Lesson 2: Making a Podcast

INTRODUCTION:
Podcasts come in all shapes and sizes. It means that we have lots of room to be creative and
make something we are excited about. Some podcasts are long — sometimes an hour or more.
Other podcasts are less than 10 minutes. Some podcasts are about news or it tell stories. Lots are
funny, conversational, and/or educational. Podcasts teach listeners about a specific topic.

PRESENTATION OF THE TOPIC

What is the purpose of my podcast?

• Why am I doing this?

• If you are doing a podcast to promote your business, then there is your answer. You may just
be doing it for fun. In that case, your purpose may be to bring entertainment to your audience.

• Discovering your podcast’s purpose will later help you decide what type of topics you should
cover or who you should interview.

Who is my target audience?

• Once you’ve figured out your purpose, that should lead you to who your target audience.

• If the purpose is to further your business, your audience would be the people who will buy your
products.

• If the purpose is to bring entertainment, your audience might be movie or book lovers.

What kind of content will my audience enjoy?

• Coming up with ideas on what to discuss can be difficult and is arguably the hardest part about
starting a podcast.

• However, if you’ve answered the first two questions, answering this one should be less difficult.

• For example, if your purpose is to promote your tech business and your target audience is tech
lovers, you may want to include reviews on the latest gadgetry your company is releasing.

• If your purpose is to entertain and your target audience is superhero movie lovers, a great
podcast idea is discussing the similarities and differences between Marvel and DC
superheroes.

Podcast Ideas

1. Spotlight a subject

- Focus on a specific book, movie, artist, actor, destination, etc. and discuss it in depth.
- This may seem like a review or recap, but the difference is that a spotlight is more of a
factual discussion while reviews and recaps are based on your personal thoughts and
opinions.

2. Give recommendations

- This is a good place to start if you have traveled often or simply enjoy trying new things and
places.
- People are always looking for new locations to visit and new restaurants to try. However,
don’t just give a simple recommendation.
- Talk about why and give your listeners compelling reasons to try it out for themselves.

3. Tell a story

- Crazy and interesting things can happen anywhere. Maybe you recently had a long stay at
the hospital and have some crazy stories you think should be shared.
- Maybe you were at home and your kid did something completely ridiculous. Almost
anything can be a good story with a proper and enthusiastic re-telling.

4. Promote your business

- One way to use your podcast is to get your own business known to the public.
- If you own a tech company, talk about your products. If you own an antique store, talk
about the items you have for sale.

5. Give advice

- The best way to enter the podcasting world is to target a specific group of people.
- If you are a parent, your target audience might be other parents. You can narrow this down
even further to parents of toddlers or teenagers.
