Grade & Strand: 12 ABM Activity No.: 1

YOUR INITIAL TASK

Media Use Log

What could be that essential knowledge that should allow users to engage with media and
information channels in a meaningful manner? Think of the past week, and record your use and
interaction with media and information providers (such as internet, social media, TV, radio,
newspaper, etc.). Indicate how many hours you spent engaged with each one. Be reminded that these
do not have to be exact, and you can estimate the number of hours you spend each week.

Media or Information Provider Number of hours in a week

Watching Videos online (YouTube) 56 Hours

Scrolling social media apps (Facebook) 96 Hours

Watching Soap Operas and news 48 Hours

(Television)

Chatting or Communicating (Messenger) 105 Hours

Scrolling websites for citing and more 45-50 Hours

1. Which media provider did you spend the most time?

It’s the Facebook and Twitter for me. Sometimes I feel enjoyment because of the posts,
tweets, stories and fleets that Twitter and Facebook recommend but on the other hand Facebook
and tweeter gives me everyday news and information about politics, social life, and other
business. It helps me to learn lessons about school and lesson about life. I also do spend
chatting and communicating to my relatives and friends to make a bond with them.

2. What roles does media play in your life? (leisure, learning, communication, etc.)

Many different media platforms can be our safe place, our place to relax and remove
stress for example, YouTube. Here we can watch relaxing and calming videos, like cover songs,
vlogs, mukbangs and many more. In learning, we also have YouTube for this, for example our
teacher’s way of explaining the lessons are by giving us video links from YouTube, which also
helps very much in understanding the lesson. And for communication we have the messenger
and Facebook. For those whose parents are overseas can use applications to catch up with their
family and bond.

TASK 1 PROCESSING QUESTIONS

Answer the following questions below:

1. In your opinion, what makes an individual literate in media and information?

One becomes literate in media and information if they know how to provide
the right information, they are open to share the information to everyone, they
provide answers to questions, and they contribute in the enhancement of
knowledge of others. Media and information have become an essential part of our
daily lives, and that’s why it is important to develop  media and information
literacy. In order to become media and information literate, one should take time to
accessing media and information and using it, learn how to evaluate the
information presented creating your own media and information knowing how it
works and improve its quality.
Knowing that Media and Information Literacy educates digital people in
accessing, organizing, analyzing, creating and making judgments on media what
makes a person Media and Information literate is the abilities and skills he or she
possesses, which are accessing, organizing, analyzing, creating and making
judgments. All these skills and abilities are shown and or exemplified when a
particular or certain person is able to successfully access a particular media
independently. And then is able to critically analyze the information piece by

2. What activities/habits do you practice which illustrate media and information literacy? Give at
least three examples.

As a student who is facing the pandemic right know, I can say that
studying in this situation is very unlucky and I find it hard since we are
practicing online study or online learning. But with the help of media and
information literacy it gives us easy way to gather information and learning
about our studies. For example, if I didn’t satisfy with the learning modules,
books or even the explanation of the teacher, I will do some citing, looking
more information or researching in different applications that contains more
objectives and more options in learning. Next is communicating or
messaging my friends, classmates, families and for school activities. I used
some messaging apps to connect with them. And lastly to share my personal
life in social media, I do some blogs or posting some pictures and activities
that I do.
