ME 413 – MACHINE DESIGN 1

Activity One
Simple Stresses

CO1. Determine the design factor and design stresses, and be able to apply these in the design of
machine elements.

ILO1. Analyze and determine the simple stresses such as tensile, compressive, shear or torsion,
bending or flexural stress, and load acting on the body.

stresses.

Task #1 Problem Solving

1. Two cylinders rolling in the opposite direction has a speed ratio of 3. If the diameter of
driver is 10 inches, find the center distance between the cylinders.
2. Two cylinders rolling in the same direction has speed ratio of 2.5 and center distance of
50cm. Find the diameter of the larger cylinder.
3. Four cylinders rolling in opposite directions has a speed ratio of A:B:C:D = 5:3:1:4. If center
distance between cylinder A and C is 70 inches, find the diameter of cylinder D.
4. A pulley has a tangential velocity of 75 fpm. If pulley dimeter is 10 inches, find the angular
speed in rpm.
5. A steel tie rod on bridge must be withstand a pull of 6200 lbs. Find the diameter of the rod
assuming a factor of safety of 4 and ultimate stress of 66,000 psi.
6. If the ultimate shear strength of steel plate is 45,000 psi, what force is necessary to punch
a 0.9 inches diameter hole in a 0.5 in thick plate using a factor of safety of 3.5.
7. A cable steel has a length of 100m and stretch to 5cm when the load is applied at both ends.
If tensile stress is 50 psi, find the modulus of elasticity of the steel.
8. How many ½ inch diameter hole that can be punch in one motion of a 1/8 inch thick plate
using a force of 50 tons. The ultimate shear stress is 52 ksi and factor of safety of 3.
9. A column supports a compressive load of 250kN. Determine the outside diameter of column
if inside diameter is 185 mm and compressive stress of 50MPa.
10. A steel hollow tube is used to carry a tensile load of 500kN at a stress of 140 MPa. If
outside diameter is 10 times the tube thickness.
11. Two 30mm thick plate is fastened by two bolts, 25mm in diameter. If the plate is subjected
to 50kN tension, find the bearing stress in bolts.
12. What force is necessary to punch a 30mm hole in 12.5 mm thick plate if ultimate shear
stress is 410MPa?
13. A 6mm steel wire is 5m long and stretches 8mm under a given load. If modulus of elasticity
is 200GPa, find the load applied.
14. A steel wire 10m long, hanging vertically supports a tensile load of 2kN. Neglecting the
weight of wire, determine the required diameter if the stress is not to exceed 140MPa and
the total elongation is not to exceed 5mm. Assume E = 200GPa
15. An iron rod 4m long and 0.5 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐2 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 cross section stretches 1mm when a mass of 225kg
is hang on it. Compute the modulus of elasticity of iron.
16. A 20 m rod is stretched to a strain of 0.001. Determine the deflection of the rod.
17. A steel rod 30mm & 800 mm long has an allowance elongation not to exceed 1.5 mm, find
the allowable load in kN.
18. What pressure is required for punching a hole 2 inches in diameter thru a ¼ in steel plate?
19. For a given material, the modulus of elasticity is 100 GN/𝑚𝑚2 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 𝑠𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒. Find the
Poisson’s ratio.
20. A steel tie rod on bridge must be made to withstand a pull of 5000 lbs. Find the diameter
of the rod assuming a factor of safety of 5 and the ultimate stress of 64,000 psi.
