Q.1 a. What is the role of transport layer? Why do we need both TCP and UDP protocols at transport 6
layer? What if we use TCP for DNS protocol?
b. What is congestion? State with example the conditions where TCP Reno needs improvement? 6
Q.3 a. A sender needs to send the four data items Ox3456, OxABCC, Ox02BC, and OxEEEE. 6
b. Compare and contrast the Go-Back-N ARQ Protocol with Selective-Repeat ARQ in terms of 6
system performance. A sender sends a series of packets to the same destination using 4-bit
sequence numbers. If the sequence number starts with 0, what is the sequence number after
sending 99 packets?
Q.4 Why is fragmentation required in computer network? State the protentional places for collection 8
and integration of fragments. Also state pros and cons of every place of integration over system
performance? What part of an IPv4 packet is covered in the checksum calculation? Why? What
if we consider entire contents of the packet for checksum calculation at this place as well?
Q.5 Create a system of three LANs with four routers. The routers (B 1 to B4) connect 16
the LANs as follows
a. B1 connects LAN 1 and LAN 2.
b. B2 connects LAN 1 and LAN 3.
c. B3 connects LAN 2 and LAN 3.
d. B4 connects LAN 1, LAN 2, and LAN 3.

Use IP address 192.168.1.0 for LAN 1, 192.168.2.0 for LAN 2 and 192.168.3.0 for LAN 3.
Assume appropriate IP addresses for rest of the networks if any exists in the system.
a. Make the system loop free if there exists any loop by choosing B1 as the root bridge. Show
the forwarding and blocking ports, after applying the spanning tree procedure.
b. Populate the routing tables of Routers B1 and B4.
c. Does routers have more overhead than bridges? Justify your answer.
d. List the steps followed to forward packet from a Machine 198.168.3.10 to Machine
198.168.2.10 (Assume appropriate MAC addresses if required).
