SL-ES-328B Version 01, updates the previous Service Letter, SL-ES-328B Version 00. The list of affected
shovels has been revised and includes 4100XPB, 4100XPC and 4100XPC AC machines.
This mandatory upgrade has safety implications; it is strongly advised that it be performed as soon
as possible.
Each current production P&H shovel is typically supplied with two lifting holes located in the boom point area.
These holes are intended to be the principal rigging points for lifting the boom end. The boom lifting holes
supplied on some 4100XPB, 4100XPC, 4100XPC AC shovels are not in the correct location.
A mandatory inspection is required to be performed to determine the location of the lifting holes (Refer to
Service Bulletin SB-ES-142B). Lifting holes found to be in the wrong location must have Warning Tag
(R71812) attached to the boom. A temporary reinforcement kit and a permanent repair kit have been
designed for booms with the lifting holes in the incorrect locations. Contact Milwaukee Product Support if
the boom lifting holes are found to be incorrectly located.
Boom Lifting
Hole must be at
least 2.3 inches
from the nearest
edge of the plate
Table 1 provides a list of machines requiring the mandatory inspection of the lifting holes.
Present a copy of Service Bulletin SB-ES-142B to the affected customers listed in Table 1 and coordinate a
time to perform the mandatory inspection of the location of the lifting holes on the boom.
Inspect each boom identified in Table 1 to determine the location of the two lifting holes. The edge of the
hole should be no less than 2.3 inches (58 mm) from the edge of the plate (See Figure 2). Report the
inspection on a CCR and refer to this Service Letter. Include the shovel’s serial number and the
measurements taken to determine the location of the holes.
If a lifting hole is found to be located less than 2.3 inches (58 mm) from the edge, attach the new Warning
Tag (Part Number R71812). Refer to Figures 3 and 4 below. Installation instructions are included on the
drawing. Inform the customer that the holes must not be used to lift the boom.
