Blanchard Valley Hospital Named One of the Nation’s 100 Top Hospitals
Blanchard Valley Hospital has been named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by
Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and
quality of healthcare.
The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals(r) study evaluates performance in 10 areas:
mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; operating
income; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; post-discharge mortal-
ity; and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, and
pneumonia. The study has been conducted annually since 1993. This is the second time
Blanchard Valley Hospital has been recognized with this honor.
“Blanchard Valley Hospital is proud to be named one of the highest performing hospi-
tals in the nation. This is a credit to our associates, physicians, and volunteers. It’s national
recognition for a job well done, every day,” said Christopher Press, president of Blanchard
Valley Hospital. “Our goal is to offer exceptional care. These awards are one measure of
how well we’re doing.”
To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, Thomson Reuters researchers evaluated 2,914
short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals. They used public information - Medicare cost
reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, and core measures and
patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hos-
pital Compare Web site. Hospitals do not apply, and winners do not pay to market this
honor.
The winning hospitals were announced in the March 28 edition of Modern Healthcare
magazine.
If all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the award-
winning facilities:
• Nearly 116,000 additional patients would survive each year.
* More than 197,000 patient complications would be avoided annually.
* The average patient stay would decrease by half a day.

Deep roots and bright future continue at messenger Press

CARTHAGENA, OH -- The smell of
ink and the sound of printing presses have
been a presence in Carthagena since 1882
when the Society of the Precious Blood
began producing religious materials for
Catholics around the world.
Times have changed. What was once
St. Charles Seminary now houses the St.
Charles Living Community, and fields
formerly tended by priests and brothers
are now leased to area farmers. But the
sound of printing presses continues.

age.

Staff should be trained to avoid hazards.
Injuries also can be avoided through
thorough and regularly updated training of
all employees, so they are aware of hazards
and can identify them before they cause any
harm.
Many employees may have a designated
health and safety adviser, whose responsibil-
ity it is to ensure that the workplace is safe
and free from occupational hazards, as well
as carrying out necessary health and safety
training to all staff.

The Ohio State University at Lima is cel-
ebrating its 50th year as west central Ohio’s
Ohio State University. More than 40,000
alumni and a record-breaking 1,530 current
students are marking the institution’s half
century along with the communities Ohio
State Lima serves.
When business, community and govern-
ment leaders decided that the students of
the region needed an institution of higher
education, they went after the very best in
the state. In 1960, Ohio State offered its
first classes in Lima at Lima Senior High
School. Building on the founding principles
of access to world class education and high
academic standards, Ohio State Lima has
worked to meet the educational needs of
the area.
Today, students study on a beautiful,
wooded campus set on a 565-acre learn-
ing laboratory. Near campus housing has
opened the doors to students who want a
traditional away-from-home campus ex-
perience and for those who live outside the
traditional 10-county service area. The ex-
panded student services, challenging course
work and dedicated faculty and staff are at-
tracting an increasing number of students to
the Lima area.
“It is our belief that everyone who
comes to Ohio State Lima can be successful
and we will do everything we can to make
that happen,” said Dr. John R. Snyder, dean
and director of Ohio State Lima.
In an effort to foster student success,
Ohio State Lima is focusing more and more
on helping students make the transition to
the demands of University living and learn-
ing.
“We know that a student’s success in
college depends on many things – academ-
ic, social and financial wellness,” said Beth
Keehn, Director of Enrollment Services at
Ohio State Lima. “Study after study con-
firms that students who are successful in
these three areas during their first year are
most likely to graduate.”
To further student success, Ohio State
Lima has expanded its First Year Experi-
ence (FYE) program to include a variety of
programs, including Campin’ on the Quad,
a leadership retreat for incoming freshmen;
a Family and Parent Newsletter; Home-
coming and Spring Game trips to Colum-

sides to operating a business: Risk. This is

you protect your car and home with insur-

assets in the event of a natural disaster, legal

Review Your Coverage Needs
The specific coverage and amount that

office space, check with the landlord or leas-

your personal belongings and business prop-

your personal auto coverage is sufficient. Af-
ter all, if you get in an accident, you’ll need a
replacement car to continue running the busi-
ness. If you have company cars, then they’ll
need to be insured, too.
