Honoring Vicky Sycip Herrera ’68: Teacher, Guidance Counselor, Mentor, Friend

“Vicky has touched the lives of so many people, and however hard we try, words cannot do justice to how much she has
impacted the lives of past and present members of the community”, writes Alex Eduque ’09. Vicky’s office has been a
sanctuary for many of us: students, parents, colleagues. Her advice and candor has encouraged, motivated and kept
most of us on the right path, even when we felt like giving up. She has been a mother figure, a counselor, a teacher, a
co-worker, even a match-maker; but more importantly, Vicky has been a friend to each of us. This school year, 2010-
2011, marks Vicky’s final year in her current position as High School guidance counselor she will be retiring in June. The
bitter-sweet emotions that many of our students, parents, faculty and alumni feel can be heard in the mountain of
messages the school has received in recognition of her service.

Vicky’s relationship with our school began as a Grade 2 student in Ms. Miller’s class on the Donada campus (of the
American School as it was then known) in 1957. Graduating in 1968, Vicky went on to study at the University of the
Philippines. In 1973, Vicky would return to school but this time as an English Literature teacher. It wasn’t until 1975,
after the birth of her twin daughters that Vicky returned from maternity leave to assume her guidance counseling
position: a position she has held for the past 38 years.

One alumnus remarked, Vicky has been, “the perfect guidance counselor, friend and mentor. She treated each of us
with such personal attention. I am the person I am today in great part due to Vicky’s love and caring attention, her
strength and her continued friendship.” The list of dedications we have received all reiterate the same feelings. The IS
Manila community has been truly distinguished by having Vicky as part of our faculty.

In commemoration of her service to our community, we have established the Vicky Sycip Herrera Scholarship fund in her
honor. Many of you will know of this program, which seeks to fund local national students of exceptional ability but
whose parents lack the financial capacity to fund an education at IS Manila. Presently, the school supports four Scholars
in each Grade from 8 to 12. Vicky’s Scholar would be the fifth such. These students all pass through an elaborate
selection process involving standardized assessment tests, essays and psychological evaluations as well as a
comprehensive means test to ascertain the family’s financial circumstances. Since 1967, our Filipino Scholarship
Program has changed the lives of over 150 students – and often the lives of their families as well. The list of
accomplishments and achievements of these Scholars is remarkable.

And although the Scholars have gained immeasurably from an ISM education, it is worth noting that they have the given
much back to the School. Listen to Vicky’s own assessment of the value that they have added: “I was aware of the
Filipino Scholarship Program when it started way back in 1961; this was when the first batch of Scholars started in what
was then called Junior High (Grade 7). They graduated in 1967, and the second batch of scholars was in my class of
1968. Since then, I’ve had the honor of getting to know just about every Filipino Scholar in 44 graduating classes – and
oh, how they’ve raised the bar at ISM – not just in the classroom but in extra-curricular activities as well! The Scholars
have played a huge role in making our School the success it is today.”

What better way could there be of recognizing Vicky’s unique contribution to IS Manila than to help expand our
Scholarship program in her name! We ask each of you to make a pledge to this cause such that we can establish an
endowment fund large enough to provide for the continuing tuition and support of an additional, truly deserving Filipino
Scholar. Of course we recognize that, in making this appeal, we shall receive donations both small and large. We plan
to recognize those who make substantial contributions on a special board of honor located prominently in the school.
Please think carefully about this giving opportunity. Not only will your generosity open up a life-changing pathway to an
international school education and beyond, it will also help keep Vicky’s legacy alive for future generations of students.

FEES POLICIES
1. Tuition Fees: Payable in advance for the whole year or per semester. Quarterly payments can also be arranged but
have an additional charge of US$100 per quarter. For quarterly payments, post-dated checks are required to be
submitted at the time of enrollment. The USD portion should be paid in US dollars and the PhP portion should be paid
in Philippine pesos to eliminate conversion costs. Payments that are not in the prescribed currency will be converted
as appropriate based on the school exchange rate, which includes a mark-up to cover the currency conversion costs.

2. Only the Tuition Fees may be paid by the semester or quarter. All other fees must be paid in full on the due date. An
additional one per cent (1%) surcharge per month is added on all school fees that remain unpaid after the due dates.

3. Matriculation Fee: For all NEW students entering Grades Kindergarten and above; is required to hold a place, and
should be paid in full upon acceptance. Refund of the matriculation fee will only be made in case of cancellation of the
application or acceptance, or the child does not physically enroll. Students who have paid this fee, withdraw and
subsequently return to the School are covered by the following guidelines (based on withdrawal date) :
3.1 If a student is withdrawn for 0 – 12 months, no matriculation fee shall be paid upon re-enrollment.
3.2 If a student is withdrawn for more than 12 months up to 24 months, 50% of the matriculation fee shall be paid
upon re-enrollment
3.3 If a student is withdrawn for more than 24 months, full matriculation fee shall be paid upon re-enrollment.

4. Facilities Upgrade Deposit: For all NEW students entering Grades Kindergarten and above; should be paid in full upon
acceptance. A certificate of deposit will be issued to confirm payment of the FUD. The FUD is FULLY refundable upon
receipt of a written request and return of the duly endorsed Certificate of Deposit, when the student withdraws from
the School with proper clearance.

5. Application Fee: For all NEW students; should be paid in full upon submission of application. This is non-refundable
and non-transferable.

6. For NEW PRE-SCHOOL students, a $1,000 non-refundable, non-transferable reservation fee, deductible from the
annual tuition fee due, must be paid upon acceptance to guarantee the place in the pre-school program for the SY
2011-12.  The tuition and all other fees must be paid prior to the student starting class. If the expected enrollment date
is deferred to beyond the beginning of the new school year, then all school fees must be fully paid prior to the
beginning of the new school year to guarantee and hold the seat.

7. Refund of school fees in case of student withdrawal will not be pro-rated for part of a quarter, regardless of the
number of days attended.

8. A re-enrollment deposit payment is not required to reserve a space at the School for SY2011-12. However, parents are
obligated to inform the School in writing, before the second Friday of May 2011 if their children will withdraw at the
end of the academic year 2010-11. There is a WITHDRAWAL NOTIFICATION FORM for such purpose and this must be
submitted to the Admissions Office before the second Friday of May of each school year. Failure to do so will lead to a
deduction of US$1,000 from the Facilities Upgrade Deposit (FUD), in compensation for having held a space for the
child and thus preventing the School from offering that space to another child prior to the summer holiday break.
9. Please take note that the School shall take action to suspend the student’s right to attend classes and other school
activities for those students whose school fees remain unpaid by end of August for the first semester, and end of
January for the second semester. It shall likewise suspend the student’s right to receive report cards or transcript of
records while the student’s account remains unpaid. Moreover, this may result in forfeiture of the student’s place or
reservation for the next school year.

10. For check payments, over-the-counter bank payments and wire transfers, kindly indicate the STUDENT’S NAME AND
TELEPHONE NUMBER. Please provide the School with a copy of the deposit slip or bank advice, where applicable, for
prompt credit to the student’s account. Following are the bank options:

11. All School fee money transactions at the ISM campus are done at the Cashier’s window, Business Office area.

12. Checks will no longer be accepted from those who have issued CHECKS DISHONORED by banks for insufficient funds,
closed accounts, and other reasons. Likewise, peso checks will no longer be accepted after the second Friday of May
and US$ checks drawn from US banks will no longer be accepted after the second Friday of April for each school year.

13. Pro-Rating Fees: Most students attend ISM for the entire school year. There are, however, new students who enter ISM
after the start of a school year. For NEW students ENTERING ISM after the start of a semester, the Tuition Fee is pro-
rated as follows:

14. These policies may be revised at any time during the school year, at the discretion of the Board of Trustees and the
School Administration.

Dear Parents,

In line with the forthcoming graduation of our seniors, we are preparing the return of the Facilities Upgrade Deposit (FUD) of
$5,000.00 paid at the time your child entered International School Manila, Inc.

To enable us to release the refund on June 30, 2011 onwards may we remind you of the following:
1. Submission of the Facilities Upgrade Deposit (FUD) duly endorsed by the holder of the certificate. The refund in
the form of check will be made payable to the holder’s name indicated in the certificate.
2. Clearance for the textbooks to be accomplished the last day of school.
3. Full settlement of all outstanding balance on clearance day

This does not apply to ADB and US Embassy sponsor students.

Re-Enrollment information for RETURNING STUDENTS for SY2011-12
Re-Enrollment requirements for all returning students will include, minimally, submission of an updated Health Form
or Physical Form (depending on grade level) to the Clinic for a Clearance Signature and a Clearance Signature from the
Cashier’s Office on the Re-Enrollment Form.

The Re-Enrollment Form and other requested forms for each re-enrolling student will be available by the beginning of
April online from our website under Admission and Re-Enrollment & Withdrawal or at the Admission Office during
office hours (Monday to Friday; 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). Parents may pick up a set of Re-Enrollment Forms personally
or your child can come to the Admission Office and get the forms. If you would like to have your driver or househelp
pick up the forms, please give them a letter of authorization to collect the Re-Enrollment Forms for your
child/children.

For STUDENTS NOT RETURNING next school year (Does not apply to graduating seniors)
If your child(ren) will not be returning to ISM for the 2011-12 school year, please inform the Admission Office as soon
as possible if you have not already done so. Parents are obliged to officially inform the School in writing on a
WITHDRAWAL NOTIFICATION FORM, before the second Friday of May, if their children will be withdrawn. Failure to
do so will lead to a deduction of US$1,000 from the Facilities Upgrade Deposit (FUD), in compensation for having held
a space for the child and thus preventing the School from offering that space to another child prior to the summer
holiday break. The Withdrawal Notification Form can be obtained from the Admission Office or from the ISM website
under the Admission tab and then click on Re-Enrollment & Withdrawal.

We currently have very few families indicating that they will not be returning and consequently there are an ever
growing number of applicants in a WAITPOOL for possible openings. This is causing great distress and anxiety in those
families (and in the Admission Office). If you are sure that your child will be leaving ISM, please submit a Withdrawal
Notification Form. This will be a great help for our planning and to the many families waiting to be admitted to the
school. Thank you.

IASAS 3rd Season information:
ISM Bearcats had a great 3 rd season to conclude the school IASAS year of events. Here at ISM we proudly hosted the Badminton
tournament and received fantastic support from our school community with full gyms and plenty of cheering fans to support the
high level of Badminton on display from all teams. ISM Badminton teams played well against tough opposition with the boys team
placing 4th and the girls team taking out the Bronze medal this year. A great effort on home turf for our teams and the ISM girls also
won the sportsmanship award.

Our Softball teams played magnificently in Jakarta to capture the Gold medal in both the boys and girls competition. This was the
first time the ISM boys team has won the IASAS Softball title and for the girls the last victory was way back in 1988. To do it both in
the same year is incredible and the school is extremely proud of all the players and coaches.

Track at Bangkok was a tough event for all participants with temperatures over 40 degrees to endure on the first couple of days.
ISM boys finished in 4 th place overall and the girls took home the Bronze medal at this year’s Track championships. ISM athletes
achieved quite a number of personal bests with school records broken at this meet along with a new IASAS record by Prerna
Bhargava in the girls 1500m event with a time of 4.56.27.

Dear Grade 10 and 11 students,

Are you ready for the REAL WORLD?

How would you like to spend 4 days (June 13, 14, 15, and 16) right after school finishes learning more about a
company/industry/career that you are curious about…and maybe even getting a bit of work experience at the same time.

Welcome to
The Bearcat Summer Internship Program
As you all know well, high school for students is (among many things) a time of self-discovery. It is a time where you
begin to better acknowledge your aptitudes/likes, where you hone your strengths and where you begin to sort through
that rather complicated map know as your educational and future career path. Unfortunately, it is often a map with gaps
between what you learn in your “academic” classrooms and the “real world” your teachers are working to prepare you for.

In short, we hope to help bridge that gap for selected ISM students through a four day summer internship/job shadow
placement right after high school finishes in June with various companies in the Metro Manila area. During this 4 day
internship, you would essentially work (without pay of course) at a particular company, handling various level
appropriate responsibilities and/or job shadowing a selected employee(s).

Current companies that have signed up and will be offering internships/job shadowing opportunities to our ISM students
include (among others):

If you are interested in possibly being selected for an internship/job shadow placement please

FROM THE BRITISH COUNCIL:

British Council Philippines, together with British Airways, is offering an opportunity for one high school student to join a 3-
week Summer School at St. Edmund’s College for free!

The contest is open to Philippine passport holders aged 12-15 years old by January 1, 2011.  Interested participants need
to submit a 300 to 500-word essay on the topic “Why do I want to go to the UK” along with a copy of their passport to the
British Council. All entries must be received by 5.30pm on Friday, 6 May. Entries will be judged according to content, style
and organization.

Five finalists will be selected after the first round and will be invited for an interview by a judging panel before a winner is
announced by 16 May. The British Council will provide return airfare, refund of visa processing fee and tuition for the
summer school.
