With a shout of "Here we go!", Yuri Gagarin lifted off into space aboard the Vostok I at 9:07 a.m.
Moscow time on April 12, 1961 and approximately 12 minutes later, the first human being was in orbit around the
Earth. His flight lasted 108 minutes.
82
When Yuri Gagarin said goodbye to his family and prepared to leave the planet, there was still enormous
uncertainty. No one knew precisely what would happen to a human being in space. How would the body react to the
extreme changes in temperature? How would the mind deal with the psychological tension? With a technical
failure, Gagarin could never be back to Earth.
83
At a speed of more than 17,000 miles per hour, the 27-year-old Soviet cosmonaut circled the Earth. He
also became the first person to eat and drink in weightlessness. From his window in space, Gagarin had a view of
Earth that no human had before. The first words spoken from space were: "I see Earth. It's so beautiful!"
84
Gagarin's flight attracted worldwide attention and made him a hero. In a telegram to Moscow, U.S. President
John F. Kennedy wrote, "The people of the United States share with the people of the Soviet Union their satisfaction for
the safe flight of the astronaut in man's first venture into space. We congratulate you and the Soviet scientists
and engineers who made this feat possible. ..."
85
The pioneer cosmonaut could have fulfilled his ambition of making a new space flight if the tragic accident
had not occurred. He died in a plane crash on a routine training flight in March 1968. After his death, his
hometown of Gzhatsk was renamed Gagarin, and the Cosmonaut Training Center at Star City, Russia, was given
the name of this national hero.

Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades. Fortunately, most educators are
becoming aware of the fact that students have different interests and abilities. However, the regimentation
resulting from grades still exists. Grades often stifle creativity. Competing for better grades causes many
students to turn down opportunities to pursue music, dramatics and sports. Grades impose an arbitrary
standard of success on everyone. I do not demand as some extremists do, that grades be abolished
immediately. However, I do believe that less emphasis should be placed on grades. I hope that someday
grades will become optional at Village High School.
Let's face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic functions. First, grades motivate students to
work at their highest level of competence. Second, they act as a reward for hardworking students and as a
reprimand to students who do not work hard. Finally, grades are used as an effective standard by which to
measure student achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university. I've spoken
with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired primarily on the basis
of their grades. My grades helped me land a part-time job and will help me get into university next year. I
think grades are extremely important at Village High School.

(Suggestion)
Many species are now in danger of becoming extinct. Among the threats to endangered species are
businesses
that buy and sell animals for their skin, fur and other parts.
Unfortunately, the people who run these businesses are not discouraged by fines. A better way to control the
problem would be to force whoever is caught buying or selling products made from endangered species to do
community service.
The community service should require work that helps protect the animals they are harming. This service might
help people understand how destructive their business is. It would also turn them into helpers rather than
destroyers. So community service would be an effective way to protect endangered species.
