HOURS: Part Time (28 hours per week)

SALARY: NJC scale 15-20 including London Weighting [£27,225 - £29,705]

REPORTS TO: Head of Sexual Violence and Young People’s Services

BASED AT: Resource for London, 356 Holloway Road, N7 6PA

About Galop

Galop is the UK’s LGBT+ anti-violence and abuse charity working with lesbians, gay men, bi, queer,
trans, non-binary and intersex people who have experienced sexual violence, domestic abuse and
hate crime.

Galop has been championing the needs of LGBT+ victims/survivors and communities for over 35
years. Our aim is to prevent and respond to violence and abuse experienced by LGBT+ people by:

 Providing support, advice and advocacy to LGBT+ people impacted by violence and abuse
 Improving the response of services, commissioners and government to LGBT+ victims/survivors
through training, research, publication and strategic campaigning
 Working in partnership to increase the safety and well-being of LGBT+ people.

Galop’s Young People’s Service works with LGBT+ young people aged 13-25, offering advocacy and
support to those who have experienced violence or abuse. The service engages with young people
on issues of consent, relationships and community; and promotes awareness and best practice
amongst professionals. The service is unique in its focus on work with LGBT+ children and young
people experiencing abuse, many of whom face complex and high risk situations. The Service has a
small team of skilled and dedicated advocates working within this demanding field.

Summary of Post

Galop is looking for an experienced LGBT+ practitioner to provide an effective and professional
service to LGBT+ young people facing violence and abuse. The person will have proven experience
of successfully advocating on behalf of young people and/or LGBT+ people experiencing abuse and
skills to engage with other professionals to improve their understanding of the needs of LGBT+
young people. We need someone who will bring professionalism, reflection and resilience to the
role. Advocacy work will include risk assessment, safeguarding and interactions with other
professionals, for example MARAC, the police and social services.

Key tasks of the post are to:


 undertake risk and needs assessments with LGBT+ young people and develop advocacy, safety
and support plans as required
 interact with relevant professionals and agencies to bring about change in a young person’s life
or enable them to get the support they need
 maintain a client caseload and undertake case management and administrative tasks to a high
standard
 work within a robust safeguarding framework and to high standards of professional conduct
 provide emotional support and work with young people to build well-being, resilience, self-
esteem and empowerment
 find ways to reach and engage with LGBT+ young people with lived experience of violence and
abuse
 ensure that all engagement is inclusive of the diversity of LGBT+ young people and promotes
awareness of intersectional identities and experiences
 contribute to the development of the Young People’s Service and team, supporting good
practice with young people across the organisation.

There is an essential requirement under the Sexual Orientation Regulations 2003 that the post
holder has experience of LGBT+ needs and the impact of discrimination.

Job Description

1. Provide advocacy, advice and support to LGBT+ young people experiencing or at risk of
violence and abuse
 undertake risk and needs assessments with LGBT+ young people and develop advocacy,
safety and support plans as required
 maintain a client caseload and actively engage with case management to monitor case
progress, taking a robust and timely approach to safeguarding
 ensure information, case records, monitoring and evaluation data is recorded in a
professional, timely and confidential manner in line with Galop procedures
 provide emotional support to young clients, building well-being, resilience, self-esteem and
empowerment
 be an effective communicator with young people and ensure all engagement is inclusive of
the diversity of LGBT+ young people and promotes awareness of intersectional identities
and experiences.

2. Work effectively with external agencies to bring about change in a young person’s life
 be an effective and professional communicator with other agencies, working with relevant
procedures and laws to enable young people to get the support they need
 build working relationships with other professionals and agencies to improve referral
pathways and promote shared learning.

3. Participate in the development of Galop’s young people’s work internally and externally
 work collaboratively within the Young People’s team to develop the messages needed by
LGBT+ young people facing violence and abuse
 work collaboratively across Galop to assist other teams in the development of best practice
with and for LGBT+ young people
 carry out other duties as appropriate to the post as required by the Head of Service.

4. Professional Conduct
 work consistently and effectively within the ethos and style of the Young People’s Service,
including maintaining a trauma-informed working environment with colleagues and clients
 work to a high standard of professional conduct and safe service delivery with young
people, responding robustly to risk assessment and safeguarding issues
 work in a professional manner within Galop and in all external working relationships
 demonstrate self-awareness, self-care and boundaried working at all times
 engage with relevant training and professional development activities, as required by the
Head of Service
 attend internal and external supervision, team and staff meetings as agreed
 adhere to all Galop policies and procedures, ensuring an anti-discriminatory and inclusive
approach to all aspects of this role.
