 PM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>
I'm in no shape to stop you from retreating. Your Nova Blast hit me pretty hard.
Unfortunately I don't have my FF book, so I can't check on the rules for the Nova
Blast. When Alana used Nova Blast, she and I agreed that the Torch could not use
his flames for weapons or armor until the next combat encounter. Thankfully, I
don't have any combat after fighting you, so my turn is over. Demian Katz
<demiankatz@gmail.com> Sat, Aug 25, 2007 at 7:27 AM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>
Sounds like a fair ruling -- in any case, doesn't make any difference for this
week, since I have now completed the week with no further combat, and the end-of-
week healing puts me back in full health either way.
My week two assignments have been made -- let me know where you strike next!

It's on! Quick question: when I attack you, do I determine the attacker and
defender numbers? Not clear on that. But if that is the case, I have hit you using
the Torch Foam device (check the last page of your Doom book, if you have it). On a
successful hit, this puts out the Torch's flames until he gets a * on the combat
table. I think that it should be a 2X or a *, in my opinion; that's a pretty
powerful device. Let me know if that works or not. Demian Katz
<demiankatz@gmail.com> Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 6:45 AM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>
I think it's easiest if you determine attacker and defender numbers with a d20 --
keeps things moving. I'm also certainly not going to object if you let a 2X work to
cancel the effect of the device. As you say, that is awfully powerful! In any case,
I have scored a Miss result for this turn, so I'll put it back in your court. If
you want to handle my rolls as well until I get my powers back (or get defeated),
go ahead... I have no other options at the moment, so you might as well resolve it
on my behalf. Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at

As far as when to make assignments go, I think I always have to make my assignments
before yours. The procedure is I make assignments, you make assignments, then you
announce your location. So I don't think there's any harm in either of us making
our assignments before the other has completed the week as long as you don't make
your announcement until I've had time to assign my forces appropriately. If you'd
still rather I wait to assign until you've completed everything, I have no problem

I haven't reached the end of the first week yet. For each turn, I've just been
reading one page and noting down the next choice I plan to make. Am I falling
behind somehow? Also, are we skipping karma points again this game? I have been
ignoring them so far, but I can keep track if you want (doesn't really matter to me
-- but probably keeps things quicker if we ignore them). Christopher Bynum

Funny you should do that, since I was about to spring such an attack on you in my
next turn anyway! I don't see a rule specifying who strikes first, but it seems
reasonable that you should get the first hit in, so I've taken my 5 points.

I rolled a special, but I'm not sure what page I am technically on. If I had
initiated combat, I would be on page 132, which gives me a special attack yielding
triple damage -- 18 points. However, since you initiated combat, perhaps I'm
actually supposed to be on a different page. Could you double-check? Christopher
Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com> Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 9:35 AM
To: Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com>
I think this is a glitch in the books. Nowhere in my text does it say to tell the
Kingpin reader that it's time to start the final battle and to turn to page such
and such in their book.
The way I interpret it, we should both turn to the pages in our books that have the
text for the final battle. So I think your special for triple damage should count.
Unfortunately for me, that means game over. A triple damage and a double damage hit
in the same fight.........well played, sir.
That was fun. I think the DD vs. Kingpin game is structured much better than the
FF/Doom game, so the pacing is better. Demian Katz <demiankatz@gmail.com> Thu, Apr
23, 2009 at 5:57 PM
To: Christopher Bynum <muppetman2005@hotmail.com>
That came down to sheer luck in the end -- I only had 10 hit points, so it wouldn't
have taken much to beat me! I agree that it was a major improvement over the
previous set -- it was more focused and had the right tone.
Your Winner - The Kingpin (Demian)!
