1. Define the terms machine, lever, effort, fulcrum and load.
Machine - complicated devices, that we see and use everyday Lever - are very simple machines used to increase forces Effort - a force exerted by a machine or in a process. Fulcrum - the point against which a lever is placed to get a purchase, or on which it turns or is supported Load - a weight or source of pressure borne by someone or something. 2. Machines make work easier. State 2 ways in which machines make work easier. by multiplying the force of speed of the energy applied, by expanding the distance across which force is applied. 3. Draw the following objects and label the effort, load and fulcrum on each: Hammer
bottle openr,
crowbar, Scissors,
Nutcracker, wheelbarrow,
fishing rod,
tweezers,
pulleys ,
wheels,
seesaW
4. Describe the three (3) structures that levers have in common.
Fulcrum - the point at which the lever rotates. Input force is called the effort- the force applied to the lever. Output force is called the load- the force applied by the lever to move the load 5. Differentiate between the three classes of levers. Class 1 has the fulcrum placed between the effort and load. Class 2 has the load between the effort and the fulcrum. Class 3 has the effort between the load and the fulcrum. 6. State three examples of levers in humans, insert diagrams. The elbow (fulcrum) the biceps brachi (effort) work together to move loads held with the hand with the forearm acting as the beam
