Research Topic/Proposal: Water Level Indicator Using Transistors

Problem:
 Water wastage and scarcity
The total volume of water available on earth is about 332.5 million cubic miles
with the vast majority of it found in the oceans [1]. However, more than one billion
individuals have limited access to potable water and four years by from today,
approximately two-thirds of the population may experience water scarcity [2]. This is an
alarming issue which is due to inefficient and inadequate water management. One way
to prevent water from going to waste is by ensuring that water tanks or containers do not
overflow in homes, factories, commercial complexes and other liquid storage systems.
Manual checking of water containers can be tiresome and forgetting to switch them off
may happen frequently. A water level indicator can provide the information regarding the
current volume of water inside a tank, which is a simple system to gauge and manage
water to reduce water wastage and energy.
Specific Objectives:
 To design a simple electrical circuit which indicates the level of water in a container to
address overflow problems, and in turn avoid water and energy wastage
 To use electrical components which are easily found, market-available and/or accessible
in simulation tools
 To promote better water management in order to preserve water
Methodology:
Multisim will be used as the simulation tool for the schematic diagram while
TinkerCAD will be utilized for the pictorial diagram. Due to the unavailability of a DC
buzzer in TinkerCAD, a LED light will also be used for the last level of the water indicator
instead of a buzzer.
