OBSERVATION PROTOCOL 4

PRAXIS IV

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgbGvsa_Bpw

A. Pay close attention to the class featured in the video and answer the following:

1. Does the teacher provide controlled or free input? Provide examples.

Controlled. At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher gives instructions in English and make
his students get involved in the language by giving them all those instructions in English,
when he gives directions in the class, he speaks about a certain topic. Students are required
to use controlled input because in the development of the role play activity the teacher
presents all the instructions and materials for the students to act in a controlled manner.

2. Are students required to produce controlled or free output?

Students are required to produce controlled input because the topic is determined and the
directions that the teacher give to them, are related to some vocabulary about a pre–selected
topic. The output or result is supposed to be produced in a controlled way since the teacher is
the one who guides the student to start generating their knowledge based on what was
learned before, but in this case the students are not yet prepared to generate that output
since the knowledge they have is minimal and they need to reinforce that aspect with the
teacher’s help.

3. Which methods or approaches are evident in the techniques used?

CLT, through some activities, he speaks to his students to make them say a series of words to
understand them related to the topic that the teacher said at the beginning of the class.

4. In your opinion, what was the most effective activity in terms of learning outcomes and
which one, if any, the least effective? Why?

The most effective activity was the card’s activity because the teacher makes his students to
speak about the topic of the lesson, they put on practice what they learned on the class by
telling to other classmates a short sentence. We think it was a good activity that they had to
organize the dialogue and then dramatize it since it somehow forces them to remember and
put into practice what they saw in class, but it also helps them to communicate and relate to
their peers and share their knowledge.

5. In your opinion, were the materials used conducive to learning?

We think that some of the materials used were very helpful to understand some words, the
use of some objects and the cards were very helpful to his students because they related the
words with the objects to understand its meaning and also, it was very helpful in terms of
group working.

6. What elements of the lesson would you improve?

One thing to consider is that the teacher needs to have a better fluency, also some of the
activities need to be more dynamic and efficient in terms of using the language, not only
focusing on doing something that is not related to the topic like the card’s activity because it
is time consuming.
