“My Globalization Story”

From the story of Gio and Latif we can easily notice that globalization occurs in the
story wherein two people from different country which has different culture shared and adopt
each other’s culture. To the first interaction of globalization starts on the spread of the Filipino
telenovela “Pangako Sa’yo” that has been broadcast all over the Asian countries. Second is the
influence of the different immigrant foreigners that sells different products from their country.
From the interaction of the two different student that has a diverse and different culture they
both influence each other where they learn and adopt other culture from another country. After
they return to their home countries they are still been able to keep in touch with each other
because of social media which helps them to communicate across countries in the world. As
they learn new culture and kitchen cuisine Gio learn the recipe that Latif send to him that made
him able to eat the laksa even if he’s at his home country. After Gio graduated he move to
Singapore joining other Filipino overseas worker. The culture was new to him but the foods
that’s been serve in Singapore was much likely the food from Malaysia that he learn from Latif.

In this story we can identify how does globalization occurs within the things we use,
the feed we eat, the gadgets we use or the technology we use, and with the products we buy
and we sold. In the story it represents how globalization works all over the world in many
different ways. Like for the adaptation of Gio of the Malaysian food the “Laksa” and the spread
of the telenovela of “Pangako sa’yo” across Asian countries and the use of communication
through social media which is the use of technology and a product of globalization.

Because of Globalization there are many countries who have been able to rise and
improve their economy which benefits them to become a develop country. Globalization also
helps other countries in terms of cultural aspect wherein they are able to represent their culture
and traditions through their goods, services, practices, products or foods or kitchen cuisine this
helps them represent their culture with the other country like in the story where Latif gave his
mother’s recipe of the food Laksa to Gio. Globalization means the speedup of movements and
exchanges of human beings, goods, and services, capital, technologies or cultural practices all
over the planet. One of the effects of globalization is that it promotes and increases interactions
between different regions and populations around the world.
Globalization also has pros and cons because not all countries are able to compete with other
develop countries because they are lack of funds and the production rate of products that is
being imported and exported is low for the undeveloped countries like us here in the Philippines
we cannot compete with the develop countries like Japan, America and other foreign countries
because globalization favors the develop countries that makes them more richer than the
countries who are still climbing to develop and improve. Globalization has benefits that cover
many different areas. It reciprocally developed economies all over the world and increased
cultural exchanges. It also allowed financial exchanges between companies, changing the
paradigm of work. Many people are nowadays citizens of the world. The origin of goods
became secondary and geographic distance is no longer a barrier for many services to happen.
Despite globalization its benefits, the economic growth driven by globalization has not been
done without the criticism. The consequences of globalization are far from homogeneous:
income inequalities, disproportional wealth and trades that benefit parties differently. In the
end, one of the criticisms is that some actors (countries, companies, individuals) benefit more
from the phenomena of globalization, while others are sometimes perceived as the “losers” of
globalization according to Oxfam (2019)

Many critics also said out that globalization has negative effects on the environment.
The massive development of transport that has been the basis of globalization is also
responsible for serious environmental problems such as greenhouse gas emissions, global
warming or air pollution. At the same time, global economic growth and industrial productivity
are both the driving force and the major consequences of globalization. They also have big
environmental consequences as they contribute to the depletion of natural resources,
deforestation and the destruction of ecosystems and loss of biodiversity. The worldwide
distribution of goods is also creating a big garbage problem, especially on what concerns plastic
pollution. This only means that Globalization has its good and bad effects depending on how
it will be manage to be use.

Globalization on its own has a lot of gains and benefits, but because to the influence of some
other factors and especially the nature and structure of most developing countries, it impacts
and affect negatively despite its advantages. These impacts hold serious effect for developing
countries in the face of needed economic growth and development for these countries. To this
end, the leadership of the various nations in the developed world must understand that their
major responsibilities lie in the needs of their immediate societies. It is therefore imperative
that these countries formulate rational policies and reforms that would guide liberalization of
trade and the complexities of globalization as a whole to conform to their own domestic
economic agenda. Globalization itself should not be hindered for the progress of other country
or nation. But the extent and pace of its progress should be made to reflect the nation’s situation
and presenting economic dispensation so that in the long run, the developing country itself
would be able to strongly compete in the wider confluence of globalization. There are many
fields of globalization and some of the examples are the economic globalization, cultural
globalization, financial globalization, political globalization, sociological globalization,
technological globalization, geographic globalization and lastly the ecological globalization
There are many influential people all over the world has a say for the word globalization, first
is for the well-known owner and the former CEO of Microsoft who is Bill Gates, he said that
“Globalization is not only something that will concern and threaten us in the future, but
something that is taking place in the present and to which we must first open our eyes.” As for
his quotation he means that this globalization may cause a lot of negative effects in spite of its
advantages.
For the former U.S president Barack Obama he said that “No generation has had the
opportunity, as we now have, to build a global economy that leaves no-one behind. It is a
wonderful opportunity, but also a profound responsibility.” For his quotation he means that as
we build our economy or as we develop and improve our global economy no country shall be
left behind but as we notice what’s happening now is that globalization favors the develop
countries and not the poor countries. Globalization has a pros and cons in our global economy
because the rich gets richer and the poor becomes poorer that makes it unfair for other countries
around the globe.
For the famous German sociologist Ulrich Beck he said “I find that because of modern
technological evolution and our global economy, and as a result of the great increase in
population, our world has greatly changed: it has become much smaller. However, our
perceptions have not evolved at the same pace; we continue to cling to old national
demarcations and the old feelings of ‘us’ and ‘them’.” For his saying about the globalization
he defines the evolution of our global economy and how great impact it has done around the
world.
“We have to remember we’re in a global economy. The purpose of fiscal stimulus is not simply
to sustain activity in our national economies but to help the global economy as well, and that’s
why it’s so critical that measures in those packages avoid anything that smacks of
protectionism.”
"There are two globalizations... The elite globalization represents minority forces. The elite
globalization is about making money... The people's globalization, the democratic mass
globalization is about life values." - Kevin Danaher, Author, and Anti-globalization Activist
for this quotation he means that there are two types of globalization. First is the elite
globalization where it refers to the developed countries who is about making money and the
second one is the people’s globalization where people learn life values or life lessons and who
is independent and aware of the reality of life.
"To compete in a global economy, our students must continue their education beyond high
school. To make this expectation a reality, we must give students the tools they need to succeed,
including the opportunity to take a college entrance exam." – That’s what Jennifer Granholm
said towards globalization Former Governor of Michigan, Author & TV Personality where she
points out that this present generation students must have a good quality education like what
happen here in the Philippines we are applying the k – 12 curriculum so that the students will
become fully equipped with knowledge and they will be prepared by the time they enter the
college level.
