Microfinance pioneer from Pakistan — who developed an interest-free
microfinance programme — was among Tuesday’s September 1winners of
Asia’s equivalent to the Nobel Prize. Muhammad Amjad Saqib, 64, won the
Ramon Magsaysay Award for his “first-of-its-kind” interest- and collateral-free
microfinance program that catalysed scores of poor households. Nearly two
decades after its launch, Akhuwat — founded by Dr. Saqib — has grown into
the nation’s largest microfinance institution, distributing the equivalent of $900
million and boasting an almost 100 per cent loan repayment rate, the award
foundation said.

Pakistan will remain on the United Kingdom’s travel red list according to the
latest travel review announced on Thursday, August 26, 2021. The decision will
cost many Pakistani families millions of rupees. For Pakistani families being on
the UK’s travel red list means the loss of millions of Rupees. People from the
red list countries have to follow certain protocols such as a mandatory 10-day
stay at designated hotels. It incurs hundreds of pounds per person in hotel costs
and test fees. For large families, the sum runs into millions of rupees.

Pakistan Tehreeki-Insaf (PTI) regional president Barrister Sultan Mahmood


took oath as president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on August 25, 2021,
replacing former diplomat Sardar Masood Khan after the expiry of his
stipulated constitutional five-year term. Mr. Mahmood, who had returned in
July 25 elections from LA-III, Mirpur-3, was elected as the territory`s next
constitutional head by 34 members of the AJK Legislative Assembly, 32 from
the PTI, and two from the allies, on Aug 17. The oath was administered to him
by AJK Chief Justice Raja Saeed Akram.

Former captain-turned commentator Ramiz Raja is set to become the next


chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), after the incumbent chief Ehsan
Mani refused an extension in his term that ended on Wednesday, August 25,
2021. The PCB on Thursday, August 26, 2021, confirmed that Mani refused the
one-year extension offered and has informed the premier of his decision. Ramiz
confirmed that he has accepted the job, told on Thursday (August 26).

With Afghanistan at the crossroads, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi


leaves on a four-nation tour on August 24, 2021, for consultations on an
inclusive interim arrangement in the war-torn country. Besides three Central
Asian states -Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan FM will also be
travelling to Iran.

IMF’s biggest ever allocation of $650 billion free money came into effect from
Monday, August 23, 2021, and also brought in additional funding of around
$2.7 billion for Pakistan. Pakistan on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, received a new
batch of International Monetary Fund (IMF) loans worth 2.7 billion US dollars.
The State Bank of Pakistan, according to the official news agency of Pakistan,
confirmed that it had delivered the amount within the general allocations
approved by the International Monetary Fund to boost global liquidity amid the
coronavirus pandemic around the world.

The government on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, assigned Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed the
charge of the chairperson of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). This is the
Seventh appointment made to the position since the ruling PTI took office. He
replaces Asim Ahmed — who was appointed four months back on April 9,
2021.

The Ministry of Water Resources on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, notified the
appointment of retired Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain as the Water and Power
Development Authority (Wapda) chairman for a second consecutive term of
five years.

Naila is now the first Pakistani woman to summit an 8,000m peak in Pakistan
— Gasherbrum II (8,035m). She did her summit along with Sirbaz Khan, for
whom it was his eighth 8,000m peak, and Ali Raza Sadpara, a local legend who
has now officially climbed 8,000m peaks a whopping 16 times — more than
any Pakistani living or deceased.

Former FO spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri will be assuming


responsibilities as Ambassador to Australia.

Pakistan’s scrabble prodigy Syed Imaad Ali wins the world youth title in
Karachi. The 15-year-old talent defeated his opponent in nine out of 13 games
in Sunday’s August 22, 2021, finals as Pakistan finished first in the tournament.
Syed Emad Ali becoming the only player to win the title twice. Pakistan hosted
the event for the second time in a row as the COVID-19 pandemic brought the
championship online.

The 50th martyrdom anniversary of Pakistan Air Force Pilot Officer Rashid
Minhas, Nishan-e-Haider was observed on 20th August 2021. He was born on
17 February 1951 in Karachi and was commissioned as GD-Pilot in the PAF in
March 1971. Rashid Minhas sacrificed his life for the country during the 1971
war, while trying to thwart an attempt by his senior to fly a jet trainer to India.

The Chainalysis Global Crypto Adoption Index ranked 154 countries by three
main metrics. Vietnam is the most adopted country to crypto achieving an
overall index score of 1. And India(0.37), Pakistan (0.36), Ukraine (0.29), and
Kenya (0.28) followed it. India and Pakistan entered the top 10 list this year.
China and the US both dropped in the rankings, primarily because peer-to-peer
trading volume declined. Last year, China ranked fourth and the US sixth. This
year, the US is eighth and China 13th.

Pakistan was ranked 153rd among the 193 countries surveyed in the 2020 UN
E-Government Development Index (EGDI) report which marks a decline in
ranking in comparison with the report published in 2018 [148th]. Earlier, UN
EGDI solely tracked the e-government development but now includes elements
of digital government development of member states by ranking them across
three distinct indicators including Online Services Index (OSI), Human Capital
Index (HCI), and Telecommunication Infrastructure Index (TII).

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad has replaced Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri as the
spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Geo News reported Friday,
August 20, 2021. He was, prior to this new assignment, serving as the
Ambassador of Pakistan to the Kingdom of Thailand.

The first edition of the league was held from the 6th to 17th of August 2021 at
the Muzaffarabad Cricket Stadium. The league consists of six franchises; five
teams representing the five major cities in Azad Kashmir, while one team is
representing the overseas Kashmiris. The Rawalakot Hawks were the
champions of the first season, defeating the Muzaffarabad Tigers in the final.

The first edition of the Kashmir Premier League (KPL) 2021 has finally ended
with Shahid Afridi led Rawalakot Hawks being crowned champions. The team
defeated the Muzaffarabad Tigers by seven runs to win the final KPL at the
Muzaffarabad Cricket Stadium on the 17th of August 2021.

Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry is a Pakistani politician who hails from Azad


Kashmir, Pakistan. He served as Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir between July
1996 to July 2001 and is currently serving as the President of Azad Kashmir
since 17 August 2021. Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) Barrister Sultan
Mahmood securing 34 votes against opposition candidate Mian Abdul
Waheed’s 16.

Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Pakistani Police, Helena Iqbal Saeed, has
been appointed as the first-ever Pakistani woman to UN Police Commissioner’s
slot in Khartoum, Sudan. It is notable that she also has the honor of becoming
the first AIG from Quetta, Balochistan, for this rank. She is also the first person
to reach flag rank in the history of the Police Service of Pakistan. Helena is also
the highest-rank female officer of the Police Service of Pakistan.
Mountain biker and adventure athlete, Samar Khan, has become the only female
cyclist to reach the base camp of the world’s tallest peak. Khan, who holds the
title of the first Pakistani to summit Mount Kilimanjaro and the Biafo Glaciers
in the Karakoram Range on a bike, has set a unique record by reaching the base
camp of the savage mountain via cycle. In her journey, Khan cycled from
Askole, a small town located in Shigar Valley, to K2 base camp.

Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar on Monday, August 16, 2021, announced
launching an air ambulance service, saying Punjab would be the first province
to start the service.

Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, on Monday, August 9, 2021, has been sworn in
as the new chief justice of the Balochistan High Court. He was administered the
oath by Balochistan Governor Syed Zahoor Ahmad Agha. On the occasion,
Chief Minister (CM) Balochistan Jam Kamal Khan, Provincial Ministers, and
other prominent officers attended the oath-taking ceremony.

At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Arshad Nadeem made history by


becoming the first-ever Pakistani athlete to qualify for a track and field final at
the Olympics. Arshad was a 24-year-old javelin thrower.

Google has commemorated Pakistan’s Independence Day with a doodle artwork


that depicted the medieval Derawar Fort located in Punjab’s Cholistan Desert.

The Pakistani nation is celebrating 75th Independence Day on August 14, 2021,
with traditional zeal and enthusiasm with special activities to highlight the
struggle of our forefathers and national heroes for acquiring a separate
homeland.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed has convened a meeting of
the Judicial Commission to appoint Lahore High Court Justice Ayesha A Malik
as the first woman Judge of the Supreme Court in 74 years. Justice Ayesha A.
Malik will be replacing Justice Mushir Alam, who is retiring on August 17.

The fourth death anniversary of Dr. Ruth Katherina Martha Pfau, who devoted
more than 55 years of her life to fighting leprosy in Pakistan, is being observed
on August 10, 2021. She moved from Germany to Pakistan in 1961. Dr. Ruth
Pfau, who is commonly known as ‘Mother Teresa’ of Pakistan for her extensive
battle against leprosy, passed away at the age of 87, on August 10, 2017.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, announced
the appointment of Yong ye as the new country director for Pakistan.

Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Ali Amin Gandapur
has said that Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry has been nominated for the
president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Ali Amin Gandapur said that the
new president for AJK will be elected on August 17 while the oath-taking
ceremony will be held on August 24.

Pakistan on Thursday, August 12, 2021, beat India’s record of planting most
trees within a minute as over 50,000 saplings were planted during a plantation
drive in Gujranwala. The drive was led by Special Assistant to Prime Minister
(SAPM) on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam, who said on the occasion that
52,040 plants had been planted in the presence of representatives of the
Guinness World Records, which bettered an Indian record of planting 37,000
trees. Previously, Bhutan, in 2015, had set the world record of planting 49,672
saplings.

Punjab Minister for Prisons Fayyaz Al Hassan Chauhan has been appointed as
the new spokesperson of the Punjab government. Reports stated that Chauhan’s
appointment as the spokesperson has been approved by Chief Minister Usman
Buzdar. Chauhan is currently serving as Minister of Prisons for Punjab since
August 2018. He has previously served as the provincial minister for
information.

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, August 9, 2021announced the


election for AJK’s president is scheduled to take place on August 17 — from 10
am to 2 pm. The new president for AJK will be elected on August 17 while the
oath-taking ceremony will be held on August 24.

Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, previously serving as the chief justice of


the Balochistan High Court, was administered the oath on Monday, August 09,
2021, as a judge of the Supreme Court. The oath was administered by Chief
Justice Gulzar Ahmed at a “simple and dignified ceremony” held at the SC in
Islamabad.

Pakistan competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally


scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games were
postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It
was Pakistan’s eighteenth appearance at the Summer Olympics. This Olympics
was Pakistan’s best performance since 1992, with both Talha Talib & Arshad
Nadeem reaching the finals of their events and barely missing out on a medal.
Pakistan Navy war game Shamsheer-i-Bahr VIII commenced here on August 9,
2021. Described as the flagship drill of the navy, Shamsheer-i-Bahr VIII is held
biennially to corroborate various concepts which are validated in subsequent
maritime exercises prior to being incorporated in naval strategy.

Prime Minister Imran Khan will inaugurate the world`s biggest Miyawaki urban
forest in Lahore on August 9, 2021, under the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami project.
The forest has been developed on over 100 canals having a total of 165,000
plants that will grow 10 times quicker than in a normal forest owing to the
unique Miyawaki technique.

A 12-member delegation of the Organisation of Islamic Conference`s (OIC)


Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) visited the Line
of Control (LoC) on August 7, 2021, for a firsthand account of the situation
along the heavily militarised dividing line in the disputed Himalayan region of
Kashmir.

Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari as well as several members of the


British House of Commons on Thursday, August 5, 2021, slammed the UK
government for keeping Pakistan on its red list of countries at the latest
coronavirus travel update while removing India from it.

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Punjab on Information and


Broadcasting Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan has tendered her resignation from the
post. According to Geo News, Dr. Awan directly sent her resignation letter to
CM Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar, who has duly accepted the resignation. Dr.
Firdous Ashiq Awan resigned from their post on Friday, August 6, 2021.

Arshad Nadeem has become Pakistan’s new hero after he qualified into the final
round of men’s javelin at the Tokyo Olympics 2021 after a superb 85.16-meter
throw. The 24-year-old, who was born in Khanewal, is the son of a mason. He
is the country’s first track-and-field athlete to qualify directly for the Olympics
and the first Pakistani to qualify for the final of any track-and-field event at the
Games.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on August 5, 2021, de-notified Akbar


Ayub Khan as the minister for local government and rural development
following his resignation. A notification issued by the administration
department read, `the governor KP in the exercise of powers conferred under
Clause 3 of Article 132 of the Constitution read with Clause 1 of Article 105
thereof is pleased to de-notify Mr. Akbar Ayub Khan, minister for LG&RD and
human rights and parliamentary affairs portfolios. On de-notification from his
respective office, he has ceased to hold the portfolio of the provincial minister
with an immediate effect.

Sardar Abdul Qayyum Khan Niazi is Kashmiri politician from Azad Jammu and
Kashmir who is currently serving as 13th prime minister of Azad Kashmir from
August 4, 2021. Niazi won the recent legislative assembly election from
Abbaspur-Poonch area which was held on 25 July 2021. He received 33 votes in
the newly formed Legislative Assembly of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, whereas
joint opposition’s candidate Chaudhry Latif Akbar garnered 15 votes.

Riaz Ahmed of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) were elected deputy speaker
of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly, respectively, on
August 3, 2021. He defeated Nisara Abbasi of the Pakistan Muslim League-
Nawaz (PML-N) by securing 32 votes as against 15 of their opponents.

Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) were elected


speaker of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly,
respectively, on August 3, 2021. They defeated Raja Faisal Mumtaz Rathore of
the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) by securing 32 votes as against 15 of their
opponents.

Abdul Qayyum Khan Niaz (PTI) is the current Leader of the House of Azad
Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly Since July 04, 2021.

Ch Latif Akbar is the current Leader of the Opposition of Azad Jammu and
Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly since 04.08.2021.

Lieutenant General (retired) Asim Saleem Bajwa on Tuesday, August 3, 2021,


resigned from his position as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)
Authority’s chief, as he thanked the government and Prime Minister Imran
Khan for their support. Bajwa said he wished the best for Khalid Mansoor, who
has replaced him as the special assistant to the prime minister on CPEC Affairs.

In a significant development, Prime Minister Imran Khan on August 3, 2021


appointed Khalid Mansoor as his special assistant on China-Pakistan Economic
Corridor (CPEC) affairs after which CPEC Authority Chairman retired Lt Gen
Asim Saleem Bajwa quit his position.
